iWant, but should iBuy?
I have the same intel as Dec One and heeeraldo, so I'm probably going to wait till September...and yes, doorsfan, I am trying to hold out until I can get 64 or 128 GB for the price of the current 32GB, or just to get a 32 cheaper. I'm starting to put movies on my hard drive and would love to store some on an iPod to take with me, but the small storage size right now seems prohibitive.
So September it is, I guess. I have $500 of "found money" (a side job that I... [more]

A Box Set Box for My Blank DVD Cases?
junesix, since the seasons are 4 discs a piece, I was either going to go for the 4 or 8-disc holder to hold one or two seasons at a time. What I was hoping for was the cardboard box to make it look like a legitimate display. But thanks for confirming that my alternative is a good idea.
Any other suggestions, hive mind?

Help me find the right laptop bag
My search for a guy-friendly messenger bag for DSLRs led me to this, which wasn't sufficient for my camera needs but looks like it could work well for your use, save for the inability to turn into a backpack. It fit my laptop quite well.

Is Your Excellency aware of the 2 for 1 special on pineapples today?
The archbishop of our diocese came to my high school one time, and I remember my principal (a priest) telling us, "fellas, if you can't remember what his title is, just call him 'Father.' He's still a priest."
I took that advice through to when I met another archbishop after college, and when we were introduced, I called him "Father." He didn't seem to have a problem.
But both those archbishops seemed pretty cool. It might... [more]

Subtitles in letterbox area
It makes sense with the rise of widescreen monitors, because there's no standard of how much room is available in the letterboxing.
Also, unless I am getting my facts mixed up, it's because the movie is displayed in the aspect ratio it's shot in. They don't shoot in 1:1 (or 4:3), so the letterboxing isn't actually part of the image. So they can't really write onto it.
But I agree. It would be a great thing to take advantage of.

Should I stay or should I go?
I'm in a similar situation, even though my company - a university - isn't going through the process of being acquired. I have a boss whose focus intersects only slightly with my own, and he's actually very literally missing from the office two months of the year, leaving me to run with the ball on my own. It's tough to grow in my career without his guidance, which I cherish.
Were I in your situation, which sounds a little less supervised than mine, I might consider... [more]

Guy-Friendly Messenger-Style Camera/Laptop Bag?
On preview: I realize that paulfreeman's question is similar, but I don't need to worry about how much I need to carry around for extended periods. This is more of a day-to-day bag.

Tomorrowful - that's nice, and I'll put it on the short list, but padded compartments would be better, as would a lower price tag.

Thanks to some of your suggestions, I found some sites that reviewed a bunch of bags and chose the Domke F-802 Reporter's Satchel. I'll report back with results if it arrives and I get to use it before the thread closes.

Turns out the Domke wasn't all that great, and I am going to return it. But I picked up a Tamrac Adventure Messenger 5, since the Superlight 46 seems to be unavailable, and I'm loving it so far.

Vanity URLS or backslashed directories?
If the backslashed URL isn't too long (and it doesn't have to be with redirects), you should try to stick to that.
In the case of recent viral advertising, the vanity URL seems popular, but I've always thought that, for brand purposes, it's best to stick within the company domain. That's the war I'm currently waging within my own "company" (a university).

It's not you, it's your salary expectations.
It sounds like a polite "out." The last time I applied for a job (which I didn't wind up taking), they asked for a "salary requirement" and I asked them for more than $5K more than they wound up offering to pay me. But they still offered at the lower salary, because I guess they wanted me enough to take the chance.
This seems to be a case of them seeing your potential other salary from the other offer, realizing they can't match it, and finding a... [more]

Yeah, I think World Famous has it on the nose here...there's no way of telling without knowing who the hypothetical future girlfriend is and how you're going to be able to justify it to her. But there's a likelihood that it'll be something that the hypothetical new girl frowns upon.

Indie songs in TV commercials
Apple is bonkers about indie music. Consider "New Soul" by Yael Naim for the current Macbook Air commercial and "What I'm Looking For" by Brendan Benson for the iPod touch.
The latter was also used by Sears for a catalog commercial.

Teen girl audition song needed!
How is singing from the show inappropriate unless asked? I've auditioned for community shows all my life, and singing from the show (for Todd, sing the Broadway version, not the movie (which is awesome in its own right)) is the best way to show that you can handle the specific kind of music.
If you don't want to sing from Todd, pick another Sondheim song.

I guess I've always had prior clearnace, then, because I've almost always found that singing from the show was an accepted and useful behavior. Example: when I tried out for Ragtime last summer, the audition sheet said something from the show or another by its authors would be preferred (but not required). It's not relevant here, but future readers might want to know...
In your case I'd still recommend looking for something from Sondheim's library - for sheer wordiness,... [more]

Unwanted mail
I don't know if there's anything you can do to STOP it, per se, but we get random pieces of mail at our house (that we've lived in for 5 years) for former residents. We write "incorrect address" on the envelope and put it back in the outgoing mail. The post office generally returns to sender or forwards to the correct address.

For what it's worth, a lot of people frown on hotlinking to their images, and may install plugins to stop you from doing so. I, for one, have been trying to block hotlinking because it messes with my page hit stats.

Malaise, I'd love to do it your way, but our CSS is so messed up it's not funny. The default text size for ul tags, for instance, is tiny. I don't have control over it, so I work around it when I can by pasting the text from Word into Dreamweaver, which keeps the style formatting but drops all the {span} nonsense and then copying the HTML code that Dreamweaver creates into the CMS's editor. I've got it down to a pretty decent science but want to speed up the process if possible.... [more]

twisteddomain, yours is the best suggestion (both of them), and one day, I'll get our IT people to fix the CSS. For now, though, plain-as-it-gets converting is great, and wordcleaner does it quite well.
