Sorbet. It's the best thing going, and easy as all get out.

(I know it's not pie or cobbler, but it's just as tasty and counts as dessert, and you'll be happy that you made it)

Ask post: What is the best scooter for me?
30 miles round-trip is a long way on a scooter. Which is why I'm going to recommend a Kymco People. They've got bigger wheels, and ride much better (and safer) than the smaller-wheeled scooters. There's the People S 125, the People 150, and a few others.

Don't be discouraged by the high price tag - at a dealer you can find them much cheaper. Someone I know who has one got the previous year's model for $1900 out the door.

Also, make sure... [more]

Uh, what? That's not possible. A#=B♭, all the time. They are the same note, period.

Not true. Well, on a piano, maybe. On a stringed, unfretted instrument however, how a note gets played has a lot to do with where it is in the movement of the melodic line.

For food: Primanti Bros, in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. Also, the "O," in Oakland.

For places, there's The Warhol Museum and the Mattress Factory. Also, you should ride the Duquesne Incline.

You should know that Fallingwater is about 90 minutes southeast of Pittsburgh - it would add significantly to the trip. Also, they advise that you book your tour at least 2 weeks ahead of time during the summer.

Ask post: Too tall for an Altima?
Two data points - my brother is tall, and drove an Altima for several years. He loved it. I'm taller than him, and I drive a Hyundai Elantra. I guess it's too small for me, but it doesn't really bother me at all.

Deals come and go - driving an uncomfortable car sucks for a long time. I'd say wait on something that you feel good in.

Ask post: snappy situation
In DC, just about everyone sells decent 120. There's Penn Camera, L'Imagerie in Bethesda, Uphoto in Beltsville, and one other place that I can't think of right now. My personal favorites are Velvia 100 (bright sun), Neopan 400 (general use), and Delta 3200 (for when it's dark).

As for processing, you can take it to any of those places. Prices will be outrageous (like $6/roll), even if all you're doing is having them process and give you the uncut roll.... [more]

Damn, I wish I was in NYC. I'd do it for you tomorrow.

Were I you, I'd call WYNC, and ask for the engineering department. They'll either be able to do it for you (at a fairly reasonable price), or possibly, one of their engineers will be interested in doing it on the side.

Ask post: How to get the Adobe Audition cursor to stay still?
Did you mean "The cursor always returns to where it started?" That's what happens in Audition for me, and is what I'd consider to be "proper" editor behavior. If you start playback at 1:32.483 and run until 1:55.293, when you hit stop, it'll return to 1:32.483. What you want, though is for the cursor to stay at 1:55.293?

In Pro Tools, it's called "Timeline insertion after playback." That might help you google what you're looking for, but... [more]

Yeah, I get what you're saying - it's been a while since I couldn't tell by the waveform, but I can see how it would be frustrating. Personally, I use a similar method to gjc - basically, I always have my left pinky above shift, to extend/shrink the selected region, and I've found that using the scroll wheel for zoom is key. Basically -

1. Find the inpoint. Place the cursor. Zoom out.
2. Play the clip until the outpoint. Stop playback, hold shift, and... [more]

Ask post: How can I fix my Compaq Presario v5000 screen?
I'll speak from my experience with a few Apple LCDs - it's probably the data cable for the LCD. The inverter cable provides the voltage necessary for the panel, while the data cable carries the information to be drawn on the screen. I think this is what you need to replace - and it's possible that this might be what you're looking for. I'd check the part # of your panel against what's listed in the description for that item, and go from there.... [more]

Ask post: Beard, or no beard for my wedding?
Beard. Absolutely beard.

You're getting the wedding haircut, I assume? Either as part of it, or before it, go to a barbershop - preferably one maintained by a sole elderly man. He will give you the best shaving/beard trim you've ever had in your life, and you'll look exceedingly dapper.

And oh man, now that I look at the pictures on your blog, I'm even more resolute in my support for the beard.

Ask post: Brought a car in for service during warranty, and it wasn't fixed. Do they still have to fix it later?
This is a question I'd ask on the VWVortex Forums - there's a lot of useful info (especially about widespread issues) on those boards. There's also the Newbeetle forums, specific to the modern Beetle. I can't speak to the quality of the forums, though.

