Where Musicians Come to Play
it's crazy that npr is just now doing national syndication on this show. it's pretty fantastic, and it has been for oh, about 25 years now.
I'll try and clear up what this means - as has been pointed out, PRI has been distributing Mountain Stage forever. It's been available to any station, and has been (as is every other nationally syndicated public radio show) distributed over NPR's satellite network - it's the only one there is, so NPR... [more]

GHM, you said nigh-impossible (re getting npr music mp3s). Does that mean there's a way to do it? Can you drop us poor souls a hint as to how???
Well, some of the older shows used to be fairly easy to download, even if there wasn't a link. They used a fairly obvious file naming scheme, and it was pretty easy to guess at what the file name for a particular show would be. If you dig around in the archives, I think you'll see what I mean.... [more]

I'm going to point out here that I'm apparently dumb, and NPR has moved a lot of the concert downloads to the All Songs Considered Concert podcast. Hopefully this will be the case with the Mountain Stage shows as well, either as part of the ASC-C podcast, or instilling new life into the Mountain Stage podcast.

You know, I was pretty skeptical because of the strange artifacts on the reversed video, but now that I've listened to DNG's mp3s (through studio speakers, no less), I'm pretty sure what we're all hearing is the natural reverb in the room.
She's pretty far from the mic, and it's a pretty live-sounding room, and I think hearing the room reflections first messes with whatever our brain uses to determine how many people are singing (or speaking, or whatever). If she were... [more]

I can see how the "awesomebar" is going to cause problems, especially with us nerdier types who tend to remember URLs, and half-type them before tab-completing. However, knowing how a more average computer user (my wife, or my mother, for example) uses the taskbar makes me think that it's generally going to be a good thing™.

Hmm... Let's hope that a couple of major newspapers, like maybe the San Fransisco Chronicle or the Seattle Post-Intelligencer pick it up.

god hates math, you've linked, of course, to the 2 news storys I linked in the FPP, and it's probably worth noting here that those 2 articles were the only news coverage I could find at time of posting, all across the whole big fat throbbing internet. I think that pretty much makes readery's point, right there.

TMI LOL
Used to be, in the world of audio recording, it was considered poor form to gasp for air into the microphone, and engineers, with pained looks on their faces, would "duck" the really egregious inhalations. Then came Tori Amos, and they started turning them UP. It became a fad, and I fucking hate it, because it's all I can hear when they do that.

What is wrong with the phase in that song? Is that caused by using a freeware stereo expander or something?
No, one of the channels is just reversed. I was listening to it through the board in my control room, and the channel was set for mono. It was a little freaky. There's one or two things that aren't panned dead center, but almost the entire song gets canceled out.

Is there a relationship between those two bands, other than that they're both from Canada?
Well, they both have a rotating cast of members that usually numbers around a dozen.
I wish I'd gotten to see them in person, but I fear that they are/were one of those bands where there's a noticeable difference between their studio sessions and their live performances.

$75,000? That's absurd. I've got to wonder how much of that is going towards the "other related costs." She could record at Tiny Telephone (the best analog studio in the US) for $550/day.
That said, I definitely support this kind of effort - I can think of two dozen or so bands that I would immediately give money to, were they to try this kind of patronage. As in any investment, though, I'd prefer to have more transparency - I've got to know my money is... [more]

She actually outlines in slightly more detail on the FAQ page how she's spending the money -

Yeah, absolutely. I don't care for her as an artist, but I think she's got the business model of being a (relatively) small artist down. There was an interesting piece on her a few weeks ago on All Things Considered.
