What's in a (handmade crafts shop) name?
It doesn't sound like you're set on "Noun StoreSynonym," so what about "Lastname and Lastname?" It doesn't even matter which last names-- "Yourlastname and Madeupname," "Madeupname and Othermadeupname," "Yourlastname and Mothersmaiden," and so forth. Even the same name twice. If you're worried about it being too pretentious, pick a somewhat ridiculous name; avoid puns if you don't want it to be too cute; use them if you do, etc.... [more]

Good Historic books
John Steinbeck - Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, and Grapes of Wrath are pre-1945. Cannery Row, at least, is fairly light. YMMV with the other two.

Hiring graphic novel artist to create portrait as gift?
Check with these guys (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comicart-l/); the question probably comes up a lot there. I'm sure they'd be able to help you with recommendations and contact info, especially if you know some specific artists, or general styles she likes.
If you end up with a professional, you should probably shoot for Christmas, or even next year's birthday. In the comics world, commissions are usually priced by how many figures are in the drawing, then... [more]

ISO Satan's fiddler.
(Not fiddles) John Cale's viola on Venus in Furs (from the first Velvet Underground album, but he kills it solo live), and George Crumb's Black Angels.

Who sounds like a recent Tom Waits?
Nthing Cave, Beefheart, Cohen, and has anyone mentioned Serge Gainsbourg yet? But really, there probably aren't any sound-alikes. On the weird noises front you might try No Neck Blues Band; they're pretty hit-or-miss for me. On the cabaret/Weill side, check out The Tiger Lillies, Shannon Wright (esp. Dyed in the Wool and Over the Sun), and maybe Marianne Faithfull. (My way-out-there suggestion: The Oblivians Play 9 Songs With Mr. Quintron)

if you're goin' my way...
I haven't read it in a while, but does anyone else think Jim Dodge's Stone Junction would count, or is it more of a picaresque? Come to think of it, maybe Not Fade Away, also by Dodge (I've not read it, but I think it's a road novel).
It violates your criteria, but I really want to throw out Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. I think it's more what you're looking for than American Gods, at least.

Purchasing fine art photographs
Here's a Strummer (seven from the right) by Piper Ferguson. And it's not Johnny Cash, but she has a killer photograph of Merle Haggard wading through a swamp, on the second portfolio page.
There's also Gered Mankowitz, but I didn't see Strummer or Cash on his list of artists.... [more]
