Music post: In A Room
Thanks, Karlos. Always appreciate your feedback on my contributions.

Corduroy, yes it is. Sweet riff isn't it? As far as classic shoegaze, I feel that the term has quite suffered from misuse. I'm a big fan of many late-80's and early 90's British groups that, despite their diversity, get lumped together under that term because the industry requires (new) labels to confound listeners and maintain its relevance. That said, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Suede, etc.... [more]

Music post: (Elizabeth) On the Bathroom Floor [Eels Cover]
Enjoyed the cover. Love that piano sound and yeah, it's a great song.

I'd guess that much of it is about his sister's death but E had no shortage of tragedy in his life around that time. If you enjoy his music you should check out the BBC documentary about his relationship with his father, Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives.

Music post: Lost Time
Thanks for the kind words, alligatorman. The EP was recorded by some very talented friends of mine who also played on the tracks. I played guitars and sang on the tracks, keyboards, bass, and drums were done by friends.

Thanks for listening, uncleozzy. This mix is definitely uneven, just a rough mix from Pro Tools. Mixing, mastering, and all that other post-production goodness is still to come. I think that when the tracks are mixed properly they'll sound very different -- for example, you'll hear that wonderful piano playing in the bridge brought out more. Same thing with the vocals which badly need compression, etc.

If there's interest I can post the lyrics as well.

That's a very nice thing to say, cortex! Thanks!

Lyrics:

You meet me at the airport
Smile painted on your face
Your touch is like a stranger's
Cold and stiff in our embrace

And wouldn't it be nice
If we realized
We could make up all this lost time

You call me by the old name
No one calls me anymore
The rain hits... [more]

Music post: 'Til We're Dead
Thanks, guys. I know the mix could use some tweaking but overall I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. Here's lyrics in case you can't decipher them:

Telephones are ringing in the room
Televisions are blinking at you
Televangelists screaming
Telepathics dreaming
Telling everyone in the world what to do

Disbarred lawyers are threatening to sue
Dysfunctional families

Awesome interpretation dude. Really enjoying this! It's really a very weird feeling to hear someone else play something you wrote. This is great!

Music post: Tonight Hit the Bong With Me
Very funny. And well produced! A friend and I recorded a very sloppy, drunken version of this after watching Steve Martin in The Jerk.

Music post: My Fire
Thought it was amazing the first time I heard it last year. Your musical ability and imagination has grown by leaps and bounds, Preston.

Music post: Place to Be (Nick Drake)
Thanks all for the kind words. I posted a better mix of the song here if you're interested in downloading it. The original can be found on Drake's great, great album Pink Moon, a record I would recommend everyone spend some time with. My cover doesn't even compare to the breathtaking original.

Music post: Tower Song
If anyone likes this enough to download it, I'd recommend downloading from here because I added that wonderful second guitar melody to the original today.

Music post: Whatever (Folk Song in C)
Thanks all for the nice words. After hearing it again after a day I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't re-take the doubled-up vocals one octave lower that are in the chorus. Some awful dissonance there! Ah well, next time I'll pay more attention. Funny how quickly listening fatigue sets in and you lose all perspective on the recording.

Music post: Tecumseh Valley
Thanks for the kind words, sleepy pete. I'm of the mind that even if I don't like my singing or playing, if I keep doing it for twenty years at least I'll keep improving. If you check out my other songs you'll notice that most of my musical experience involves synthesizers and samplers and my only real skill is in arranging. It's fun to record anyway.

Have you seen the Townes movie Be Here to Love Me yet? I recently ordered it because I've been... [more]

Bah, that "yet" doesn't belong in the title or link, obviously. Heh. I didn't have my coffee this morning.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments! I'll definitely be posting some of my original tunes in the future.

chococat: Thank you for such a nice compliment. It's so hard for me to understand -- I think everyone hates the sound of their own voice. Must be designed in by evolution. But golly...awful nice of you to say.
