What options are there for a real-time, open source, video streaming (ogg Theora?) codec/platform/service? I have heard of Flumotion but was wondering if there are others like it in the US or Asia.

I need a bunch of evidence/information to educate a friend about the diamond industry; why it is a monopoly, how it has fueled civil wars in African nations, the current state of diamond mining, etc. I thought there was also a famous photojournalist (Salgado?) who took photos of a diamond mine in Africa as well. Can anyone help me gather information on why diamonds should not be purchased? Thank you in advance.

I'm travelling to Italy in late August and am looking for hotel recommendations for Milan, Florence, and Rome. I'm looking for not the most expensive, but not the least expensive. Maybe 3-4 stars? I'm also looking more for an "Italian" experience than a big chain hotel. I'd be happier in something that is smaller and older (if well kept) or more of a boutique-type place. I'll be travelling by train and won't have much more than 2 days per city, unfortunately, so a central location is important to me. If there are any Italians or Italy travellers who might be willing to advise me, I'd really appreciate it!

I'd like to create some mixed audio CDs where I would literally slow down/speed up parts of the songs to merge them together as a DJ does. I'm mainly planning to make club/dance music mixes, although I may do some downtempo/chill mixes too.

I'd like to import some tracks in from vinyl and would do that via my mixer (i.e. I know not to do it directly from the turntable itself.)

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best software to do some simple editing (I hear there is software that can cut hiss and needle pops and whatnot) and then the mixing? I have both XP and OS X, but I'm thinking I would prefer to do this on the Mac.

Anyone have any thoughts about the best GigE networked storage device? Should I roll my own? I have a hybrid environment (XP and OS X) and right now I backup the Powerbook with a Firewire HDD, but was thinking that networked storage would be best, but Firewire beats 100baseT Ethernet by 4X. My Powerbook supports GigE and I could add a GigE card to my XP machine for $50. Run some Cat 6. Replace my 10/100 router with a 10/100/1000 router. Is there such a thing as GigE networked storage for consumers?
