Grand Theft Auto?
I don't mean to sound like an anal nerd, but I'm an anal nerd:
This is grand theft auto six in terms of the big, main games for consoles. This is the fourth of the 3D GTAs, and Rockstar just regard GTA3 as the first GTA.
So, IV, VI, it's all fair in my book.
(Or, in other words, I'm just cranky because it won't be out for PC for at least six more months).

Visually, here is how the map matches up with locations from The Wire.

delmoi, most of the photographers there shot either with digital backs on medium format cameras, or scanned 4x5 negatives. What's so wrong with utilizing every tool you have to make images that wouldn't otherwise be possible?
It is different, I'll agree with bonaldi, but it's not like these guys are using photoshop to skip a few steps or avoid difficult lighting situations, they're taking photography in new directions.

Errol Morris Clip Festival
There's something about The Thin Blue Line not winning an oscar because it couldn't even be considered because it was used in a court case instrumental to freeing an innocent man that's just plain awesome.
Unlike my sentence structure.
The Thin Blue Line is probably one of my favorite documentaries, right up there with Bus 174.

AFI Top 100
And this seems like a good chance to post this great list compiled by our own yankeefog.
(disclaimer: in response to my own ask question last year)

brundlefly, you've seen IMDB's top 100, surely? Their list, since it is based on user votes, is very heavily weight towards the kind of guy (or gal) that likes movies like The Thing. Or anything Tarantino. Or recent.

Campus map
It looks like the first building was right in the center of campus and the second was across the large field and in the lower right (ish) corner of this map.

I remember when I managed to get some kind of horrible pop up virus that made ______finder sites pop up night and day. Man, they have everything. Asian friend finder. Jewish. Christian. Black. Adult.
Everything. There's something wonderfully ironic about the same company pandering to Christians looking to get married as 50 year olds looking to fuck. Although, I guess, those groups aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.
Anyway.

"40 Years is not enough:" Update on Roger Ebert
Damn you mefites, all saying what I want to say better than I can and before I have the free time to do so.
Meaning, of course, the Ebert is awesome and I hope he can start writing soon. How else will I know what to think about the movies?

GTA IV = GTA VI = 10-16-07
I wish I had seen that write up about Rockstar from Wired, as it would have been a great link to add to the post.
My problem, see, is that I play all these games on the PC. So I'm looking at, what? Maybe 2009 for the game.
But San Andreas at 1600x1200 is dandy, let me tell you. And you can modify the statistics for every vehicle. Want a 10 ton bike that can turn on a dime and go 500 mph? Just modify a file...
I won't... [more]

Unintended consequences are exactly what the GTA games are all about for me, as well.
In San Andreas one day I was flying around in the jetpack and noticed that if anyone rear ended a cop car, the cop would get out and shoot the offending driver. So I would fly around in the jetpack, land in front of cop cars. They'd stop, get rear ended, get out, and shoot the driver behind them. Slightly amusing, yes, but one time the pedestrian killed the cop, so the cop's partner... [more]

My fiancé, Julie, curates the exhibit for which that map was created. Right now it, along with many other maps, is in the New York Hall of Science.

My fiancé wrote to me in an e-mail:
oOOo, we're on metafilter.
I work in the department at Indiana University who has worked in collaboration with these scientists and artists to create and display these Maps of Science. I co-curate this exhibit: http://scimaps.org/ which displays earlier versions of the Map of Science both as a wall mounted map and as an Illuminated Diagram display.

APOD
couldn't someone have done some photoshopping of the people rather than just superimposing the versions on top of each other?
Shots of lightning (and fireworks, for that matter) are usually 15 to 30 second exposures. While I'm sure that some of the crowd's blurriness is stitching things together, most of it comes from movement over the course of the exposure. Particularly blurry things, like people moving, barely show up and give you the feeling of... [more]

Sodium Azide.
The scary thing about dihydrogen monoxide is that we need it, but too much of it can kill you. And, because of technicological "progress" every household in America has easy access to it, in spite of how dangerous it is.
In all seriousness, how do people not immediately die whenever their airbags go off?
