I didn't have to take algebra until 9th grade (and then algebra II in 11th). I failed so hard on the algebra test at college that they were astounded. (Srsly, I'm horrific at math.) Fuck this sort of thing. I'm the youngest (of 2) and I'm constantly being suffocated by my parents. (For example, if I go to the drug store after work, which means I would be home a grand total of a half hour later than normal, I get a string of panicked phone calls because OMG YOU COULD BE DEAD IN A DITCH.) Fuck graduations. At my HS one, my whole row was hammered (everyone brought something different and planned it all the day before at the practice). At the college one, I was high as a kite.
About 2 people cheered for me at my HS one, but more laughed when I damn near busted my ass walking down the slippery stairs. In college, apparently people yelled 'bangin!' for me.

I think that the biggest fuckup is the American education system. Caveat: I fucking hate math and need a calculator to do anything. Like add up the money in my drawer at the end of my shift.

My mom and pops do this (and have done so since I can recall.) My mom goes to bed at around 8pm. My dad sits in the living room reading/making phone calls/watching the news. When my dad goes to bed at around 1230 (shortly after Nightline), my mom moves into the living room to alternate between the two chairs and the couch until 3am when she gets ready to go to work. (She also snores like a lawnmower but my dad sleeps like a rock.)

I love duct tape.

My floor duct-taped a dude to a chair once because we were drunk and thought it was hilarious. (Dude volunteered.) We then proceeded to wheel his ass out to the quad and shoved him around on the long sidewalks. Security thought it was hilarious. Loads of pictures were taken and posted on our website. My father looooooooooves his floppy disks. He has boxes and boxes of them with various files hidden on them. I've recently managed to get him to move to CDs, but when I tried to bring up the idea of using one of those USB drive thingys, he turned pale.
He also paid extra cash (about $35) to have a floppy disk drive put in my new computer...just in case. Heh.

I think that I'm too young to have ever had this on my radar (I'm 22) but I'm sure my folks have seen it. They don't talk about this sort of thing (and certainly never mentioned it when around me or my brother who is much older than I am). I do remember them having stored food and water in the basement though (still do).

With regard to the whole "why doesn't it just decline when he overspends" thing, sometimes what the card will do is not decline the charge, but later, when it goes through to the card, they will slap on the fee in addition to what the original charge was.
