I've got a bunch of good mixes just waiting to be made.
I just want to point out that sciurius and robinpME both made awesome mixes; the all-cleveland disc makes me want to visit the city. some people there are making good music.
and before robin's disc, I had never heard the Be Good Tanyas version of "Lakes of Pontchartrain". I've been playing it daily. sometimes twice in a row. thanks guys!
uh, pointystick and [NOT HERMITOSIS-IST], did you send out your mixes yet?

Color coded usernames
Can I just say that after these two comments the level of dramatic tension about what the implied search would reveal was SKY HIGH.
Is there a greasemonkey script that will make me unsee that?

Temporary commenting lockout for bad behavior in AskMe?
As someone who occasionally has an askme answer deleted b/c of the seriousness rule, this thread raises at least one important question for me: There is cell-phone-blocking paint??
yeah, how does that work? enough copper particles to make a faraday cage, I'd guess.
also: I agree that baphomet's suggestion is really well phrased, but I don't think there is enough of a need to bypass good ol' human interaction/decision making.

Response to a point about the best way to answer an AskMe.
It's not a game..
but if it were, posting an answer like that is rolling a natural 1 on a d20.

What would be the worst way to begin an answer in Ask Metafilter?
Dear Jodie:
There is definitely a possibility that I will be killed in my attempt to answer your question. It is for this very reason that I am writing you this letter now.
As you well know by now I love you very much. Over the past seven months I've left you dozens of poems, letters and snarky comments in the faint hope... [more]

Towards civil discourse: are moral judgements verboten?
Hecklers, ftw, are not to be confused with gadflies. Gadflies sting, as do hecklers, but it is a sting intended to move an ass, not attract attention to yourself.
You know, when i thought you were just being rude for the sake of rudeness, it was somehow more tolerable than the idea that you apparently consider yourself a wit.

Darrin O'Brien is not amused
Not me. But as soon as he disables his account, I'll remove my favorite from the comment. I would encourage others to do the same.
But then hermitosis will never learn a valuable lesson about responsibility! you're chipping away at the moral structure of the internet!

but my gut says this is a crappy way of teaching kids about Castro.
iknowisbirfmark, if you re-read the thread, you'll find that the overwhelming opinions are:
1: people don't care what your gut thinks
2: if YOU think your gut is correct, contact the original poster.

White people on Metafilter
smackfu said: Metafilter is lower-middle class at best. Lots of poor grad students and such here.
if I take a year off from work to backpack around Europe, am I "poor" because I don't have any income? This sort of disconnect is just what that website is pointing out, albeit in a not-that-funny way.
Metafilter has lots of people who have enough free time in their day to post. Either they aren't at work, aren't that... [more]

seven and a half feet tall, weighs 113 pounds, has green hair down to his waist and a long pink handlebar mustache.
i've seen a guy matching this description barrelling down 5th ave on a bike. I fervently hope he's on metafilter.

Oh, and speaking of Full House, did anyone else hear Bob Saget on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me this weekend? Hilarious!
I did. I laughed a lot, actually. Still amazes me he was the dad on Full House.
