I wish someone would do something about how fat I am.

[DC Gym filter] For downtown D.C. Washington Sports club members specifically. Which location do you belong to: K street or Connecticut Ave? Pros/cons of your location? And if you've been to both, would you recommend one over the other?

Can I start using my new name now?

I want to start using a new last name, but it's likely going to be several months before I can officially change it. What problems could come up if I start using my new name now?

Email Alias Creator: Does Such a Thing Exist?

Are there any free (and non-sketchy) services out there that would allow me to create an e-mail alias that would re-direct to 30 people?

Recruiters at job prospect want to contact current employers

[JobFilter] I've been through two interviews, they've contacted my references, and now the "last step" in the application process is for them to contact my current employers -- who don't know I want to leave. How normal is this? What should I do?

Help me not be sketchy

Job application ethics question. A job I started last month isn't working out, so I recently interviewed for a job at another firm. The prospective employer wants me to submit an application form in which I list my current employer (including my current supervisor's name and contact info). It would save me a lot of angst if I could leave my 2-month-old current job off this form entirely. Is it OK if I do that?

Insane to Try to Leave a Job Right After Starting It?

Should I try to leave the job I just started?

Working hard for the non-money

[I got a master's degree for this?] Filter. I just got a job offer for a barely-livable amount of money. Other applications are pending. Please tell me whether my expectations are insane, and how to plot my next move.

What's the step BEFORE "newbie" called?

I'm getting into learning web design -- started with the basics of HTML, XHTML, and CSS, and want to move on to JavaScript and Ajax next. Problem: I have zero, and I mean zero, programming experience.

Help me not act like a freak when interviewing for my dream job

I am insanely nervous for an interview I have tomorrow for what is essentially my dream job. Any advice to avoid allowing my nerves to get the better of me and screwing it up?

What we have here... is a failure to communicate

Calling all AskMefites who work for a strategic communications firm or in corporate communications: how did you get your gig?

ISO noodles

Anyone in the D.C./northern Virginia area had luck finding stores selling the House Foods tofu shirataki noodles that blogs like Hungry Girl won't shut up about? I really don't want to resort to ordering them from Amazon.

D.C. temp agencies

Recommendations for D.C.-area temp agencies? Bonus points if you've had good experiences with one that led to a permanent job at a corporation, foundation, or non-profit.

Remember, remember the fifth of November

Does anyone know of Guy Fawkes (aka Bonfire Night) celebrations going on in the D.C. metro area this weekend? Or, alternatively, any suggestions for parks or other places where my friends and I could (legally) make a small bonfire of our own? Thanks!

Inexpensive (and unscary) hotels: Seattle/Portland

We're two recent grad-school graduates on a budget, travelling to Portland and Seattle in a couple of weeks. Any recommendations for relatively inexpensive hotels in both cities? (Previous Seattle questions have brought up the Moore Hotel, but in case they're booked, any alternative suggestions?) Thanks!

Jangly Jam-soundtrack goodness

What's-that-song filter. Anyone know the name of the song that plays in the first half of NBC's Jim-and-Pam centric commercial for the new season of "The Office"?

Which side of the pond should I live on?

Where-to-live filter: specifically, which side of the pond. Help me figure out where I should settle after grad school. If you have lived in both the U.S. and the UK/Europe, which did you prefer, and why?

Blogging While Politicking

Jerry Brown, Mayor of Oakland, has one. Ray Cox, MN State Representative, has one. Anyone know of other good blogs written by politicians?
