In late 2006, Santhi Soundarajan took the Silver Medal in the Women's 800m at the Asian Games in Qatar. Less than a week later, she was
stripped of her medal by the Olympic Council of Asia after a chromosomal test.
According to the Times of India, "the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said the 25-year-old had failed a sex test, implying she had deceived the sporting world by competing as a woman when she was actually a man." The disqualification ended her athletic career, and several months after returning to her rural village in Tamil Nadu, India, she
attempted suicide.

The Pentagon's $1 Trillion Problem.
Even as the Defense Department prepares to send Congress its
$481.4B FY2008 budget request, it also prepares to admit -- for the 18th year in a row -- that its finances are in such poor shape that it is effectively impossible to audit or account for over a trillion dollars in past expenses.

How can I make a growable hardware RAID-5 Linux system? Is LVM the right choice, or am I setting myself up for trouble? Lots of geeky details follow.

How do I restart an X Windows application running on a remote machine, and have it display on that computer's locally-attached display? (I
do not want to forward/tunnel it to the machine I'm sitting at.)

Can anyone recommend a phone for tethered EDGE data use with a PC, and basic voice calls? GSM, T-Mobile, Motorola preferred but not absolutely required. I've done some research but I'm a bit confused.

I distinctly remember reading a thread in AskMe a few weeks (?) ago, where someone was asking, in a nutshell, 'how do I get sent to Iraq as a defense contractor?' It might not have been that, exactly, but it related to jobs as a defense contractor, or maybe overseas jobs in general, or maybe just 'dangerous jobs.' I think it specifically mentioned the idea of defense contracting (Blackwater, etc.), and the question related to how one gets their foot in the door.
I can't find this, using any combination of searches or tags, looking under all the logical terms (jobs, employment, iraq, all combinations thereof).
Does anyone else remember or have a link to this thread? Or did I just totally hallucinate it?

What blog/CMS software would you recommend that doesn't rely on MySQL or another database backend?

I have a bunch of files, in a nested directory structure. I'd like to collapse the directory structure and move all the files into one folder, preferably sorting them by file extension or name. How do I do this as quickly and easily as possible in WinXP? (Using Cygwin is OK if that's the only way to do it.)

[DirtyPowerFilter] My CRT monitor has developed a nasty shake/vibration at certain refresh settings, since I moved to a new apartment. I think the problem stems from the old electrical system. Is there anything I can do to "clean" the power and alleviate the problem? Or are all "power conditioning" products bogus? Backstory and more info below the fold.

I'm looking for a good computer-parts store in or around the DC Metro area; 'good' meaning one that has "junk bins" of parts that can be pawed through, lots of used gear, no salespeople, etc. Specifically not a big-box store.

Which is best for the long-term storage of slides: Kodak-style slide carousels, or polypropylene sleeves? In addition to scanning, I want to try to preserve the analog originals for the next generation in my family. But how to do it?

Does anyone remember an older Macintosh single-player shareware role-playing-game, possibly called "Boden," "Boden," or some variation thereof?
