Wouldn't life without the possibility of parole be much more painful than the death penalty? I think so.

Train in Vain
At 15, I took this exact train ride with my then 81-year-old but very spry grandmother. All went well until we hit Omaha, where a barge hit a bridge and we had to wait for six hours for the Coast Guard (in Nebraska!) to say it was OK to cross. I still recall the slow anticipation as we crossed, and how I ran from the front of the train to the back so that I would be on all the cars as they passed over the bridge.
We hit Chicago and the conductor decided that a woman and... [more]

Here he stands. He could not do otherwise. God help him.
Can I be the first to say it: Get your own blog. Issues of Lutheran hermeneutics and theology are really not best served by an amateur forum. I e-mailed Bishop Hanson from the ELCA about this, so if he responds or his PR guy responds, I'll get him to comment in the thread. But, in all seriousness, get your own blog.

t's a moot point to talk about Luther without talking about the modern theology of the Luther-derived Protestant churches such as Congregational, Reform Church, Lutheran, and Calvinist (up to debate - but basically).
You must recall that Luther like many preachers of his time and since, embraced Jews but grew impatient by their lack of conversion. It must be taken then it's place and time in history. For to call Luther an anti-Semite would serve only to forget that... [more]

Truly Brutal
I used to check my e-mail there and then go to Steak Night at the Wetherspoon's in the mall next door.

Are you a witch, or are you a fairy, or are you the wife of myself, Michael Cleary?
Thank God people no longer believe in this horseshit anymore!
When I was returning from Croyden after receiving my second visa in 2005, I spent the train back to Birmingham in a serendipitous conversation with the now Bishop of York, John Sentamu, who was coming back from London. He was extremely angry at the reporting of the exorcism of that little girl, because the Mail on Sunday and the Sun had intimated to possibility that over 1,000 children had... [more]

You know, sometimes Metafilter feels more like a great big race to be the first one to point out someone else's glaring mistake than it does a community blog about the best of the web.
And I hate chocolate too. Get over it.

Totally outrageous!!!
Ah, 1985. It was the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Christmas party at the Esprit headquarters in San Francisco. The president of the company had let his daughter buy all the presents. My 'gifts'? A blister pack of giant plastic black ants and a box of Cindi Lauper trading cards.

Keeping it in "The Family"...
Jeff's an interesting guy. I think it's unfortunate how he has really taken over The Revealer to sell his book. I worry that he's just trying to be Peter Manseau, but he hasn't really got such an interesting or compelling personal story.

I also heard the interview and was unimpressed because it was plainly clear that Diane Rehm had again let someone else read the book and then worked off of notes to do the interview.

Once all this was said and done, I was curious about the effect this book might have had on the Presidential race if Hillary had chosen to stay in it -- would this book cause her to lose so-called feminist votes or gain cachet among the Religious Right?
That is the dumbest question I have ever seen in my whole entire life.

Best review of worst book ever
The worst book? Catcher in the Rye. Read it when I was 22. I just completely missed the boat. I kept thinking, "this guy's a total dickhead."

P.o.B: I'm a journalist, and I read a ton, averaging about a book a week. I subscribe to London Review of Books and the Chronicle of Higher Education. It's not that I'm not literate, it's just that my high school teachers had us reading My Antonia and Like Water for Chocolate rather than anything Catcher in the Rye.

Would you like obesity with that?
The strange thing is that Bisphenol A is already banned in Europe, so when they make baby bottles in China for the EU market, they already use plastic without it. Ironic that we already had the choice not to have it, but that we have lower standards.

My dad went to college in StL and had a basement apartment which flooded every spring, so he never had any problem with where to put his lit cigarettes.
