MeFi Follow-Up: Joe Horn is Cleared of All Charges
What seems to be forgotten here is that burglary is not just a property crime. The intrusion into one's private space, the threat the burglars present to whomever might be home ("what if I had been here when they broke in?"), and the brazenness of the act and complete disregard for the sacrosanct nature of a person's dwelling, make burglary about as close to a crime of violence as a "mere property crime" can be.
I've been robbed.... [more]

Stinking of gin...
Having gone to class for about three weeks earlier this year while taking opiates (non-recreationally), I really don't see the point. I mean, I know all drugs are not the same, but if you're going to screw with your head, why bother going to class on those days?

Skins vs Shirts
Here is where I renew my call for t-shirts for tall and/or fat short and small people. (S or smaller, please). A reasonable extra charge is not a barrier.
XS for me, though I'd be willing to cut down an S.

SOOO? You hate them So Overly Obnoxiously Osentatiously (and) Obviously much? I'm not quite sure how to expand that acronym, even if it looks purdy on the page.

LOLMIDGETS
As one of the original complainers (and flaggers, and, oh yeah, a dwarf), I think LS has gone a bit overboard here. The post was arguably in bad taste; it got taken down; Smedleyman agreed that maybe it was a lapse in judgment. Those of us who work to change peoples' attitudes and ways of expressing themselves sometimes do latch on and not let go. In the end, though, I feel that it's more powerful to, as Wikipedia puts it, assume good faith. Everyone ends up happier that way.... [more]

And as far as "little people" being an undignified term, well, "big" and "little" are kiddy terms for "large" and "small;" I was called a "little man" all through elementary school; "little" is often used to describe small things that are also cute. I'm not saying I prefer midget. I'm not saying I'm blind to the idea that "big" is standard (though I think it's an overused and increasingly inaccurate trope in... [more]

I thought "dwarf" referred only to one of several types of small-statured people, and that LP was an umbrella term. No?
No. It used to be - and I think someone might've mentioned in passing this above - that midgets were short-statured but proportionate, and dwarfs were disproportionately short-statured. To be honest, I'd guess it had more to do with how close someone was to being "small, but normal-looking" than with any sort of... [more]

You: I think the biggest complain among Windows users is that Acrobat Reader sucks. As long as one has a decent connection, Preview on OS X and Evince on *nix (though not acroread) work fine, even with relatively large files. Sadly, there are some files that are so malformed they'll only work on Acrobat Reader/acroread.
Anyway, I think a lot of people only experience PDF through AR, and so they (like me, before I started using other OS' and PDF readers) assume that... [more]

Belittling me only dwarfs my concerns.
I also don't think it's cool to use the term dwarf or midget to disparage someone else, or to make fun of people who legitimately suffer from those conditions.
While I'd agree with the first half, it should be noted that most of us don't actually 'suffer' from dwarfism.
But seriously, I'm confused by the thread. Are you that sensitive about your height? I'd like to preemptively point out... [more]

I clicked that link not liking Comic Sans, but finding it - at most - only mildly annoying. I now loathe the 'font' with a hatred that shall never die.
Gave me a headache, it did.

I agree with Orrorin, and almost posted a MetaTalk to that effect before I noticed this. I'll probably write a Greasemonkey script to kill it in a few days (yeah, I know, overkill - I'm picky).

My roommate likes to say "use your words". It's practically a catch phrase for him. He told me he picked it up from his mom, who worked with mentally handicapped adults. I'm not sure that's entirely accurate, though, given the number of times I've seen it on Metafilter.

WTF, Wendell?
konolia: as a fellow Gmail user, let me just reiterate what has been said before - we get it. Gmail is wonderful, threaded inboxes are teh shiznit, blah blah blah. But (a) not everyone uses (or wants to use) Gmail for everything, nor should they have to, and (b) the fact that there's a workaround for asshole behavior doesn't mean it's not asshole behavior.
