Shut Em Down?
While I can understand Nas' reaction to the increasingly embarrassing gaffes and arrogance of Jesse Jackson, I'd sure hope that Nas can get a wee more articulate about his concerns. I mean, did you listen to that spiel of his? "I'm here now! We don't need Jesse, I'm here, I got this..." Huh? Last time I looked, Nas was rockin' the mic, not engaged in policy debates and decisions, not involved in government or NGO policy... So, we... [more]

Nas' argument is that would Jackson or Sharpton have said anything Dylan or another respected artist was to create an album with such a title?
Uh, yeah. Yeah. I reckon if Dylan or any other "respected artist" had released a record called "Nigger", then Jackson and Sharpton and many, many others would've had quite a bit to say about that. Yup, I reckon so.

Thanks for those links, cashman.
Anyone taking on Fox is doing something right. But it is too bad Nas can't show a little more respect to Civil Rights era trailblazer Jackson, even if he has become a bit of an embarrassment.

Wow, carsonb, great, great, great find, this is a treasure trove! And CDBPDX, thanks so much for your Herculean efforts. And, welcome to MetaFilter! That's a helluva hard-to-remember username you've chosen there, though!

Just wanna say one more time, CDBPDX, this is fantastic. You should get some sort of internet award. Thank you so much.
Lots of Vernon Dalhart here, which is A-OK with me. Tons of other great stuff.
One unexpected surprise: Booker T and the MGs. I didn't know Stax ever made 78s. Or was that one from a 45?

Hey, like, no problay-mo, man! I was just wondering, was all, if maybe Stax, for some curious reason, released a 78!

Ah, those Dutch, bless their politically correct little hearts. Sure, they might go a little too far every once in a while, jailing cartoonists and all, but they make a damn good poffertje. Mmmmmm!!.

And All The Time You Could Feel Your Heart Beating Along The Wounds
Oh, and did you know he wrote a James Bond film?
No, I didn't, and that's really interesting! That movie holds a special place in my heart: I saw it the year it came out, as a 10-year-old, with my dad. It was a fairly racy movie to take a 10-year-old to (especially in 1967 Alabama) and looking back, I think it was a bit of a rite of passage. My pop was letting me grow up a little. Of course, the "Bond girls" were a real eye-opener, and that... [more]

He's had great luck in the movies, with Henson doing "The Witches" and Danny DiVito's "Matilda"
Not to mention Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." He had bad luck, though, with the first movie version (1971) of that one though. He hated it, apparently insisting that the name, at least, be changed to "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".... [more]

The equation of African-Americans and Irish...
Aside from the excellent point made by dyoneo in the comment/quote just above, it also bears pointing out that no one said anything about African-Americans, until anotherpanacea invoked them in his comment. Prejudices against black people, surprisingly enough, actually predate the United States of America.

Ah, upon exploring your other links, I see that yes, he exists. I'm not terribly crazy about his stuff based on these links, but anyway, I always like to see folks who are trying to do something a little different, following their own instincts. Thanks for the post.

It's a good mashup of storytelling, standup, and unobtrusive background music.
Now see, that's kinda what put me off a bit: the unobtrusiveness, the background-ness of the music. It's just like a guy telling a story in his living room, with the stereo going in the background. I'd like to see a little more interaction with the words and music happening in something like this. As it is, I just kinda feel like, why... [more]

China Colonizing Africa With Dire Consequences for Africans
That Mail article is a wee bit alarmist, I daresay. Bit of an anti-China axe to grind there, Andrew Malone?
This line from the article is perhaps telling:
Despite Britain's commendable colonial legacy of a network of roads, railways and schools, the British are now being shunned.!
Surprised he didn't somehow slip the word "benevolent" into that sentence.

I'm pretty ignorant on things African, but one thing you can say for colonizers, at least they built infrastructure.
The murder, brutality and injustices foisted upon the colonized, the wholesale looting of the continent's natural resources, and the arbitrary division into nation states that is at the root of so many African conflicts today seems a rather high price to pay for some highways and railway lines, in my opinion. But this argument is trotted... [more]
