MeFi post: Spoiler Alert.
When the husband and I watched Signs we had a different view of the ending then most. Maybe it's because we're both asthmatics, but we thought the alien was about to CURE that kid of his asthma, but then his big dopey bro had to just beat the life out him. We thought the aliens were good, enlightened and stumbled upon a culture that was dumb, brutal and fearful. That family put all their trust into a faith that always let them down. Poor aliens. They were just trying to help with something they... [more]

MeFi post: Insert Office Space Jokes here. Or don't.
I don't know if this is real or not, but I could see it happening and I'd be surprised if anyone would jump in. I'd think most would flee. Perhaps that's sad and unheroic, but self-preservation is a strong urge. When people flip out on the public transit not many people interact, me included. Whenever someone starts to yell incoherent ramblings on the rail everyone seems to just clam up and hope the nutter gets off on the next stop - which they seem to usually do - and the train collectively... MeFi post: I have a scrambler in my brain.
Oh I really liked this. Thanks! I have Tom Waits on the brain right now. I had a wonderful dream the other night where he was the Attending at the hospital I work at - reading chemo orders out loud in a wrinkled lab coat. The husband and I are going to see him in Tulsa.

The husband's band conflicts with the Houston show date so we picked Tulsa as a little mini vacation. Jones Hall would be nice - I love all that red inside that hall - but the Brady in Tulsa looks like an interesting place too. I'm getting rather excited about Tulsa. It looks like a quirky town.

MeFi post: The Great White Way?
I liked it!

I don't know why I do this, but with some regularity I like to imagine people around me breaking out into some sort of show tune like song and dance about whatever is going on. It is seriously fun. Imagine - you're at work, the grocery store, on the public transit - and everyone starts to sing about it and dance step over the backs of chairs.

I know in real life it would probably sound awful and be annoying, but in my imagination... [more]

MeFi post: Essays by Charles Bardes, M.D.
Enjoyed the essays. Working with people when they are ill can be so immediately intimate and personal and he captures some of those moments well.

My dad was a neuro pathologist and he and his coworkers did make a lot of weird jokes in and out of autopsies. He always cut birthday sheet cakes in a Y as if it were a chest incision. He laughed and laughed at this every time. And he would tell classmates our family stored brains for dissection in the bathtub. Dumb and... [more]

MeFi post: What goes up...
Good grief! The article is worth reading. What a sad story. Poor guy.

A few years ago at a hospital in my city a surgical resident died trying to catch an elevator (Warning : linked article is full of scary elevator stories). It was rather horrific: the door closed on him while he was partially in, trapping him in the doors and then it began to move to the next floor, decapitating him. There was a Physician's Assistant in that elevator, trapped for over an hour with... [more]

MeFi post: Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the uninvited guest
I think Wolfdog sums it up pretty well. The dogs in that article are really not behaving very well.

My mom had a dog she was really attached to. She often referred to him as the "only person around" when all the kids were off at college. A ex-boyfriend noticed this attachment and dotted on the dog. When we broke up my mom drove me nuts with continually saying: but he was so nice to Bruiser..." and therefore I should have found some way to stay with this... [more]

I wonder if that intern was referencing Aging With Dignity's Five Wishes, a document that is accepted in 40 States (and generally honored in the others, including mine, Texas). If so, sorry you got a weird introduction to it. These conversations should not come off as weird or veiled to the patient and family. Many people live active full lives with late... [more]

This is sad. Only 33 years old.

I heard about this yesterday after I got home from work because my partner has edited some of the local dirty south videos over the years. I have very little awareness of rap music in general, but living in Houston and with an editor I get to hear some of the local artists. I heard the following songs over and over again as they were edited and grew rather fond of both:

MeFi post: Black Friday Youtubery
At first I felt bad for the EMS workers having to come help the people that fell and got trampled. Then I thought of all the weird places EMS workers have to probably go to help people and figured the mall maybe wasn't the worst of it for them. But then again, the mostly young healthy people that make up EMS teams are ruining their backs picking up all these large people.

