Ask post: Plan for post-partum family visits?
Speaking as one with a 6-week old baby in my arms, I would have to agree with the advice above. You just do not want your family lounging around the house while you wander around in a sleep-deprived haze with your shirt off because your nipples hurt. As long as your partner is around, you'll be able to take showers, run to the bathroom, heat up a meal, and feed/clothe/diaper the baby. That's about all you're going to want to do. I had friends sign up for evening meal drop-offs after about a week... [more]

Ask post: Open plan offices: Do they suck?
Also anecdotal, but I've worked in open plan offices and had good experiences where I thought productivity was enhanced. The work was highly collaborative so having easy access to co-workers was really great. Everyone had to be respectful of each other in terms of noise and such but, depending on the work, it can be beneficial. All the staff, including the bosses was on the floor, too, so it made access to the managers and bosses much easier.

Ask post: Where is a cheap and secure place to leave a car in San Francisco overnight for one night?
The car rental place won't let you drop off after-hours? That's unusual, you should ask about that. Otherwise, ask your hotel, they might have options for you.

Ask post: Ooh, what's inside there?
Plenty of times, there are entire floors of buildings that have been closed off because they're no longer in use and aren't maintained. Or alternatively, if it's a new-ish building, entire floors can be left unfinished until funding or the development climate is available/right. If it's likely that the space will be needed in the future but isn't currently needed, it's often more efficient and cost-effective to build the entire building and leave the currently unneeded space as a... Ask post: What happened to my windows\system32\config\system file??
Sheesh. I did see all those other questions and responses AND googled the error message extensively. They all seem to hinge on needing the XP Install disk which I mentioned not having. I was hoping there was some other solution but I guess not. That Microsoft article doesn't address my situation either. It also requires the install disk and truthfully is written in the usual MS language that consistently uses phrases and words that are meaningless to a non-tech person such as... [more]

Here's your fix

Thanks, but the first step of that one is:

1. Insert the Windows XP cd into the top cd drive

Which I don't have. Clearly, I need it.

Okay, so I just paid a guy $85 to come over and fix it. He backed up all my data and wiped the hard drive. Good enough for me. I guess it just really irritates me that without having a degree in computer science, I have no hope of solving this myself. It's all a totally alien language that to my mind, is designed to be incomprehensible. There are lots of things that I can figure out on my own with a manual and some good advice; this was not one of them. My next computer is a Mac.

Yeah, I know. Things break and Macs break, too. But in my experience, at least the instructions for what to do about it are clear and meant to be read by "normal" people.

Ask post: Sleeping on your side: hurt your shoulder?
I'm usually a side sleeper but lately, due to pregnancy, I kind of am required to be. On top of that, I have bad hand swelling/carpal tunnel and the only way I can sleep without causing hand pain and numbness while on my side is to have my arms stretched straight out, perpendicular to my body. In my normal side-sleeping, i would have the down-side arm curled up under the pillow and never had any shoulder pain. However, now that I have to sleep with arms outstretched, i do have shoulder pain in... [more]

Ask post: Cancelling voicemail feature on verizon
So I don't really understand. Do you hate talking to people on the phone or do you just hate listening to your voicemail? Do you never answer your phone? If you seriously don't want to talk to people, don't give them your phone number but if you do give them your phone number, one would expect that you actually want to talk to them and so if they called, and you didn't answer, why would you not want to know? I guess the suggestion to leave a voicemail message telling people you would prefer that... [more]

There's a very long thread that discusses gdiapers on altdotlife.com (in the "Gear" pages), but you'd have to join the forum to read it. It's well-worth joining (free, too) for all the info you can get on all sorts of baby stuff.

Ask post: I'll have the Crown & coke without the Crown... I guess.
I don't think any determination of alcoholism is possible just by looking at the number of drinks someone has. It's not the quantity that one consumes but the drinker's relationship to that quantity. Plenty of people can drink every night and not be considered an alcoholic (though I'm guessing it's not super common)- it's about the ability to *stop* drinking when there are consequences to the behavior. On the other hand, someone who drinks 3-5 times a week and is *dependent* upon those 3-5... [more]

Sounds to me like you've just hit that annoying age where your metabolism slows down and you just can't eat as much as you used to without gaining. Be sure you're cutting out the right calories. and keeping the good ones. Getting enough protein and fiber are key to making me feel okay when I'm trying to reduce. And you don't mention how much you were cutting out that resulted in really cranky and weak. Do a gradual reduction in calories and see if you can cut out even 200 per day and see if that... [more]

I was going to say Excelsior, too. That's my neighborhood and though my kitty is indoor only, I see cats out a bit and it seems pretty safe. Ask post: It's like Sex in the City, without the sex and in Chicago
Whether to take the train is somewhat dependent on what you end up wanting to do while you're in the city. Certainly taking the train in (though Sunday schedules are a bit sparse) and then switching to the el to go up north would be easy. Also depends on how much you want to walk but parking in Lakeview is pretty grim.

Do you want to do inside stuff or outside stuff? Chicago is rife with outdoor space to explore for free. And even if I weren't able to buy anything there... [more]
