MeFi post: Batbush? Bushbat? Bushman?
Trying very hard not to spoil....

Obviously human nature likes the idea that vigilante justice can get rid of all the "bad people" and make a better world for the "good people." That's why movies with that idea are so enthralling - they let us live out a fantasy that doesn't work in real life.

There's one known system of government which, in theory, works out better than Democracy - that of the Wise, Benevolent Dictator. It... [more]

Which means at least 6, by my understanding.

MeFi post: Carlos Is an Asian at Heart
I don't want to enter the racial discussion because the Malcolm Gladwell article near the top does a good job of showing what bullshit that is.

I don't want to enter the cultural discussion because I'm neither Latino nor Aisan, though what those kids were saying rings pretty true to my observed experience.

I do know that expectations from teachers makes a huge difference, though, from having benefitted from it greatly myself.... [more]

Yup, gonna take a good long while to get that one off of my mind grapes. More than anything I just felt sort of embarrassed for the woman, who seemed (to me at least) like she wasn't quite in on the "joke" or whatever it was supposed to be.

I'd also recommend adding tags for "thong" and "whathasbeenseencannotbeunseen."

MeFi post: There will also be a singing crocadile
arcanecrowbar - without knowing plot details, I'm kind of flying blind here, but given what we know of the original story, here's what I'm guessing they were trying for:

Maddy has to work her ass off for this spoilt rich debutante Charlotte. Some permutation of the "shooting the arrows" bit occurs and the foreign prince finds himself searching for his determined bride in New Orleans. Charlotte knows that the "chosen one" is Maddy, but enlists the... [more]

I really should've linked to this in the FPP, but for those who didn't follow the link in the Afrobella article, here's the (absolutely fascinating) piece by Disney's "Lone Negro," Floyd Norman.

Also, MeFi spellcheck doesn't think "should've" is a word. WTF?

As I've said roughly (way too many times)^2, I've been living this Summer in New Orleans, and the nature of my work takes me daily into the Lower 9th Ward, Gentilly, East New Orleans and Broadmoor, and all sorts of other neighborhoods still striving to put things back together against the best efforts of every incompetent government agency standing in their way... well now I've gotta go on a tangent. I'm sorry.

Earlier today I watched a newscast where the investigative... [more]

ARRGGGHHHH this sort of thing pisses me off!

I'm dealing with a lot of similar cases in NOLA right now, where Contractors can put a lien on someone's property just by getting a form notarized and then filing it with the council's office. It can be done in under an hour with no questions asked as to it's veracity. Getting the lien taken off, however, takes weeks or months and probably won't work, even if the lien is clearly fraudulent on it's face.... [more]

Awesome awesome awesome! 3 cheers for The CREAMY CENTER of Justice.

I laughed harder at the crash video than makes any sense. I think a lot of that has to do with the completely inappropriate music.

I don't know what it is, maybe I'm just this type of gamer, but I've watched it maybe a dozen times already and it loses absolutely nothing. Hey Flapjax! Yeah! You!

First of all... you always crack me up. glad to have you in the thread.

Secondly, if you go to the rhapsody site (which feels kind of like a necessary evil to me, though I can't explain why I feel like it must be evil somehow) and check out "Smelt" or "Hit a Guy with my Car" (which dovetails oddly well with this post from today) you might get more of the interaction with music... MeFi post: Old dangerous playground equipment.
Ahh... I oftentimes just generally hate the new parents of today. Not any of you guys, just... some of them... some of which are in my immediate family.

Still, at least my brother remembers the fun of "not using the playground as intended." A couple years ago I was visiting him, and we took his daughter (2 or 3 at the time) out to the playground, which of course was one of these ridiculous plastic monstrosities which should be thrown back into the fires of... TedW, I hear ya, and agree. Food needs to be safer and healthier, and ATVs, Farm Equipment, and Lawnmowers are honest-to-god safety concerns that any parent should realize don't fall under the same umbrella as letting your kids scrape their knees and, yes, occasionally break a bone so that they can learn to get over it, and learn about risks, rewards, triumphs, and all the other aspects of testing one's limits. I'm not saying that kids don't still get hurt (I think we can rest assured that... [more]

I don't work in anything requiring that much security, so I've always just used phrases and numbers which mean something to me, but which nobody else would imagine mean anything to me. For an example (one which I don't actually use, obviously), I love Donnie Darko. That's one of many, many movies that I love, though, so that shouldn't be too obvious to anu=yone trying to hack into whatever I'm doing. Still, though, I know that my favorite part of the movie, for some reason, is the bit about... [more]

I've often wondered much the same thing about art thieves, though. Every year or two we hear about another successful high-profile art theft (oftentimes involving The Scream) but I've never heard where these thieves are expecting to sell their goods. I mean, it's not like you can simply fence something like that, as it will be immediately identifiable as soon as it enters open market, so I guess I've just always assumed that there are contacts with people who want to buy the art for their own... You know what I think? I think if a man or woman wants to go against every ingrained and institutionalized prejudice in our armed forces, fighting for respect from each member of their platoon personally, having to proove themselves doubly of their valor and skill amongst ridicule which has nothing to do with their combat skills, all the while fighting their own government just to have the opportunity to fight and die for that same government, well then, that deserves a -... Not that I ever listened to it myself. I can't stand NPR.

I laughed, and I felt like it hit the mark. Than again, A hell of a lot more people will just see the cover of the New Yorker than buy it and read what's inside, and this displays many of the notions about Obama that the right-wing outlets are trying to set in stone. Adding another image of that to float into the corners of people subconscious will probably not be a good thing.
