Ask post: New York for a 17-year-old
Friday night there's a free No Age show at South Street Seaport. I love that venue since as a resident it gives me an excuse to see a beautiful yet touristy part of town.

If I wasn't going to Philly, I'd 100% be at the Highline Saturday night for the Fuck Yeah Fest Tour 2008. All Ages show, but it's $17. Matt & Kim and Team Robespierre are both awesome.

Sunday afternoon, you have the McCarren Pool show with the Breeders and Matt & Kim.... [more]

Ask post: Take me out to the ball game?
3. They can't advance on a foul ball. This is probably most of the instances you are seeing them slink back to the base. They can't advance on a pop up until after the ball is either caught or hits the ground.

You'll see a runner take a lead a few yards off the base in case it's a ground ball in order to to give them more time to get to the next base. If it pops up, they'll retreat back to the base to "tag up", and wait until it's either caught, missed... [more]

Ask post: If I think it's a scam, it is a scam -right?
100% Scam. Do not deal with anyone who lists an apt and for whatever reason -no matter how plausible- is not currently in the area. I had a friend who moved to NYC recently and a good 40% of the listings she sought were pulling the same scam.

Ask post: Where are the discounted games?
Gamestop usually has a used copy of most new games within 2-4 weeks. If you can wait that long, it'll save you $5 right away. If you subscribe to Gamestop's weekly email, they regularly have coupons for 25% off used games (week to week it varies system from DS or PS3 or 360). Thus I got Burnout Paradise "like new" three weeks after its release for $40.

Ask post: . . . but a good cigar is a smoke.
Cigars are great, but cigars stink. I always wear something I don't mind getting smokey. Cigar ashes tend not to smell, but the butts absolutely reek. You don't want to leave them around. You'll have to find the right size you like to smoke - robusto, corona, etc. The all have their own peculiarities. Some will be brief, and some are major time investments.

Find a drink you prefer to compliment it (for me, an IPA usually is nice). It augments the experience... [more]

Ask post: Girls don't want to have fun?
It may be related to this post on Slate's XX Factor, namely that:

1. More women date with an eye toward serious partnerships.
2. Men marry without seeing it as necessarily monogamous.

If you presume that lesbians tend to be more monogamous, then they aren't looking to hook up at bars as much.

Ask post: There's something strange in the neighborhood...
Ghosts are immensely afraid of terriers. Cats too. So get a pet. Terriers and cats. Why? I can't explain. I think it's the hair but ghosts aren't known to be instilled with much logic. If a ghost *does* dare to turn off your TV (why ghosts LOVE to do this, I'll never figure out) know that you have a companion to keep you safe.

Ask post: Want to grill; don't want to get burned
Your landlord probably doesn't allow this. Mine doesn't. But, as long as you are 10 feet clear from any combustible material, NOT using propane, and have access to water via a hose or sixteen (16) quart pail of water or a fire extinguisher, it doesn't look to be illegal.

I've been to a few large rooftop parties with bbq's and a several where the NYPD showed up to "keep the peace." While they gave warnings for noise, they didn't mention the bbq (charcoal,... [more]

Ask post: How can I increase my chances at an 800 SAT Math?
Bah! to those who say it's a meaningless number.

In 11th grade, my goal was to get a 100% on the NYS Chemistry Regents. So I prepped like I never had before, and I felt ready. Testing time: I complete the entire exam with only three slight qualms answers. I recheck them and feel 100% confident on two (even correcting one answer). The third, however was either A or C, depending on how I interpreted what the question was asking. Something to do with salt and a... [more]

Ask post: Gender Neutral Term for Aunt/Uncle
While I agree the term "cousin" best describes the familial relationship in gender neutral terms, calling her "Cousin" or "Cousin Marie" as a proper name is a little weak. I've also heard a child call an older friend of the family (not even a relative) as "Ti-ti". It's a nice nickname and certainly can refer to Tio-Tia in Italian.

The easy answer has already been said: BB guns. If dad allows it, and you have the space, set up a few pop cans in a field (with a rock on top so the don'f fly off with only one hit).

You can also take the to go-karts, batting cages, mini golf or paintball.

Eventually, though, she got a little too wasted and started hanging all over everybody.

That's what alcohol does, as you may know. The fact that she was flirty with you sober reveals what she really wanted. So in her mind: you go out on a date; hit it off; flirt at a party; and then you completely flake out on her birthday without even telling her first. It's yours. Appropriation without recognition happens every minute of every day. Is it cool? No. You're in the right, but it's really not worth fighting over. A crappy picture of a set list? I surprised you even emailed them in the first place.

I would also refrain from firing off more emails to the band members or managers. It comes off as tattle taling. They are not going to care about a STOLEN!!! picture of a set list I'm all for intellectual property... [more]

Ask post: How to improve my southern speakin' skillz
I had a southern friend say "I tell you what" whenever he was agreeing with me and it threw me off. In the north, it's a preamble to actually disclosing information.

North: "I only have $1 left." "I tell you what: Give me that $5 and I'll give you two candy bars instead of one."

South: "It's freezing out tonight!" "I tell you what." (silence) ... "Well... what?!"

Ask post: Did road runner have once shin splints?
Shoes will help a little but aren't the golden solution. A more "confident" turnover and how your heel hits the pavement will help. It's not a speed issue, but how your feet are hitting the pavement; in my experience running slower gave me worse shin splints.

I've found that the SURFACE helps a ton, if you're able to find it. Run on dirt and they won't be as much a problem, but pavement/sidewalk/concrete will kill your shins.... [more]

Check to make sure you can use the Eurail on those high speed trains. Check also to see how much the "reservation" is. There may be $40 in just the reservation fee alone for high speed service.

Target has their games behind glass in my neighborhood, and very limited selection. I'll look for deals in the circulars, (Toys R Rus is pretty good for that), but otherwise Gamestop has a wide selection and solid stock. Primarily, however, I buy off of Craigslist. I usually don't mind waiting. That said, I'll probably pre-order GTA IV at Gamestop a few days beforehand if I don't see a deal at one of the chain stores.

That makes no sense. By not living together and spending all his time on music he would be neglectful. I believe "The Biggest Loser" does percentage of weight loss from starting weight:

(330-238)/339 = 28% weight loss
You would win if you reached your target, but you would also win if your target was a "modest" 277 lbs. They don't bother with "targets", just maximizing total % of weight loss.

The way you are proposing the bet is % of reaching target. So if he reached his... [more]

As per wikipedia, there is debate which early Julian leap years are right, and there is much confusion between 12 BC and 12 AD. Many propose that 4 AD is not included. All seem to suggest there are either 14 or 15 leap years between 45 BC and 12 AD.
