I'll say that, personally, I don't mind them, and they're some of the best use of the site for discussion instead of content. I know that people have a problem with that, but at the same time, in the sea of periods in the discussion, you'll find a lot of links to great stuff that the OP wouldn't likely have found themselves.

I am not a psychiatrist. Thank god for that, as I'd probably go by the Afroblanco School in terms of prescriptions, and that's no way to make money as a doctor who's specialty is in writing out prescriptions.

I like all of these ideas, but I still think the mods do a fine job of weeding out the spammers. About a month or so ago a friend of mine who I'd been encouraging to join the site (he's a smart guy with a very funny writing style) made his first post. Jessamyn was worried about it, but looked over the favorites he'd gotten (which were mostly from me) memailed me to make sure he was legit, and let it stay up once I'd given her my assurances.

I never ran into the Free Hugs kids in New York, but on a weekend in Montreal, I ran into performance artist of such who didn't say a word, but just gave free hugs to whoever wanted them. Surprisingly not a lot of takers, but I sure as hell got mine. (Third Pic)

Dammit, I missed the D.C> meet-up at Nanny O'Briens (even after calling the location, somewhat) due to having plans in NY that weekend, and now tomorrow I'm way too busy. I'd like to say something about the favorites system.

I can understand why some people don't like it. This isn't fark, or pitchfork, or digg, and it's better than that. This isn't a competition for who can write the wittiest comment, or so forth. Also, I agree that favorites probably do contribute to people choosing to write in flame-thrower language more often than they would otherwise. Durn, I wondered about that, but assumed in the end that they'd be favorites that would be seen by no one but the favoriter. Otherwisethe only point would be in quelling some sort of mob-mentality towards favoriting what others have already favorited in order to jump on the bandwagon, and I have no reason to believe that it happening.