It's hard for me to understand why the fervor that surrounds this experience is fun for people.... [more]

MeFi post: Cell Phone Vigilante
I was on a public bus once where a man had a very loud and long conversation on his cell. When he finished the homeless-looking man across from him started reaching for the phone while saying: "Gimme here." Cellphone guy looked a little alarmed, homeless guy simply says: "Lemme make a call." Homeless guy was completely serious. The guy with the phone looked completely freaked out. It was a fun little performance to watch. Sometimes I really love the theater of public transit.

I really love the relationship between Burton and Price. They both seem to share this love of spooky story telling and the work they did together is so fun. Price's role in Edward Scissorhands is so great: an eccentric mad inventor in the middle of an insane suburbia. What a perfect final role for Price's long career. Sorry to be such a gushy fan, but I guess that's what I am here and this post has suddenly put me in the mood for halloween.

MeFi post: All Creatures Great and Small
Another border collie owner here. We got ours from a friend who was a teacher at an elementary school in a somewhat rough neighborhood. He watched the then homeless dog try and herd the parents cars as they dropped their kids off. After a few days he had to stop her. We took her and it took a long time to ween her off cars. She would hear them and you could see it in her face that it was driving her crazy - those cars - driving around randomly with no collie containing them properly. She was a... [more]

MeFi post: Death finds us (furb)all
I love this story. There are signs that most hospice workers / family and other people that are around end of life care notice about people that are about the die: extremities get cooler to touch as blood shunts to interior organs (the floppy lower part of an earlobe might suck inward touching the side of the head), peripheral pulses may disappear on the feet and sometimes on the wrists, breathing becomes slower with occasional gasps, and with long spaces between breaths, secretions become... Aww. I loved the Weekly World News too. I remember the Michael Jackson face melting story. Other favorite tales that have rattled around in my brain for decades now are one about a girl for whom an ambulance had to be called because the jeans she was trying on were so tight she got trapped in them in the dressing room, and, perhaps my favorite:

a man, who after a hard day at work, came home to sit on the toilet and smoke, threw his cigarette butts in the can which then... [more]

MeFi post: Nurses speak out: Grey's Anatomy sucks, Sonic Youth rules
Well said, thatweirdguy2. Another RN here. Say what you will about the writing style, but the Center for Nurse Advocacy has a point. There is a vast public misunderstanding of what nursing is about. This thread demonstrates some of that.

I might disagree with some of their reviews, but if pointing out misperceptions in popular culture gets their site some attention and makes any non-health worker think about this at all then that's a good start.

I my gosh I loved the inversion house! I live right across the street and it became this wonderful community center for it's existence. Every evening people would walk their dogs and kids over to it and just hang around. People really would almost run into each other as they slowed their cars to look.

Now it's a pretty awesome coffee house, appropriately called Inversion. Free Wifi and cold-drip brewed iced coffee. Yum.

When they built it they covered the entire building with this black tarp. It looked like a place getting treated for termites or something uneventful like that. So it was pretty easy to visually forget it was there during construction.

Then when they took the tarp off when it was finished it was like BAM! Overnight! Look what crazy thing happened to this house! Like 2or3ws mentions.

Here's the Art League of Houston's 2005 press release about it.... [more]

Yeah 20r3ws - If I remember correctly it was just black outline paint at first and then a few nights later filled in. I think it was just before they took the whole thing down.

Not to totally change the subject, but I have mixed feelings for the tagers. I love what Yar does. And the desperately positive responses that Give Up prompts with his posters are fascinating. One of the 3 ER's I worked at as a tech during nursing school had a 24 hr. non-emergent clinic next to it. That way the triage nurse was able to send the people who where there for cold/flu, pharmacological questions/refills, and other non-emergency issues next door. I've seen a few other ER's in the area work toward this direction.

I remember missing that clinic when I moved to another ER that didn't have one. In my ideal world I remember thinking there would be other... [more]
