Ask post: Do film cameras have any unique benefits?
I read somewhere that digital cameras won't approach film resolution until they hit about 50 megapixels... but as someone said upthread, that doesn't really matter unless you are making gigantic prints..

I sold an old fully manual Nikon FM2 to get a Nikon D50 (their low-end DSLR at the time), and while I do wish I had held onto the FM2 for nostalgia's sake and for black and white prints, digital photography is pretty fantastic and I recommend the Nikon DSLRs whoelheartedly.

Ask post: Would you like some more tax sir?
Scholarship/stipend/bursary income is no longer taxable as of 2006 regardless of whether you are studying at a Canadian or a foreign university, so long as you are paying tuition. There are however distinct advantages for you to still file your Canadian taxes, even if you are not required to pay any tax. Tuition fees you pay at an overseas school can still be registered for tax credit purposes (you just need to have the appropriate form filled in by your school), and then carried on to future... Even if you are not technically paying tuition b/c your university is covering it, you can still claim the Education Amount based on the number of months you are enrolled full time by completing form TLL1A (for students at foreign universities). Proving that you were enrolled will meet the requirements I spoke of earlier, and mean that you do not have to declare your stipend as income.

Ask post: Pit stop.
I use roll-on myself and don't have any problems with it; I was just curious as to whether the different types are ever marketed as being for different uses, or whether they are only distinguishable as a comfort/personal preference thing.

Ask post: I don't have any real life friends. What should I do?
I'm not sure I can answer all your questions, but as far as this one goes:

how do I make friends? And not just acquaintances, but intelligent, interesting friends who unconditionally want to be around me?

I would say that it's a mistake to think that being a good friend means wanting to be around someone 'unconditionally'. Perhaps you have too high expectations of what friendship needs to be, and so constantly see failure... [more]

In the US legal system it is used to pinpoint a specific part of a cited statute. For example, 17 U.S.C. § 102. In contrast, the English and Canadian legal systems would use "s" in the same place, ie The Telecommunications Act, s. 102.

Ask post: illustrating plagiarism
Neither the iphone knockoff or the Warhol soup painting is an example of plagiarism in a manner that is meaningful in the academic context, so I'd shy away from those. The first one is illegal only if sold as an Apple iPhone when it is not in fact that product, and the second is (in most jurisdictions) a legitimate use of a trademark for the purposes of comment or review.

You need to be more clear with your students as to what the core of academic... [more]

I didn't mean 10.5.3 actually -- MS released a service pack fixing bugs in Office 2008. It fixes quite a few bugs, including Spaces, which I can now happily use again.

Ask post: Are the numbers enough?
As a fairly recent graduate of Osgoode Hall, I don't think you would have any problem getting in with a 169 and 3.5, so long as your 3.5 wasn't from an unbelievably terrible school. Do some volunteer work or something over the next year, and definitely try and get good recommendation letters. If you write in your application why you h avea burning desire to study law (particuarly if you can spin it in a social justice orientation if you apply to Osgoode), I don't think you will have much... Loiseau, you are somewhat right... here is a letter from the Privacy Commisioner of Canada to Google regarding Streetview.

The letter suggests that there is a means of removing yourself from Streetview, though of course that's not especially useful if you don't know you're even on it.

end it, and tell her you don't want to live in the same house with her. one of two things will happen -- she will hate you and certainly not want to live with you and will pull out of the living arrangement, or she will want to stay out of spite and you will have to suck it up and live somewhere else. either way, break up with her and DO NOT LIVE WITH HER, no matter what.

Ask post: Loan Woes
Just to follow on from electroboy, there could be another reason for her ineligibility for Canadian student loans (ie, she defaulted on a previous loan, or was found misrepresenting her income when applying for one). If however this is not the case, then (certainly in Ontario at least) provincial student loans will pay up to $7000/year for study at a recognised non-Canadian institution.

Ask post: Can't you be more careful?
You can register a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office, see here. They can't award you compensation though, if that is what you are looking for; that would require you taking the council in question to court. To do that, you would need to prove some damages. What the ICO can do is investigate and see if there are insufficient safeguards used by your local council in safeguarding personal data, and make them alter their practices.

Ask post: Heading out on our own...
I went to law school at York, and knew some people that lived in those same apartments. They are nice enough, but the biggest problem is locale. The York campus is really in the middle of nowhere, and there's nothing around you can walk to outside of the campus shopping centre / food court. There's also not exactly a vibrant student life, especially at the graduate level. You can get a bus (20 mins) to the subway which will take you downtown, and that will cost you 2.75 a time (or less if... [more]

several more words in the form of a sentence: take her around your neighborhood so she gets a sense of where she is. get her a key made if you can. show her where the grocery store is so she can go get stuff for dinner. that can be a fun experience overseas in and of itself. show her how the public transit works so she feels comfortable riding it by herself when you are not around. you don't specifically where you are in japan, but if you post... i'd stick to the stuff that is related to staying over and waking up in the morning... this means NO to the stuff about porn, video games, dvds, whisky, etc. That's pointless.. if you want to give him that stuff b/c he likes it, cool, but there's no point in using this (very nice I think) drawer "gesture" to do that. Yes there is no magic compromise solution to be found here, because monogamy and polygamy are essentially opposites. There's no middle ground where you can say "monogamy is what I need, but I'm willing to compromise and let you sleep with two or three other people, but not 10". I mean, if you can say, that's cool and would solve your problem, but that's not monogamy.

So the question is, has been stated, do either of you love the other person ENOUGH to give... [more]

Ask post: How to mitigate size problems in sex?
remember that men tend to be much more visually stimulated than women (which is why so many more men look at porn than women (yes, i know, plenty of women enjoy porn too)) when it comes to sex. so if they enjoy the visual show from behind, that's a big part of what is making it easier for them to climax that way, rather than any particular physical aspect of it.

Ask post: Why do I deserve happiness when there are other people in the world who don't have it?
You don't deserve happiness. No-one does. To look at it any other way just seems grossly self-centred to me.

But you do have some ability to make yourself happy, and since happiness is not a finite resource in the world, doing something to increase your own happiness is no bad thing because it does not automatically decrease somebody else's access to happiness.

It really doesn't sound like you are leading a life people would envy, as you claim in your opening sentence. In fact, it sounds like a pretty shitty existence.

I say this not merely to snark, but to suggest that perhaps your whole perception of your own life and others around is entirely out-of-whack. If you're on a ton of meds, this might explain some of yet.

I'm tempted to agree with gramcracker. If money is an issue, go with something old. My parents still use an old G4 "desklamp" style iMac that they bought brand new whenever it came out x number of years ago. I find it a bit annoying to use when I go visit them since I am used to my Macbook, but they are perfectly content. They surf the web and use MS Word. That's it. It does all those things just fine and never breaks. I dunno how much they go for used, but it can't be much.