I'd say that you should take it back and be extremely forceful with the management. If they don't provide you with the solution you need, move up the customer service ladder. I wouldn't expect to get far, though, since... [more]

Ask post: Why does tilt-shift photography make things look tiny?
The ultra-short depth of field tricks the eye into thinking that the shot was taken with a macro lens, or close-up filters. If you look at actual shots of model train sets and the like, you'll notice a similarly short DOF.

My thought is that this is a learned response - it's not like people are born knowing that short DOF = a certain type of lens.

Ask post: Is NPR practicing moral hazard or am I freerider?
Okay, here's the thing.

Stations don't want this. At least at my station, the budget is split roughly 50/50 (I work far from the numbers department, so the details are fuzzy) between listener donations and underwriting (the little "ads.") This will of course vary wildly between stations, but so do costs - as has been mentioned above, costs (at least for NPR programming) are proportional to listenership.

The reason stations don't want... [more]

Just find a you-pull-it, drop $50 on two new seats (cloth, this time), and swap them out. Keep the old ones in your garage, or sell them, or do whatever you want with them. I'm sure there's plenty of '98 Camrys out there that are the right color.

Ask post: Preventative Maintenance on a 14" G4 iBook
I'd say go the preventative route - just replace the cables. It does involve a fairly gruesome tear-down of the ibook, but if you're out of warranty, why the heck not? There's two cables that feed the LCD - the LVDS (low voltage data signal), and the power cable for the inverter. They both run from somewhere on the board (depending on model/features of ibook) up through one of the hinges to the screen. If you could do it yourself, it'd cost you about $30 and maybe 2 hours, if you've never... [more]

The one thing you may want to watch out for is that instead of salt, those Ener-G pretzel rings have sesame seeds - I'm not sure they'll be exactly right for that salty/sweet chocolate-covered pretzel taste. To me they tasted (saltwise) somewhere between the average pretzel and a saltless one.

Personally, I'd go a little bit further, and do something like this - rather than building a computer into the old UPS, just run a pass-through electrical, and hide the money in there. I'd guess that it's much less likely to get stolen than a computer.

Umm, but yeah. Should be safe.

Ask post: How can I loop a sample continuously on an iPod?
Yeah, totally possible. Random sounds like white noise, applause, rain, etc, are really easy to edit seamlessly because of their randomness. So here's how I'd do it -

Make like 8-10 samples of white noise, each between maybe 30 and 60s long. Make a playlist out of them. You'll have to make sure that they're set for gapless playback. Then, when you listen to the playlist, set the Nano to shuffle/repeat only that playlist. That way you won't get used to the length... [more]

1. The Wicked cheap Behringer mixers are crap. They've got the noisiest preamps I've ever used in anything, period. The few times I've had to use them, I've gotten a better signal by reversing my gain structure - keeping the preamp very low and pushing the fader as hard as I could. You don't want one.

Arms and Back
Arms back, and just barely pop the knees
3/4 strokes

Okay, well - There's other DVD case generating software out there, right? I figure there's got to be. If you've gone crazy looking, then this will help.

1. Figure out what DPI your printer is printing at. It looks like it goes up to 1200dpi for black and white stuff. That's probably overkill. 300dpi is pretty darn sharp.

Ask post: Which is the best speaker for my bass amp?
It depends on what you're doing, and where you're playing.

If you're playing in situations where you're not going through the PA, get the 15". It's the only way you'll get any serious thump. My one beef (as an audio professional) with 15"s is that they bleed a hell of a lot worse than 10"s, and if there's no gate on the kick mic, they take that mic over. It's a huge pain in the ass. However, if the bass isn't getting mic'ed, then the kick might not be... [more]

This is fairly common (if not standard procedure) in Astrophotography. It's easily done in photoshop, and I imagine that it could be done in The Gimp as well.

For basic averaging, the first image remains as-is. The second image is layered on top, with an opacity of 50%. The third image gets an opacity of 33%. Continue for n images, giving each image an opacity of 1/x, where x= the position of the image in the stack.

Okay, here's the thing. Mics aren't meant to play nice with guitar pedals. You've got this nice, balanced signal, which you're forcibly unbalancing, and then plugging into a jack that's expecting a balanced (yet still 1/4") input. That's just no good.

Do yourself a favor - avoid this entirely. Does your mixer have an FX send/return? Plug the mic into the mixer, then use the send (which could be balanced) to go to the pedal, and then bring it back to a return.... [more]
