MeFi post: Hitmen For Destiny
Bizarre. I loved the sequence where the guy kept trying to get Annette to fall in love with him, though. It reminded me of the Republican party this election cycle.

Part of me wants to see Palin inflate her throat sac and hiss "Maybe this will make you love me."

MeFi post: The Iron Heel
The Call of the Wild is taught in elementary school. This one, not so much. Kind of like how history books always talk about The Jungle's influence on food safety without mentioning its embrace of socialism.

Ask post: Good label maker to buy?
Nthing Brother PT65. My wife has one for her photo kit on the go, and we have a PT1400 at the house that can label onto metal tape for weatherproof installation, etc.

TZ tapes are available at Costco in "bulk" (4 cartridges) for good prices.

MeTa post: (Possibly) deleted posts and books that are too long for their own good.
Like the OP, I remembered this post and wanted to find it after I finished the book. It took a while for me to find the thread because the only tags attached to the post were physics, philosophy and books... nothing about nealstephenson, anathem, etc.

I realize there are a lot of problems with allowing non-OP members to add tags to a post (batshitinsane editorializing, for instance). But tags overall have been a blessing, especially with site search being so hit-or-miss.... [more]

MeFi post: wartime paratrooper dummies and decoys
In college, our student television station stunt dummy was named Jasper. Jasper got the stuffing beat out of him on a regular basis.

He never once complained, although I could have sworn I once heard him muttering something about how "this country needs another Vietnam."

MeFi post: Horror for the casual insomniac
If I could figure out a way to get paid to do what this man does... well, my friends, I would then attain true heaven on Earth.

You know, there are people who are paid to watch and listen to DVDs and Blu-rays for quality assurance purposes. It's so fun to watch them come in as bright young film-school grads chatting to each other about dramatic dyads. My colleagues and I snicker as they discuss Robert McKee and J.J. Abrams. Six months later, the new... [more]

MeFi post: The $1.4 Trillion Question
By 1996, China amassed its first $100 billion in foreign assets, mainly held in U.S. dollars. (China considers these holdings a state secret, so all numbers come from analyses by outside experts.)

Key economic figures being state secrets troubles me greatly.
posted to MetaFilter by infinitewindow at 12:46 PM on September 30, 2008
Actually, yes, the loss of M3 publishing—an economic indicator that was covered in high school!—is also troubling. However, to me "not publishing the M3" doesn't have the national security implications for the U.S. that "foreign currency holdings are state secrets" does.

MeFi post: Is Obama Another Dukakis?
This is not a fantastic post. But the idea does have merit. McCain should have lost, and instead through Obama's relative silence the GOP candidate has been given a chance to reinvent himself.

Why did I hear McCain railing against the bailout yesterday on NPR and not Obama?

Ask post: How to shave when "closeness" isn't an issue?
Transitioning from disposable to electric left me with acne for two weeks or so. My electric razor still irritates patches of my neck from time to time. No cream or gel involved, though, and I have shaved in my car on the way to work at stoplights.

If you've got to run or enter combat, it's more efficient for you to maneuver with less body mass. That's why animals poop and pee when faced with a fight or flight situation.

Ask post: Are my allergies just an excuse not to clean?
When you dust, use the "microfiber" cloths. You can get all the dust without using any chemicals. When they're dirty, just pop 'em in the washer and line-dry them (DO NOT machine dry them, this melts the microfiber). No dusting spray = no allergies.

Don't use dryer sheet-type fabric softeners. They just put wax on your clothes which eventually destroys their ability to absorb moisture. Instead, use distilled white vinegar in your washer as fabric softener. If... [more]

Ask post: How detailed is your mental imagery / mental visualization?
When I read novels and short stories, I see and hear movies... in widescreen, with shots and camera angles. "Vividness" and subjective mental experiences manifest themselves as detail, either as abstracted close-ups or complicated tracking shots. I very vividly recall that my daydreams in elementary school were like this as well.

In college, I was the head engineer for the student television station. About two months into the job, I was cleaning up a room that... [more]
