Let's Talk About Killing Zombies
Lovers of all things undead will be happy to know that Night Shade is publishing a nice big anthology of zombie short stories tomorrow/tuesday, The Living Dead. It was edited by John Joseph Adams who also did their excellent post-apocalyptic collection earlier this year. It's a must-buy for me.

Plurality of Words
I loved it. It's a big story that fits the length of the book. The first 50 or so pages can be challenging because of the made-up words, but a glossary is provided. It won't bother those who regularly read sci-fi/fantasy, but I could easily understanding folks who aren't accustomed to reading those type of books finding it hard going.

Also, in case others were interested in the cloistered/sequestered human super-species aspect of the first act, I'd like to recommend another author: Scott Bakker and The Prince of Nothing trilogy. Instead, this time they emerge to subjugate the rest of the world. It's a very good, philosophical read as well.

Ah, that is campaign-suspending horrific. But never, ever underestimate the stupidity of the American public. They fucking love this sack of wet mice.

The world’s worst disease
Ah Lesch-Nyhan. Just some of that medical school fodder that gets beaten into young doctors. I can still remember way way too much about something that I'm sure I'll never see in practice.

An introduction to Bletchley Park
Not that it was in any doubt, but Jeff VanderMeer received an ARC of Anathem and it looks like another door-stopper. Thankfully my furious masturbation habit has yielded the additional benefit of an incredibly strong wrist. Looks like I'm gonna need it.

I lost interest in the plot and other sundry details during season two. I'm mostly along for the ride in that respect. The real reason I keep watching is Evangeline Lilly. At the risk of being exceedingly crass, I'd just like to say that if I ever had a shot at her, I'd hit it so hard that if you could pull me out, you would be the king of England.

The Androids are coming!
If they were, they would have bid more for the spectrum.
They had no interest in buying the 700 MHz. They bid up to force the 'open access' rules of the auction. They did everyone a favor.

Yay! I learned a new word.
Seriously great hour. I listened this weekend. It's a nice plain-english explanation of some of the mechanics behind the whole mortgage-CDO alchemy (triple B to AAA?).

I debated about posting it, but I really got a kick out of it at work today. I figured for a friday night, somebody might stumble in three-sheets tonight and have a quick laugh.
And this is exactly how I feel about all of the really really bad (I'm looking at you Total Recall) B-action movies that I love: it is so horrifically awful that it becomes TOTALLY FUCKING AWESOME.

Essays by Charles Bardes, M.D.
The funny thing about doing autopsies, especially forensic autopsies, is the atmosphere around the table. Usually I can be found cracking jokes, making wholly unprofessional observations (especially if none of the clinicians have shown up to see their former patient's autopsy), and generally having a good time. If the clinicians are there, you can make them really nervous (especially the surgeons) if you can make them think that they did something to cause the patients death - in today's... [more]

What sort of jokes - in particular, what sort of crazy funny good-looking widow jokes do autopsy technicians make?
Generally the type of low-brow, juvenile humor that you'd expect from jaded middle-aged multiply-divorced, almost-misogynistic guys. The kind that probably makes most mature listeners cringe and that I shouldn't find funny (but I do). Ahem.

77th Earl of Groan
Loved the first two. Like crazy love - I've read them over and over. Gormenghast is an amazing creation. But I hate, hate Titus Alone.
His editor fucked Titus Alone (here's Edelman, who wrote the introduction to the new Overlook edition, talking about it) after Peake's Parkinson induced dementia started taking over.
I have an older omnibus from Overlook, but it looks like I'm off to buy the new editions. They look great.... [more]

SF Site on the novels. I was going to link to Moorcock's essay (but you've already done that). Fantastic post.

I believe there was originally to have been a fourth novel in the series.
It was to be called Titus Awakes. Here's a couple of fragments of it.
A fifth book, called Gormenghast revisited, was also planned.

Yeah I read Peake after I read Perdido Street Station because Mieville praised Peake so highly. But then again, he's a commie.

Also, Americans should pause for a brief moment of silence while we honor this ferocious species. They, along with Patrick Swayze, saved us from certain doom after the Russians and Cubans invaded us in WWIII. WOLVERINES!

As a big genre fan who lives in the US (and has never read any Banks except The Algebraist) I'm ecstatic that Orbit started a US imprint. I've already read a bunch of the stuff that they've put out over here, most recently K.J. Parker's Engineer trilogy which was excellent.

Some of the SF/space opera I've really enjoyed recently: Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamilton. Some of the hyperviolent/ass-kicking SF that's just been great recently: Neal Asher, and Richard K. Morgan (who got robbed because Thirteen (Black Man in the UK)) isn't on the Hugo nominations this year (Robert J. Sawyer again?).

I was taken aback when I saw the cover of the new Stross book. It's fucking terrible. I may skip that one just because of it (and I've read everything he's put out).
It reminds me of when I imported all the Stephen Erikson paperbacks from the UK with really great cover art that really captured the feel of the series. Then Tor US gave him a nice hardcover first edition in the states with this turd of a cover. Talk about getting it all wrong.... [more]
