Everything here is chatty
Well, I understand the deletion, but I saw this question to simply be, really, "How do I get my life in order," and as far as that goes, it might have been overly vague, but I trumpet the question for not being thrifty with the ambition. Also, alkidoka seems to have paid the $5 to ask this question, first and foremost, so, FWIW, here's my own answer:
Step One: find a job which can support you. Minimum wage might not get you out of your current living... [more]

Not About Tim Russert
I'll say that, personally, I don't mind them, and they're some of the best use of the site for discussion instead of content. I know that people have a problem with that, but at the same time, in the sea of periods in the discussion, you'll find a lot of links to great stuff that the OP wouldn't likely have found themselves.
Obit threads are far from my favorite thing on Metafilter, and whenever I hear about a shocking death, this is the first place I come, not because... [more]

I'm okay with honest opinions of the man, I'm just asking that issues about the quality of the post itself air themselves out here instead of there.

Answers, not opinions.
I am not a psychiatrist. Thank god for that, as I'd probably go by the Afroblanco School in terms of prescriptions, and that's no way to make money as a doctor who's specialty is in writing out prescriptions.
I know that there are cases in which children truly do have brain chemistry issues, and psychiatric drugs would be the best thing, but even in those cases, I'm a little wary simply because the kid is still developing, and who knows what may happen. I also refuse... [more]

Self-link/Spam fighting
I like all of these ideas, but I still think the mods do a fine job of weeding out the spammers. About a month or so ago a friend of mine who I'd been encouraging to join the site (he's a smart guy with a very funny writing style) made his first post. Jessamyn was worried about it, but looked over the favorites he'd gotten (which were mostly from me) memailed me to make sure he was legit, and let it stay up once I'd given her my assurances.
As helpful as heuristics can... [more]

allkindsoftime: Totally agree with you. I never ran into the Free Hugs kids in New York, but on a weekend in Montreal, I ran into performance artist of such who didn't say a word, but just gave free hugs to whoever wanted them. Surprisingly not a lot of takers, but I sure as hell got mine. (Third Pic)
Also, deletion reasons are some of the best entertainment on the site. Having had a few of my posts deleted in the past, I'm an avowed paranoid thread-babysitter.... [more]

Move along!
Dammit, I missed the D.C> meet-up at Nanny O'Briens (even after calling the location, somewhat) due to having plans in NY that weekend, and now tomorrow I'm way too busy. Also, athiest though I am, I still reserve some respect for the catholics who have enough force behind their belief to make it out for this, which is an historic occasion in any case. So my "gawking" would be fully academic and intellectual and respectful, I assure you.
Still wish I could... [more]

Indeed. Close the thread and delete it if it feels to hinky, for sure. As Afroblanco said, it was something we started as a joke, put on projects, it jumped to the front page from there, and then got us on NPR, with another featured segment on something else that was also recently on the blue. And (until it didn't work out) the interview was going to be with a long-time Mefite using his Mefite name. I thought that was enough to make it metafilter-related. Again, if it's truly problematic,... [more]

Are snarky one-liners being deleted in the Blue?
Just to say it - this is why I love the MeFi moderation mechanics. I myself have had several posts deleted. After being bummed about it for a few minutes, I understood, and was fine with it.
Also, the other day I had a first comment in a thread, which very easily could've been interpreted as noise or JamesTaylor-ist, as someone recently put it, but wasn't meant that way. It wasn't deleted, because (presumably) the mods know the site and the contexts well enough.... [more]

Scrump Goes For Broke
Okay wow. I authored the James Taylor post, and I have to agree with psmealy - the thread was pretty tame, I thought. I appreciate Dave Faris and Pastabagel for their comments, but I expected much more snark, and most of what it got was people debating his merit, pretty respectfully for the most part. I expected much worse, and that might be the problem.
I think MeFi is far from broken, and spend more time on it recently than ever before (I'm a 38ker, so that might... [more]

I'd like to say something about the favorites system.
I can understand why some people don't like it. This isn't fark, or pitchfork, or digg, and it's better than that. This isn't a competition for who can write the wittiest comment, or so forth. Also, I agree that favorites probably do contribute to people choosing to write in flame-thrower language more often than they would otherwise. It can be MeFi's own version of "clapter," as was explained by Tina... [more]

Durn, I wondered about that, but assumed in the end that they'd be favorites that would be seen by no one but the favoriter. Otherwisethe only point would be in quelling some sort of mob-mentality towards favoriting what others have already favorited in order to jump on the bandwagon, and I have no reason to believe that it happening.

My first post was awful. My subsequent ones haven't been much better. My post last night got deleted as a double, and we'll see what happens when I come out swinging again tonight.
The point is, don't worry about it. If it is newsfilter, provide enough links to give adequate context and to view things from all sides. Don't over-link to wiki - if you can reasonably assume that anyone interested would know the basics of who/what you're talking about, youcan do better... [more]

Important feature proposal for FPP process
Should we maybe compile a short list of sites that we could suggest new members maybe avoid linking to? The Onion would be on there, obviously, maybe Cracked now, as well (not calling jbickers a new user, by any means). I also remember a few months ago when someone posted a McSweeney's link and you could practically hear the comical needle-scratching-off-the-record sound effect.
Just to help new users avoid some fraction of the snark their first few times out, should... [more]

Truth be told, I really like wendell's idea.
