Manhattan Beach: yay or nay?
Manhattan Beach is a very nice place to live but it's very white, expensive and quite homogenous in comparison with other parts of LA. If you can afford to live there, it's a very comfortable place to live. Close to LAX, sort of close to Santa Monica, kinda far from Downtown. Great air (little, to no smog as you're on the water.)

Advice on preparing for an internship in Japan
I am Japanese. I live in Japan. I work in the software/Internet industry. We take interns (just 2 per year, and only from a fixed set of Japanese universities.)
I will be frank with you- internships are rare in Japan at traditional Japanese companies. There's a few reasons for this but that's not essential here.
Certainly try many of the routes mentioned above, but imo, what your son needs is a personal introduction. That's key to something... [more]

Please suggest some great house music mixes.
I like b00mb0x and Blentwell but you do have to look around for what you want. DJ Mitzura has a new mix on b00mb0x that looks like it might do you good:
Dj Mitzura - This One’s Gonna Getcha
01. Daft Punk ~ Da Funk / Daftendirekt
02. Acid Jacks ~ Disco Shoes (Electrixx Mix)
03. Fdel ~ Get Up On Ya Feet
04. Le Pimp ~ Le Rock non Stop (Freddy Fresh Remix)
05. Groove Armada ~ Superstylin’

The wikipedia page for French House is pretty good actually. If you like that filter-style of house that is often associated with French producers, I'd recommend Alan Braxe, Kris Menace, and Martin Solveig.

Help a guy tweak his summer wardrobe.
Summer = linen for me. Trek down to your local store and check out some long and short-sleeved linen shirts. I recommend that you wear them with colored undershirts as they are often see-through. A tan linen blazer would also be a nice thing to have in a summer wardrobe.

What's the best external HD?
There's no such thing as a hard drive that won't fail. All of them will fail- it's just a matter of when.
There's a million and one things to consider but basically you want to have more than 1 backup of anything at any one time. Also, worst-case scenario says that you should keep a backup offsite (i.e. not in your home.)

Scanning Legal Sized Docs?
A4 is not just British, it is an internationally-recognized standard (ISO 216) in use around the world. Just like the US clings to the outdated inches for measurement, the US clings to 8.5" x 11" paper. The US is the exception here, not the rule.

OpenDNS is a privacy nightmare. Use at your own risk.
From http://www.opendns.com/privacy:
OpenDNS collects non-personally-identifying information including the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request.
OpenDNS also collects potentially personally-identifying information like Internet Protocol (IP)... [more]

Whats the best way to deal with it if people are offended or try to discriminate against me? Ignore it, let it slide and move on?
As a Japanese person in Japan without tattoos, generally speaking all the advice here is good. You may receive some discrimination- that can't be helped really as tattoos are so tightly tied with the 'alternate economy' here in Japan. It's still pretty chilly here although spring is around the corner so if you're in long... [more]

Understanding tripods
Philip Greenspun (who else) did an early guide to tripods (circa 1992!) and another longer one on photo.net that's still basically valid.
The key thing to think about is that you don't want to use the center column at all if you can help it. Lots of people buy a smaller tripod for the lighter weight or cheaper cost and then end up using the center column to extend, which basically negates most of the benefit of the tripod itself. So if you are tall (like I am) you... [more]

You need permission from the police AND you need to be a seasoned winter mountaineering expert in order to get that permission. If you do not have the latter, there's no way you'll get the former, and even if you have the latter, you'll need crazy connections (which I assume you don't have if you're asking about this on AskMe) to make the former happen.

I try to buy all my storage either for use as standalone NAS or ensure it has a firewire port since (and this is just personal bias) storage should be hooked up with firewire or gigE+, period.
I agree 100%, and yet I look at the external storage market and it's 90% USB, 7% Firewire, and a fraction eSata/GigE.

I spent 2 weeks in NZ on both islands (5000 kms on a motorcycle) and although I really liked Wellington, and various parts of the North Island, the South Island was more impressive. Tourists are no longer allowed in the Tsukiji fishmarkets,
This is false information. I was in Tsukiji with friends from out of town last month. There were many other tourists in attendance inside the auction area (but in special cordoned off areas.)

Tsukiji is unusual. Everyone I have taken to Tsukiji has enjoyed it, even the non-sushi eaters.
I'm not sure what is interesting to you, but instead of Akihabara, I'd go to Nakano Broadway.
If you like art/design/etc. you cannot go wrong by visiting TokyoArtBeat and choosing something to go to.

Perfect wedding Gift for Mr. and Mrs. America?
If you have a lot of photos of your friend, or know people (her friends/family) who have photos of your friend, you could put together an album (either of her or her with her fiancée). This is the kind of gift that you can't "buy" and in that way is very special. For my wedding, my best man took photos and created a photo book which was even better than the photos from the professional we had hired. That was the best gift we received.

OpenDNS - Good or bad?
I'm the one who is skeptical about OpenDNS. Here's my concern in a nutshell in comment #62 on the NYTimes blog.
I don't trust OpenDNS to do the right thing with my query history.
I use multiple DNS servers during the day- at the office, at home, on wifi networks, etc. If OpenDNS had all of that data, all in one place, they would have a very significant profile of my Internet usage. I'm not comfortable with that. I don't trust them because all... [more]

I am Japanese. I live in Japan. I ride a motorcycle daily, but not in a gang.
There are a number of aspects to that story that do not ring true to me but the biggest one is pool cleaning?
There are very few pools in urban areas of Japan. Most of them are in hotels or sports clubs or schools who have staff to clean them. These are businesses or governments who would not be hiring guys in motorcycle gangs who moonlight as pool cleaners. Even... [more]

unSane is right. You have to inure yourself to rejection to a certain extent. Those who do not try, do not get rejected. Kudos to you for trying, and the more you try, the more often you'll be accepted as well as rejected. It happens to all of us who are attempting new things or applying ourselves towards something new.
Do not give up.
