Freedom Flies
I've lost the ability to distinguish reality from satire. I don't know if this is reality's fault, or mine.

2 Real Prices of Gas
It's cool that gold is back in the news now that it finally broke its previous all-time high set in 1980. If it were a stock that had taken 28 years to recover in nominal terms, it'd be getting laughed at.

"Garlic: The Silent Killer," "Juicy Beans," and 39 other fascinating projects of SCIENCE!
My friends made a functional coilgun as high school physics project using some soda can-sized capacitors and a transformer from a neon sign. It fired a nail (sans head) at potentially-lethal speeds, and their genius teacher let them fire it inside the classroom as a demonstration. An odd ricochet sent the nail exactly in the direction where the teacher had been standing prior to saying "For safety's sake, I'm going to move behind this thing" and stepping a few feet to the side.

I'd like to see at least one OMG PHOTOGRAPHER post on Metafilter that wasn't either 1) cloying hyper-processed over-saturated vignetted HDR Nutrasweet or 2) pictures of rusty things taken with a polaroid

Telling me I can't bring my religion into the public square is tantamount to bringing yours in first, and then denying me the same privilege
Secularism is totally a religion, amirite? It's like how how "all people are created equal" is really its own kind of prejudice because you're assuming that someone's equal rather than not. It's just a different kind of assumption! And the civil rights movement just brought in a new form of racism - the... [more]

If I give someone a tool set for Christmas and they use it to steal a car, should I have to pay back the original owner for the full cost of the vehicle? Certainly that would be in the interests of society at large.
For the record, though, this guy is most likely trying to pull a scam, and shame on him.

The Nutcracker Suite
Anecdote: A college professor of mine had two kids, got a vasectomy, decided that God wanted him to have more kids, had it reversed, and now has somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen. So there's at least one person who's had a reversal without a death or new wife, and a very successful reversal it seems.

There's nothing magic about subject distance. You can replicate the same apparent focal distance by just casting the light rays in the right direction. We have the technology.

It's disturbing to me just how common this one is. Makes no sense whatsoever, especially now that in my dream I'm working a full-time job and going to school 2,000 miles away.

More of the Same.
I just bought a replacement 30GB iPod, and three weeks later they've decided I can get the 80GB for the exact same price. [...] feels like I was robbed.
This has to be the dumbest sentiment in consumer electronics. What were you expecting to happen? No new iPods for the holiday season? They keep doing this and the timing is pretty transparent. If you can't wait a month or two for the new hotness to come out, you don't get to complain when it does and... [more]

A UI designer will tell you that your button needs to be 8px from the right edge of the dialog and right-aligned with some other thing, give you an icon for your toolbar, assign proper size and spacing to individual elements, check for appropriate use of fonts and colors, ensure that your elements are accessible, and generally make sure your interface looks and...
