Ask post: Also, north africa's really far from South Africa isn't it?
I really enjoyed africa cafe, where you get to try food from all over Africa.

Kirstenbosch Gardens were amazing; we climbed up the gorge from there up Table Mountain and went down via the cable car.

If you feel like exploring outside of Cape Town, the Stellenbosch area is beautiful. Moyo offered a great meal and gorgeous setting.

There was a lot of great art around; a unique style of diorama was popular when we were... [more]

Ask post: What's going on with my email?
I'd be really surprised if it were random. Both of the small companies are ones that I've either bought software from, or *know* that I'm on their "updates" mailing list.

atomly: Yeah, United responded to my complaint with a "Change your email address" suggestion. Nice, eh?

Ask post: It is not necessary to accept everything as true, one must only accept it as necessary.
I had a similar thing happen with Cingular. When they "merged" with AT&T, I had to transfer my AT&T line to Cingular in order to change plans. This led to them closing my former AT&T account and opening a Cingular one.

Fast forward a year or so, and I get a call from the Collection Company of America (how's that for a name?) and they claim I owe Cingular $100. When I call Cingular about it, they claim I owe them nothing. Finally, I called the... [more]

That's interesting, phearlez. So how do you know when you're dealing with a collection agency vs. a junk debt buyer?

Honestly, my debt was valid, if absolutely not my fault, but from the first interaction with them to the last, it felt really really dodgy. The first thing that happened was I received calls from unlisted numbers with voicemail messages such as, "This is regarding an important business matter. It is important that you return this call *immediately*,... [more]

Ask post: Was I struck by lightning?
The ground probably had some moisture from light rain earlier in the day, but it wasn't very wet.

What happened to the person who was struck?

Ask post: I want a geeky sewing machine
Thanks, everyone.

Woah, I didn't realize we were talking about an expense on that scale...

Sounds like I may be getting in over my head with an embroiderer, and should get one of those reliable general purpose sewing machines, and just make friends with someone who has an embroidering machine for my underpants.

I"ll check out the mentioned brands.

Thanks for the advice!

Ask post: GPS ready Digital SLR Cameras
I second hades's advice. I also use a GPS and software (in my case, the WWMX Location Stamper) to sync the GPX track data into the EXIF data of the images.

This also allows me to move between any number of cameras - a SLR for when I'm doing more intense shooting, and a point-and-shoot for snapshots, travel, etc.

As for cameras, Canon's 5D is getting rave reviews as the first affordable full-frame sensor DSLR. It's priced to be *almost* consumer... [more]

Ask post: A group voice mail service with mobile alerts?
Thought of something else: What if you got one of those free online voicemail accounts. Search around and find one of those. Give the # to all band members, and when someone has an important message instruct them to call the free VM # and leave a message. Instruct members to check for messages once a day (they can do it from any phone with a PIN number, make sure no one actually DELETES the messages) for important updates.

We used to have something... [more]

Ask post: No Healthcare. Bad idea?
I second, third, fourth, fifth the catastrophic plan idea. Not having anything is a very very very very bad idea.

It sounds like you're interested in self-insuring, which is actually a very viable option. There are many really good doctors who have opted to step out of the insurance system and accept payment cash-in-hand, which is often at much cheaper rates than what your doctor usually charges the insurance companies. Even your current doctor may bump his rates down... [more]

Phearlex- I didn't know that, but it's really interesting to know. Is that true even if you're switching insurance agencies?

Ask post: Help me keep the hospital's thugs from breaking my kneecaps over $100 they seem to have lost.
I've been going through some issues with a collection company trying to collect on fraudulent debt. (They claim I owe Cingular $185 and called my on my Cingular phone to tell me so.) The advice I've gotten so far seems to be that *nothing* can ever be resolved over the phone when it comes to collection agencies - especially the dodgier ones.

I'd start by writing a formal dispute of the debt, and sending it certified mail with return receipt requested.... [more]

Weston,

I don't believe so. Failing to dispute the debt doesn't necessarily make you liable for it. See item (c) under that first link.

You'll probably essentially be beginning the whole process again, this time in writing, but don't worry that you've waited too long. If you end up on the phone with them again, let them know you're going to be disputing it by certified mail, according to FDCPA regulations. You can (and probably should) ask... [more]
