Ask post: Help Poodus find a University...
Hey, I'm an Aggie, but if he wants to have a real focus on music, A&M isn't the school for him. The music major here has only been available for a few years, and the program is very much in its infancy. However, Texas A&M's engineering school is top notch, so he could certainly come here and major in engineering with a minor in music or something, and come out alright.

A lot of Death Cab for Cutie falls in this category. I Was A Kaleidoscope, Crooked Teeth, Title and Registration, and Photobooth are all good examples of upbeat songs with lyrics about regret or failing relationships.

Ask post: All four paws on the floor, please!
For the jumping, something that works even better than the knee-jerk reaction (which can be regarded as play) is to take a step towards them right as they go to jump up on you, throwing them off balance. Dogs hate that. A few times of that really cut down on my dog's jumping. As for the general pawing, though, I'm afraid I don't have much to offer.

Ask post: Wherefore art thou runner's high?
I get the runner's high, but it's a lot like you describe: I'm achy, exhausted, shaky, and damn it, it feels good. There's this amazing sense of accomplishment and of realization after a good run that just puts me in an absolutely wonderful mood. However, I have to run myself to where I've pushed my limits to achieve this feeling, and anymore, that means running 4 to 5 miles at a 7 to 8 minute pace. You can't just jog a few miles and expect results. Seriously, though, it you really push yourself,... [more]

Ask post: Hire Me!
There's not really any need to do anything fancy. At the clinic I work at, we just have local trainers bring in special coupons for us to distribute to the customers. The vets themselves could care less about referring clients to a trainer, so it's usually our receptionist who ends up giving people the hookup. Coupons with really good discounts will get handed out regardless of whether you have a reputation at the clinic, so that's all that's needed. Gimmicks will just be a waste of the staff's... [more]

Ask post: Help with cat that sheds ashy particles
I nth fleas. The water test mentioned above is a good way to determine if this is the case. If it is fleas, you are likely to see no sign of them on her, as cats are well known for grooming adult fleas off and eating them, which is, by the way, an excellent way to get tapeworms. So keep an eye out for shed tapeworm segments around the cat's rear and in fresh stool (they will look like wriggly rice). You can pick up some topical flea treatment from the vet, probably either Frontline, Advantage,... [more]

Ask post: Mild sedative for Pet dog
You can safely give a dog Benadryl, which knocks many of them out the same way it will people. The dosage is 1mg per pound of dog, so if you have a 25 lb dog, one normal tablet ought to do it. Just wrap it in some bread and feed it to your dog. Alternatively, you can get the children's liquid Benadryl and put it on his food. You should be able do this twice a day for long periods of time with no ill effect. My own dog gets around the clock Benadryl during flea season due to flea allergies. As to... [more]

Ask post: Should I go to emerg? Should I report this doctor?
Wait, if the Dr. was off by ten days because she's not a native, is it possible that you have different date formats? Because is she was used to DD-MM and saw 12-22, or vice versa, and wasn't paying attention, you could see where the problem would possibly arise from. Just pointing out that this Dr. is perhaps not, in fact, insane. So, though that doesn't help with the decision to go to the ER, it does possibly help your "WTF?" question.

What I did when I moved my two large fish (a plecostomus and a black ghost knife, both around 8"), I bought two of those styrofoam beer coolers from the grocery store, and used those as shipping containers, filled about a third of the way with tank water. Since they come with lids, I put a few holes in those and we were good to go. Mind you, these fish were moving 160 miles. The nice thing about the coolers is that they're soft enough you don't have to worry about the fish getting thrown... [more]

Okay, I'm seeing a lot of anecdotes involving dogs with entirely different conditions than yours. I work at a vet clinic. (Disclaimer: IANAV, just a vet tech). I have a secret for you: there person who brings in their cat every year, and who has a cat that weighs appropriately, is a rare bird. We have people bring in cats all the time with ages in the double digits who never even got their kitten series of shots. We usually just run a Feline Leukemia test, bring them up to date, and forget about it. And morbidly obese cats are a dime a dozen.

As a cat-allergic cat owner (who's aspiring to be a vet!), acclimation definitely occurs, but you have to watch out. Don't sweat the dechlorination so much. The main things is that you match water temperature from the sink when returning water, and just dose the whole tank with a dechlorinator.

Sorry, I'm not being clear. This movie was one that had a fantastical setting that didn't even matter to the plot. As in, you could have done away completely with the fantasy aspects of the plot and still had the movie. AI, for example, needs the sci-fi setting to even exist. Ask post: Help for a Goldfish Killer?
I just wanted to jump in and recommend that you DO NOT get an undergravel filter. They seem like a great filter when you first start to use them, but unless you are gravel-vacuuming your tank weekly, debris and other detrius tends to get sucked underneath the filter, where it gets trapped and decays over time, slowly worsening your water quality until your tank "crashes", usually accompanied by rampant fishy death. And then you have to dismantle your tank to clean out under the filter,... [more]

Ask post: how can I make my cat like my wife?
Arqa beat me to a lot of what I wanted to say. Let me just reiterate this point: if your wife has a dog, and has never had a cat before, she simply may be displaying a lot of body language that the cat finds offensive, but which dogs react well to. Cats respond well to a lot of body language that a dog owner would never think of using, such as making brief eye contact and blinking very deliberately at a cat and then waiting for a responding eye blink or head turn before approaching, and apart... Make sure these are friendly, well-handled llamas that are used to being handled by people. My uncle, who already had llamas, was given one for free once and we soon discovered the reason why. The only way to lay hands on the beast was to corner it with several people and throw a rope over it, a thoroughly traumatizing experience for all involved, and nearly every memory I have of that llama ends with me being kicked or spat on. I was about to recommend Dwarf Gouramis, but it seems chrispy108 beat me to it. They're pretty, and come in powder blue and "flame" red varieties. Lots of personality for a fish, and are happy with freeze-dried bloodworms.

Some of the males can get a little aggressive, so you do have to watch out for that, but just getting one male and two females, or even three females (and they are usually sold by gender) would easily prevent that. They are also fine singly.
