House of Gauss
What it means is that all that neat dancin' stuff was CGI. Not really real. For some reason many people on the net are seeing this and thinking there are literally pink and blue visible magnetic lines dancing around, like it's something you could step into a room somewhere and see some crazy, otherworldly magic science Akira auras.
But yeah, it's just CGI.

A warning that the site makes loud obnoxious noises upon loading would be appreciated for those who want to avoid the embarrassment I just endured in my quiet office, when whoopee-whistles and cartoon sound-effects started screaming out of my computer.

For clarity, what offended me so about link #12 wasn't the picture, it was the audio ad that launched when I went to the page. I can't recall ever having that happen before like that. It was just like a frickin' radio ad.
I was just kidding about stripping iamkimiam's posting ability.

From one man's take on watching the movie:"It’s amusing to me how a show that celebrates materialism, selfishness, class-ism, and Whiteness can have such a broad following. When looking for an apartment in a “low income” district, Miranda and her White nanny remark disapprovingly about the all-Asian neighbors. In fact, Miranda says, “Oh, look! One white person! Follow him” and, much to her relief, finds one White person living amongst the minorities.... [more]

After reading the comments on this video on some other sites, the big-time Guitar Hero fans are pissed that the video seems to make a mockery of their favorite fake-guitar-playing video game.

Distributed computing: something for everyone, a call to arms.
I used to enjoy running Folding@Home until they came out with the PS3 client. It just kicks the ever-living hell out of the PC client. 50,000 PS3s generate 1500 TFLOPs while 200,000 PCs generate 188 TFLOPs.* I don't see the need to peg out my CPU and heat up my case any further when I'm accomplishing less than 100th of the work as some idle game console.

stbalbach, regarding wear and tear on solid state components, I can only offer an anecdote from my own experience:
My first F@H client was a home-built Athlon XP 2500+. I kept F@H on it so that it never went to idle. I was either gaming, using it, or it was running at 100% load form F@H at all times. It ran hot at stock speeds anyway, but I had overclocked it from 1.8 GHz to 2.2 GHz. It had a cooler and fan on it louder than any I've ever heard outside of a server room.... [more]

That comic is hilarious. Man. Still laughing. Almost as funny as yelling "Free Tibet" at a Chinese rock concert. It would interesting to see him get away from the over-designed figures and adopt a slightly more minimalistic look. Think of the time it takes to create each intricately detailed panel!

Los Angeles libraries offer video games to kids
"You go into these small libraries in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the teens have been gone now for 25 years. ... And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to books or database access or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-videogame sentiment or anti-trade-paperback sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

On the 28th of March LiveLeak.com was left with no other choice but to remove the film "fitna" from our servers following serious threats to our staff and their families. Since that time we have worked constantly on upgrading all security measures thus offering better protection for our staff and families. With these measures in place we have decided to once more make this video live on our site. We will not be pressured into censoring material which is legal and within our... [more]

The Myth of the Media Myth: Games and Non-Gamers
is there anything in video game land that is the relative equivalent of, I don't know, Moby Dick, or The Great Gatsby, or Anna Karenina, or that old Mefi standby, Lolita?*ahem* BioShock.
I've been playing video games for over twenty years. I haven't played every game, but I've played an awful lot of them. I think BioShock is the closest equivalent to a great classic novel yet achieved it the medium. Its setting is incredibly rich and detailed. The art... [more]
