MeTa post: I've got a bunch of good mixes just waiting to be made.
Alright - any interested parties should send an email to mefiswap[at](my username without the spaces).com. Alternatively, an email to the account listed in my profile with the subject "mefiswap2008" should do nicely. Please include your username, real name, and real address. I'll send all pertinent information to the email address you use, so make sure it's one you check on a regular basis.

I'm thinking three weeks for the signup period, and another three... [more]

Wait, you were "Please Enjoy" ?!

Nah, I was in swapset Gavotte. By "everyone," I meant the other folk in my swapset.

Some people prefer keep their username from being linked to their actual name, whether for personal or professional reasons. It would be desirable if whoever sets it up this time were to endeavor to keep whatever page that was from being indexed by the google.

Yeah, I'm actually one of those people, and I'm aware of the 2006 flap with the potential exposure of information. My plan to get around that is to avoid the web, mostly. I'll make the swapsets,... [more]

Oh man, I'd love a digital MefiSwap.

*pushes glasses up onto nose*

mmmmmmm, I believe that you'll find the Compact Disc to already be a digital medium. With 44,100 samples per second (each with 16 bits of dynamic range!), the compact disc has excellent fidelity, wrapped in a wonderfully portable package!

but is there anything more I ought to know before I go tossing my hat in?

No, that pretty much covers it. The goal is to make a mix and send it out to everyone else in the group, thus ensuring that everyone gets a lot of new music.

on preview, Jessamyn beat me to it, with a lot more panache.

Alright, so I'm going to set some dates:

April 14th - May 5th - Signup period!
May 5th - May 26th - Make your mixes!
May 26th - June 2nd - Send your mixes!

I think that's a fairly reasonable timeline.

Also, a note about the theme swapsets - these are totally optional. If there are >=5 interested in a double-disc swapset, I'll make it. If not, no dice. The same goes for a cassette swapset, or... [more]

Roll Truck Roll, I'm not sure if I've got the power to, but I'll grant you forgiveness for your transgressions, as long as you truly have the resolve for repentance. I'd love to have you as a participant, and I'm sure your former swapset members would love to randomly get some discs in the mail as well.

We've got a pretty good group so - about 50 people have signed up so far. There are however, a good number of people (11 if I count right) who have expressed interest... [more]

I'm going to come down against the disc full of mp3s. It's how things have been done in the past, and I think that's been with good reason. For me, the swap is just as much about the art of the mix (I know, I that term is embarrassing) as much as it is the music that comes on those discs. Dropping a bunch of MP3s on a disc and sending it along seems much more like filesharing, and much less like sharing music, at least to me. And I know, that's a pretty slim distinction, but I think it's an... [more]

As an opt-in, people can put mp3s of their mix CDs on yousendit or on their own webspaces.

Well, sure. I mean, I couldn't stop people from doing that anyway. I don't think it needs to be a sanctioned part of the process, though. There's usually a followup thread where people post their favorite mixes, among other things. That would be a good place for posting links to mixes.

Alright, for anyone following this thread in Recent Activity, we're getting close to the May 5th deadline. Last call for registrations!
posted to MetaTalk by god hates math at 12:23 PM on May 3, 2008
Alright, registration is officially over.

I'll be making up the swapsets and sending them out over the next few days. If you emailed me and didn't get any response, or confirmation, let me know.

Alright, finally, all the swapsets are out.

The last two weeks have been totally insane for me, I'm really sorry for the delay in getting the sets out.

For the record, the swapset names are just pulled from an alphabetical list of names of record labels. They are by no means any type of guideline for the content of your mixes.

And again, any concerns, if I screwed up any addresses (likely) or anything else, just email/MeFimail me.

I'm on my way to the Post Office now (only 40 minutes before it closes!), and I'll say only this - Cortex's flickr page has never been so useful as last night, when I was looking for good cover art.

Omiewise, you obviously need a copy of this. After that, the only hard part is teaching your parrot how to turn it over without scratching it.

From my own swapset, I have only received Slybevel's discs. I'm going to guess, Omie, that you've received mine and Slybevel's? Good to hear that at least 2 more are coming down line.

As for all the organization, it was my pleasure. Despite a lot of crap going on in real life, everything went well.... [more]

I just got Omie's and carson's yesterday - they both look excellent, and Omiewise gets serious points for presentation.

I haven't gotten yours either, Omiewise. They're in my car right now, so it's hard to be sure, but I think I've gotten Slybevel's, pompomtom's, and carsonb's mixes. No word at all from Earbucket or Zeph.

Ahh, yes. That's right!

It's in a stack (I'm embarassed to say), waiting to be listened to. I'm clearly a dirty liar, and this comment should be stricken from the record. Except for that part about Earbucket and Zeph.

I think we've safely passed the point at which any more mixes will be made/sent, and at which point certain individuals can safely be called deadbeats.

