Pounding waves of colorful bands of creeps
Any ideas?
I can recommend some songs for a mix tape.

Perhaps he has some history with other posters here and projects his characterizations of those on to the rest of the population?
Well, Skot and I did date briefly back in the 80s.

The Green Should Be White
I have nothing particular to contribute here, other than my belief that any suggestion made in obvious good faith by a longtime member of the community should be duly and deliberately considered.
That said, I would love to have Known Friend of Matt Haughey on a t-shirt.

the links above are all single-link news items
By what metric are most of those "news" items? They seem, to me, to be unique things on the web that folks here find interesting. Which is why we're here, n'est pas?

SXSW 2006. Who's attending?...
SWSX Baby! has tracked who's going in the past, but it doesn't look like it's being updated.
We're tweaking the site in preparation for its relaunch later this month.
And yeah, I'm going.

What was your very first impression of MetaFilter,...
My first impression of MetaFilter, with apologies to my friend Matt, was profound disinterest. It was one of the first "weblogging" environments with integrated commenting I'd seen, but that was about all that really distinguished it for me.
Why should I post links to interesting things I found on the web here, I wondered, when I have my own website? I still feel that way most often, which is one of the reasons I rarely post here.
Only... [more]

The category list may be infallible, but I'm we're not. It took me a good five minutes or so to find the server-swap bug reports thread, until I realized it was in the "Uptime" category rather than the "Bugs" category. ;-)

Ghost posts! Yesterday's fifth and sixth posts -- double posts about Google, by the way, and geez, Matt, can't you link to something everyone hasn't already seen?! -- still show up on the front page, but clicking through passes to "Nothing to see here...".

oh brad, I think you're hitting index.cfm instead of the proper index.mefi page (which I used to redirect to, I'll do that now).
My bookmark points to just www.metafilter.com without any document specified. I'm still seeing the ghost posts. S'OK, as long as they're friendly ghosts, I suppose. ;-)

It's true, though. When I specifically ask for index.mefi, the ghosts have been exorcised. Thanks, Father Matt!!

Does anyone else feel slightly disappointed when they check in on MeTa and there haven't been any new posts for what seems like ages?
Oh, good heavens, no. Given that the bulk of what winds up here tends to be coarse language and rude names thrown about without regard for anyone's feelings or without respect for the participants' differing viewpoints, I'm -- somewhat disingenuously -- thrilled to see there are no great dust-ups hereabouts.... off topic: I think frykitty deserves some serious props for her good humour, politeness, and cool attitude
I don't think that's off-topic at all. If I take Su's question correctly, he's asking or proposing we discuss what constitutes the progress of polite, rational discourse hereabouts. Frykitty's (and, I think, cCranium's) posts are a good example of providing information while trying to move the conversation beyond a point on which it has gotten... [more]

I've got a sneaking suspicion that a few MeFi'ers actually are celebrities
I, for example, am Tom Cruise. Wanna buy a duck?
(Seriously, I know of at least one well-known motion picture actor who reads MetaFilter fairly regularly and who has posted occasionally. And leave us not forget TV'S WIL WHEATON.)

a blogger or two should be perfectly harmless
Famous last words. (Advice: Lock the liquor cabinet, send virtuous daughters away for the weekend, and double your homeowner's insurance.)
Anyone who gawks and points at me without coming up to say hi and introduce themselves will be, themselves, summarily ridiculed and forced to buy everyone a round of drinks. It's the SXSW way.

Devil's Advocate: But for the addition of a voting process (utterly non-scientific and meaningless), how does this practice of Dave Winer selecting a few of his favorite and/or considered notable weblogs differ significantly from, say, Blogger's Blogs of Note (which are all powered by Blogger) or the Movable Type Spotlight (which are, presumably, all powered by Movable Type)?
As means of aggrandizement of their respective tools or as a way to spotlight clever uses... [more]

What is THIS? Tony Danza making a comeback??...
As I was walking by the lake this evening, a little girl was riding her Danza in the middle of the water. She still had her water wings on as she wobbled and struggled to paddle. It reminded me of when I was little and how badly I wanted a Danza but couldn't they hadn't yet been invented. My parents wouldn't let me have a dinghy until I was 12; my mom was too afraid I'd drown myself. I'd pass the boating section in the store and just look, having given up asking my parents about it long ago. I... [more]

Descriptionless posts are a peeve of mine, not because I want to piddle on anyone's creativity but because six months from now, when I'm searching the archives, I'm much more likely remember a keyword from the description than I am to recall whether it was posted with just the linktext "Wow!" or "Holy cow!" or "A feel good story".
A good description or amplification of a link is not just for now, it's for posterity.
