Anonymous American in Rangoon
This was horrific in the face of over 100,000 deaths:
I went to the office, went to several monasteries and assessed damage here, back to the office for an awful meal of cheese sandwich and fries, back at my hotel just as a Yangon international school was hosting a year end bash by the pool. It was dozens of white expats with dozens more bottles of hard alcohol and beer, and talking about trips being taken to Switzerland, France, and the US in the coming summer.... [more]

As we made our way back to Yangon, I was quite conflicted and didn't know how to think through my confusions. As I said, I'm not an aid worker and I'm not a journalist. And I'm certainly not an aid worker or journalist with experience working in a disaster zone. And yet, there neither of these professions are now in Myanmar, which means that aid cannot be assessed or given and information cannot come out to the rest of the world. It seems that I can't help but try to do my part to help... [more]

paulsc, it could be fiction but if you read on and look at the level of detail the author provides for what s/he sees, would you still call accuse the author of fiction? What does an anonymous person benefit from providing such a report for the world outside of Myanmar to see? Do you truly believe someone who didn't experience what the writer wrote spent the time to fabricate such a length of prose?
Please use some common sense.

Couldn't just pick up a pen and paper back then?
Yes, but Clay's focus is on the impact of the Internet on society, specifically the parts of the Internet where people work together or share strength (open source software, wikipedia, forums, etc.)

srboisvert: They've created value for sure. For others but not for themselves. It isn't like they were doing open source programming and honing a real skill.
That's your opinion, not fact.
Writing a well-researched and referenced article, a la wikipedia, is a real skill, just like programming is.

FBI PowerPoint, Chinese Hackers, and Counterfeit Routers, Oh My!
Fortune has a fascinating article on how Microsoft changed their strategy to succeed in China.
Mundie also began talks with Chinese security officials to convince them that Microsoft's software was not a secret tool of the U.S. government. As a result, in 2003 the company offered China and 59 other countries the right to look at the fundamental source code for its Windows operating system and to substitute certain portions with their own software - something Microsoft had... Let me guess, you're not Asian-American. You yourself tell us that you are not of the generation of 'Sixteen Candles'. How are you in any way qualified to tell us what the impact of that stereotype was on Asian-Americans?

Journey, with Arnel on vocals, just played Viña del Mar, Chile: part 1, part 2, part 3 (poor video, poor audio but it gives you a feel of how he's doing.)
Also Neal Schon's WSJ quote on how the Internet is changing music A&R is obvious but important: "I think the days are over of major record companies flying around A&R guys to major cities to listen and find new talent," he says. "Wouldn't you think it's a plus to find what you want for your band,... [more]

(NSC) - RIP Ron Murphy, master vinyl cutter.
If you love dance music, you really owe it to yourself to listen to that interview.
Here in Tokyo a number of major dance music/vinyl record stores closed in quick succession last fall. It's getting harder and harder to find vinyl. Vinyl has been predicted to be dead for decades and yet it's still around. I hope that vinyl will be around for decades longer.

Titania: I can think of a scandal like this in the US - Paris Hilton sex video. After her fiasco made her more famous, people "leak" their own sex tapes for publicity.
I hate to state the obvious but Hong Kong is not the US. Hong Kong/Chinese laws on indecency are not the same as those in the US. Please don't compare the two as the are not comparable. These Chinese celebrities did not "leak" these images on purpose.

"You will explode after two minutes".
The only way tiny boats like that would be a threat to a DD would be if they rammed it while heavily loaded with explosives.
I'd have to disagree with this opinion. There are a number of hand-held, rocket-propelled weapons that could have damaged the warships or killed those on board.

The 2007 Japan Series
do the hams fight back in japan?
Yes, you have to fight hand-to-ham with your pork before you get to enjoy it.
Nippon Ham, a meatpacking company that bought the team in 1973, is the name of the team. Ergo, they are the Nippon Ham — Fighters.
