Encyclopedia of Transportation Planning Strategies
This is just like the dinner parties I go to with all my planner friends. I don't know how our spouses and dates put up with it but I guess it's payback for all the internet strategy/start-up small talk I endured in the late 90s at every single party I got dragged to by my then-boyfriend.

Cardboard Tube Fighting League
For those of you so inclined, it looks like there's a duel this weekend in San Francisco. I'll be at a kickball game, or maybe a spelling bee, maybe a pillow fight or whatever the latest retro-nostalgic activity the cool kids have cooked up for us.

Since you already plugged two of my events, why not throw in my Urban Golf and 9.8th Fighting Kite Brigade and round it out.
Had I known.....I certainly would have. I actually kinda like both the pillow fight and the spelling bees. I'm just variously amused and confused about how everything I did when I was in 5th grade is now somewhat fetishized by the kids in the Mission (and I was once one of those, too).

Favela Rising
I guess by "recent" I meant within the last few years. My apologies to those whose sense of time differs. It was shown at some film fests in 2005 and released theatrically in 2006.

Oh, damn.
When I lost 30 pounds last year, it was all due to dietary changes. I didn't change anything about my activity level (fairly low). I was kind of shocked that it was that simple but exercise didn't seem to play any part at all.

it wouldn't be make believe if you believed in me
So awesome! A couple of years ago at Burning Man my camp built a paper moon (pics) swing and it was totally sweet. It was great as an antidote to all the high tech loudness everywhere. At every time of the day and night you could go by and see couples swinging on it, kids playing on it, or entire squadrons of panda-bear-suited ravers blissing out on it.

California has been delta tough situation
That book/card set that you linked to (last link) is an endlessly fascinating look at the cultural landscape history of the Delta. My boyfriend and I have taken the book with us on a few drives through the Delta and it's really fascinating. Jane Wolff is very cool and I totally recommend her Delta Primer.

Yep. Just got an email from one of the jerks I work with. There aren't a whole lot of jerks here but he does deserve the title. And yes, he writes his emails in Comic Sans. Figures.

His version of the The Secret Life of Arabia is totally amazing and I'm kicking myself for ever having gotten rid of my copy of B.E.F's Music of Quality and Distinction where it appeared. Along with Gary Glitter doing Suspicious Minds. Man, I miss those Heaven 17 days.

Modern Military Ruins of San Francisco
I think most of them are undergoing redevelopment. They've started construction on homes at Hunters Point. Treasure Island is well underway. Novato (Hamilton) seems to be moving along. I guess the Nike site stays put and of course, the Presidio is a done deal.

Tammy Faye says goodbye
I saw a screening of The Eyes of Tammy Faye a few years ago that included a pre-screening on-stage chat between Tammy and John Waters. She was awesome and the crowd at the Castro Theater adored her. I don't agree with her faith but in terms of compassion and pure loving kindness, she's hard to beat.

It’s a story told in a physical way. You might call it a massively multimedia project. It is an alternative universe with thousands of gwomes (a term meaning "the footprint of [a] nation) occupying an area somewhat congruent with North America. Each culture has its own history. It is a kind of reinterpretation of the American landscape. The project involves a web component, photography, books, performances, and physical installations--including a series of... [more]

Nature's Sumo Wrestlers
Yeah they do move fast. I saw them about two weeks ago and it's really shocking (and almost nightmare-ish) how fast they can travel on dry, hilly sand dunes. Though they are somewhat oblivious of people until you're right next to them. That's one of the reasons they were over-hunted: it's easy to walk up quietly behind one and stick him with a big spear. You'd better have good aim though!

Afroblanco: Thanks, it's my very first! Yeah the nose is odd; only the males have it and apparently it helps them produce that low motorcycle-exhaust-pipe noise they make to frighten off the other dudes.

Imagine transferring hundreds of pounds of your body to your child in a month and then - swimming to Alaska. It's not the alpha males that're tough.
Yeah and as a further obscure animal fact, the females breed before they leave the island. However, the fertilized egg with which they leave the beach, lies dormant for about four month as a single layer blastocyst, floating freely in the uterus. After about four months, when the female has had a chance... [more]

This new plan and proposed use, though, makes me see the Drill Court space in a whole new light. Interesting note: The Examiner article linked here says the Drill Court was also used for filming the spaceship scenes in Star Wars.... [more]

Retail Therapy
Re: the zoning - the locations he chooses generally have some sort of land use regulations that require ground floor retail so as to preserve the commercial character of the street. So, by putting the store in the the front and therefore occupying the street frontage with a retail use, even if it's not a profitable use, the writing workshop in the back is allowable.
