Good food in Chicago?

Where are your favorite places to dine in Chicago? Romance is preferred, good food is a must, and I'd like to spend less than $100 for my wife and I.

Inserting exposure metadata into scanned photographs

Is it possible to (and how would you) add shutter speed, f-stop, ISO, lens, and camera metadata to scanned files saved in a .psd format?

Parking during snow in Chicago

How does Chicago's "No Parking if snow is over 2 inches" rule work out in practice? Are the blocks of cars parked on my street (Sheridan at 7600 N) all going to be towed overnight and tomorrow morning?

A simple PC audio recording set up

Using a no-frills but decent PC, what (cheapish) sound card and what software should I buy for my father so he can record his guitar playing and singing as well as do basic mixing and editing?

head humping cat

Our new, ten-month old adopted male (but fixed) cat does this (knead, get down on his haunches, and hump). Unlike the previous poster, however, he does this to our heads whenever we lay down. Is there any way to get him to stop? It's not the best way to wake up.

Spider ID?

What kind of spider is here, hanging out above my bed? I would guesstimate that from leg to leg the guy you see there is probably 1.5"-2". Is it the somewhat hard to identify brown recluse (who isn't even supposed to be native to Chicago)? Will I die? How best can I kill it from a distance? I am staying awake anxiously awaiting your answers!

FStop Magazine

Think that all photography has gone digital? Well, output probably has, but read a few of the detailed articles and interviews, each about an individual image, over at The FStop and you'll see that for professional photographers going digital, perhaps more than anything else, means unlimited control over all mediums of photography and unlimited combinations. Any Chicago landlords I should avoid?

Have any Chicago mefites had experience with Hunter Properties, Acorn Management, Lake Front Management, Lee Street Apartment Rentals, or Water Tower Realty? Praise is as welcome as criticism.

AFI Top 100

The American Film Institute decided the need for more money an update to their 1998 list of the 100 Greatest Movies was so pressing that they made a new list. Ebert (and friends) ask where's Fargo?. The IHT wonders why the past decade has only spawned four new, worthy movies. And, generally, no one seems super excited about it. (some links go to wikipedia to avoid registration on AFI's site).

wedding ceremony music for a soprano

What wedding songs (ceremony, not reception) would music lovers here suggest to be sung by a skilled, classically trained soprano accompanied by a not as skilled, works-for-a-small-church pianist?

Dear Meme

(Spoilers in most links). So an SNL digital short, Dear Sister spoofs the second season finale of the OC. Now the internets just don't know when to stop, with parodies (of the parody) playing on everything from the obvious like The Departed, LOST, Snatch, The Matrix, Reservoir Dogs, and Predator to the not-so-obvious like Lord of the Rings, Raging Bull, Monty Python, Duck Hunt (my favorite), Looney Toons, LazyTown, Smash Brothers, Office Space, and Bio-Ooze Super Soakers.

I forgot HTML, I forgot CSS

In making a gallery page for a website, what is the easiest way to have a scrolling area for clickable thumbnails that bring up a larger image, as well as some information about the image, in a table cell above? Specifics, examples, many self links, and my (mangled) code so far available inside.

Equally Yoked

How any have mefites in christian-atheist relationships and marriages fared? What advice do you have? What do you think about 2 Corinthians 6:14-15? I'm atheist and my fiancée is Christian. We both feel strongly about our beliefs, our love, and respect for one another.

Cheap but livable Chicago two bedroom

I'm moving to Chicago with my fiancé in August. We're looking for a two bedroom that we won't regret. Oh, and we're poor as hell. Is it even possible to find a two bedroom for less than $1,000? Inside is a list of more particular criteria.

GTA IV = GTA VI = 10-16-07

Grand Theft Auto IV (video, SFW despite age verification and Philip Glass) is coming. Even six months before its release, it is promoting rage and anger (...in NYC politicians). Fansite and Wikipedia article.

Autonomous Lights for Installation Art

I'm looking to do an art project that involves photographing a bunch of lights, 25-50 lights, spread throughout a small area of a pine forest. What would be the best, really cheap, way to make these "independent lights".

Turkey Cinemascope

Turkey Cinemascope is a series of dramatic photographs from director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Shot all across Turkey, he used them to record locations he was scouting for his films. Many are panoramic, some are epic, others intimate, and all are beautiful. (via and via)

Under what conditions are frozen lakes safe to be on? Is any noise coming from a lake bad or just earth shattering cracks nearby? Sorry of this seems silly

I assumed there weren't many of us (and maybe there aren't), but a recent AskMe made me wonder if anyone would be interested in a Bloomington, Indiana meet up?

Just, you know, checking.

"I'm having a stroke...wow, this is so cool."

"I didn't know I couldn't speak until I tried to speak out loud. I could still hear in my mind myself saying 'this is Jill, I need help'...so when I tried to speak I went wvur wvur wvur and so I sounded like a golden retriever."

In 1996 neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor had a rare kind of stroke (an AVM) that allowed her to maintain consciousness and analyze the effects of half her brain shutting down over the course of four hours. She was interviewed today (mp3) on Sound Medicine and discussed losing her language abilities and the ability to differentiate between herself and the outside world while gaining control over the rebuilding of her mind.

Automatic citations

Ottobib does what it sets out to do very well: take a list of ISBN numbers, the international standard book number system, and generates citations for you. It's as if it is automatically making bibliographies. (ha! get it!) Currently supporting the MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of Style citation formats.

2006 Leonids

When the Earth passes through the remains of the comet Tempel-Tuttle this coming weekend, the peak of the Leonid meteor shower this year will be this coming Friday night. This year, however, "astronomers are predicting an unusual outburst of meteor activity" of 100-600 meteors per hour between 11:45 PM and 1:33 AM EST on the night of Saturday, November 18th and long before the moon rises. While not as exciting as past years, it should be a great night for a meteor shower.

Best of the best movies lists?

So I'm a fan of movies. A little over a year ago I watched the top 100 of IMDB's top 250. I enjoyed almost all of them. I've since looked through many other lists, but I can't decide if any of them are worth working through (although I have seriously considered the writer's guild's top 100 screenplays). Are there any other lists out there that any of you have enjoyed? Are there any I should particularly avoid?
