Ask post: Does my yoga mat match my yoga pants?
Seconding The Shala. Barbara sings and plays the harmonium at the start of class and it is nirvana-ly. I think she may be away much this summer, however the other teachers are also excellent (and the classes less crowded).

Ask post: Nobody told me when I went on antidepressants that my brain might asplode.
hmmm...I am currently tapering off 150mg dose of the evil effexor. It is a big drag: fatigue, nausea, headaches. I'm doing the take-out-3-additional granules a day thing.

I got the brain zaps and spinning nausea (which were at times quite debilitating) whenever I was more than a couple of hours late on taking the med, but only then (short half-life as mentioned upthread). Be sure you take them at same time everyday...

That being said, if I knew... [more]

Ask post: Where can I find an inexpensive turntable and amplifier?
If you just want to listen to records, no fuss no muss, check out ebay for the old school Califone turntable set-ups. For under 60$ you can have a somewhat portable all-in-one and let the vinyl spin!

Ask post: Midwife in DFW?
Thanks so much!! This is my first time to be an auntie and I live far away. BTW her doctor told her that the local demand didn't support Austin or California style births!! I will pass all this info along. Once again, Y'all are wonderful!!

Ask post: Help me get away from the computer!
Bake bread. Rewire found lamps. Pick up a musical instrument (and play it). Do some yoga. Make papier mache sculptures. Really, make anything! Good luck! I struggle with similar issues and it IS a struggle because change means getting out of established patterns and, boy, are we resistant.

Ask post: Ironing plastic bags together...is this toxic?
woops, thanks Meteroid Baby for pointing out the warning in there (read the tutorial ages ago).

I was doing this with open windows and a fan in the summer. Quebec winter however does not lend itself to an open window, and that really is what prompted my question.

Ask post: My Dog, The Obsessive Licker
My dog (5 yr old husky-something) is also a compulsive licker. Before I recognized the signs, she would lick the fur off her lower leg/paw area before I realized what was happening. For her, it does seem to be boredom. Distracting her with a ball or a toy or a romp whenever I see it begin has mostly done the trick. good luck!

Ask post: What to see in Fort Worth in a week?
from my sister, the one who decided to stay in Texas:

I've lived in Fort Worth for about 10 years now. I
grew up in Arlington which is right between Fort Worth
and Dallas. In a week, I would try to show someone as
much of the following as possible...

The Cultural District which includes:
The Modern, Amon Carter, and Kimball Art Museums, Will
Rogers Coliseum, which has a huge Stock Show... [more]

(my sister says: I could go on and on about Fort Worth...)

Some follow-ups: Ol South Pancake House is dirty and dank and filled with gap-toothed waitresses, but it IS Fort Worth history. It's the great equalizer of the classes. You'll see rich lawyers, drag queens, cowboys, groups dressed in obnoxious boe-down attire, etc. It's worth at least making note of its location. Ihop is Ihop - a chain. Not a BAD thing but not as much color. Plus, there's a nice shopping... [more]

Ask post: What CMS should I implement in a simple website for a friend?
I use drupal for the big ones, but for little sites, I love the simplicity and usability of textpattern (I've never used wordpress...)

Ask post: Advice/opinions on CRMs?
Depending on what the client's needs are and if you are a drupal/open source fan, check out CiviCRM. This CRM stands for "Constituent Relationship Management"

Ask post: anti-winter!
Make friends with Old Man Winter. I grew up in Texas and never really knew the guy...until moving to NY/NJ and now Montreal. Winter gives you a peek at things you don't get to see at any other time. Walk a dog or yourself (bundled appropropriately, of course). Look at how people and animals create paths, where they take shortcuts. And then another snow creates a new surface and it begins again. Also, check out where the birds nest in the now bare trees. So much to see! Like interesting ice... [more]

Ask post: One week in India--what to do?
Get out of Delhi, pronto. If you are in the slightest bit interested in wildlife or birds there is an amazing Bird Sanctuary (Keoladeo Ghana National Park) not far from the Taj Mahal. It is really worth the trip.
And if it is at all feasible, get thee to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. A beautiful colorful crazy place. Namaste!... [more]