As for reporting said deadbeats, I'd suggest replying-all to the swapset email I sent out. That'll allow me to easily make a dataset of the slackers, and allow for a vigorous defense/apology.

While I'm all for public shaming in general, I think I'm going to pass on it this time around - I'll... [more]

I'm definitely in, both for tracking and mixing.

We did that for the previous project, though I can't remember any specific remixes that came of it.

I did two, only one of which I ever posted. I should probably post the other.

Anybody else coming over to MeTa to leave snarky, useless comments, because they know it's the only place that shit won't get deleted?

I'd be all over this if I were in town, but sadly, I'm visiting my parents in the Rust Belt. By the time Obama gets up here, I'll be back down around the Capital City. And hell, there's probably no tickets left by now anyway.

Last comment, I swear. What the hell does this mean?

My first guess would be, "Fat dudes, lady cops," which I think describes certain parts of our fair state very well (I'm looking at you, western Maryland).

I don't speak latin, though, so no promises.

WAAHHHH THIS MEETUP IS NOT IN DC!!@!

Anyway. Piratz is .61 miles from the District line. Super-close to the Red line, as well as the 70, F, J, Q, S, Y and Z buses. We'll have the next DC Meetup on H street NE for those of you that won't^H^H^H^H can't make the trip.

So yeah, count me in, +1. Anyone that wants to slide over to Quarry House after, say the word. Beer + Tater Tots = happy ghm.

Would it make more sense to have every administrative brainstorming discussion we ever conduct take place in a metatalk thread for public dissection? It would be a good thing to panic people with un- and half-baked ideas that, after some thinking, we realize should never see the light of day?

I really don't like the consumer mentality reflected in the sentiment, but to each his own.

Eh? I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. Let me clarify my stance a little -

I like MeTa. It's nice to have a place where the rules are a little more relaxed. Here's the thing, though - MeTa is the only place where I've noticed a degradation in signal/noise. I think that's probably been true across the board, but because the... [more]

The Bush administration is a full-scale disaster and yet Bush still gets 30-35% approval in polls. WTF, people? Is a third of the US douchetarded?

No, it's more like 50%. The bottom 15% or so are just so dumb they can't even answer the poll correctly.

Is it properly parsed (Big Girl's) Blouse or Big (Girl's Blouse)?

I parsed it "Big (Girl's Blouse)."

This is why parenthetical phrases should be acceptable in English. If the linguists get to use them to parse their sentences, so should we.

Though I've got to admit, since becoming a MeFi regular, I've started to use small like I used to use parentheses.

MeTa post: Would that be a MMOMPG?
I'm in. I'll also second tehloki's suggestion - I think it's the only real way to make this work.

I can add vocals, Wurlitzer, banjo, bells, synth parts, and of course, guitar or bass.

Goodnews, I'd also love a huge zip of all the tracks (even as a160kb/s mp3s), so I can mix my own version. I'm an audio engineer by trade, so this shit is fun for me.
We should also have a remix competition once this is all done.

posted to MetaTalk by god hates math at 7:45 AM on October 14, 2007
Perhaps the whole big collection of tracks could be given out to multiple MeFi Musicers, whoever's interested, so lots of different mixes'n'remixes could happen?

That would be very exciting - I'd probably come up with 5 or 6 different versions. And then there's the remixes to think about.

Also, some of you sluts roll over and 5 star anything that shows up at your doorstep in an easy-to-open package.

Or, you know, some of us are close-minded and usually don't queue up stupid shit that we don't expect to like. For example, I just watched 12 Monkeys for the first time. That particular turd got 2 stars. Worse than what I normally watch, but better than, say, Gigli.

That's what I get for taking chances, I guess.

Ahh, didn't quite make that connection. (this is what happens when you browse the web half-assedly from work) I hadn't seen the response, either.

I wish they would rescind their policy, and someone would get arrested, though - I'd like to see this get hashed out in the courts, so there'd be more clarity around the issue. This kind of public/private partnership limbo is really creepy, and I don't like it one bit.

MeTa post: Squishies gone missin
It took until today for someone to register "metatalk" as a username?

Either I'm greatly overestimating the number of sockpuppets, or we're lacking in the "obvious creativity" department.

alternate explanation: cortex is a sneaky bastard who is hoarding all the awesome usernames for himself. (you'd better have coughed up $5 for that one, smart guy!)
posted to MetaTalk by god hates math at 9:25 AM on July 2, 2007
A user number is assigned at the time the username is assigned, not at time of payment.

So basically, I should be registering any and all usernames that I could ever be interested in (Hitler's Moustache, here I come!). When the time comes, I'll cough up $5, and sockpuppet away! Hell, I should write a script to scrape boingboing, kottke, and 4chan and automagically register any meme-related name goodness.
