Son of Mass Canoe Rental Meet Up Concept
I'm down with it Karl, especially because you mentioned nutria. Perhaps I should bring my camcorder, as not long ago I got some good video of Lake Washington beavers.

How about Saturday? I suggest this from a purely selfish perspective, as is looks like Saturdays don't require a parking fee. I'm a dreaded driver, as mrzarquon can attest.
And Saturday would work well if people want to drink alcohol afterwards...
All these years in Seattle and I've never been there. I was out there just now to double check the location, and I see they have a veritable flotilla of aluminium canoes. Good choice Karl.

Karl, the canoes I saw looked like multiple-human models. Doesn't two-per-canoe make for more symmetrical paddling?

It was a very good meetup, and Karl is to be commended. No one became tired from paddling, and no one got really wet. We could talk back and forth between canoes, at least most of the time.
We saw a large bald eagle in a tree, perched on what looked like a dowel. It was surrounded by squawking crows. Later, we saw a big bird circling the open water, and the others identified it as an eagle as well, probably the same one. We passed two large herons... [more]

The Little House in Ballard is now empty.
Thanks for the update, Slarty. I would have otherwise missed this story. Weirdly, I'm wearing the same green Carhartt shirt today as I was when your photo was taken...
Yeah, I thought about that old lady too. My father lives alone back in Montana, in the house I grew up in, and he's about the same age. Thankfully his house is not bounded on three sides by vertical concrete walls. I must go visit him this summer. My secret goal is to get him the Mansfield Library and show... [more]

I vote Shultzy's for the good reasons listed by others and the presence of gumbo.

While I felt erudite regaling those in attendance with my knowledge of nutria, I was outshined by owhydididoit's revelation that Catholics consider both the nutria and the capybara "fish" and so may eat them on Fridays.

My knowledge of fiction is poor, and so was publicly excoriated for my failure to recognise the allusion to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the source of Slarty Bartfast's moniker.
Later though, I extracted no small degree of literary revenge, as I was conversant in the works of John Rechy and Joseph Wambaugh, specifically as their books related to "park fairies".

I was impressed that owhydididoit knew that brains are very high in cholesterol.
I was wowed by fuzzbean's anecdote regarding an OCD fear of prions.
I failed to engage in meaningful conversation with ArtW, and vow to do so in the future.
We tossed around the idea of the next meet-up occurring in Georgetown, and I like that idea.

The Sun Is Here Seattle, Let's Have A Meetup!
There has been talk of Mike's Chili Parlor in one of y2karl's earlier posts. I have never been, but there's a certain beauty in meeting up at the subject of a MeFi post.
I've been here since 1987, and have yet to go to Mike's. I'm now told it has really good chili, so I'd like to check it out. One vote for Mike's.

I'll be selling bootleg shirts in the parking lot. Same font, same blue color, but to avoid legal action "Metafilter" is cleverly misspelled as "Metaphilter". I'll have others that feature Bart Sampson.

The chili was excellent, as advertised. Would eat again.
I met a number of very smart, literate, and eclectic individuals.
For a time, I was seated next to Agent Seamalt Jones, and so was able to exchange meaningful anecdotes about "slugs", the legality of feeding parking meters, lockpicks, digital audio, conductivity of copper vs. the conductivity of verdigris, and the alarming rise in copper theft. He seemed mildly melancholy about... [more]

According to Bill Hicks, I should "suck on a tailpipe" because I once sold a pickup truck on Craigslist using (gasp) photographs and descriptive text. Understandably, I'm somewhat upset by this, but I find solace in the fact that I'm joined by people who sell pink melamine dishes on e-bay, people who put up "Saturday Yard Sale" signs, bands on MySpace, and "escorts" whose pictures appear in the back of The Stranger.

Incidentally, someone I know and respect used the word "The Ints" today to describe what would hitherto be described as Teh Intrernets. I mention it only because half of me hates the expression, and the other half wants to be the first on MeFi to use it. Discuss.
I see no reason to upset the status quo, and shall continue to use the proper vernacular; Teh Intertubes.

I should like to proffer my soup analogy. Soup is essentially homogeneous as far as taste goes. I really doesn't take more than one spoonful assess if it is too salty, too hot, or too thin. Likewise comments on particular websites are by and large homogeneous.
This is a roundabout way of saying that you really don't have to spend much time to asses the temperament of YouTube or Metafilter comments. While I think this mashup is funny, and in fact "favorited" it,... [more]

Big love for community heroism
In the interests of not instigating a complete conversational black hole, does anyone have excellent theories on how mefi manages to attract such delicious peoples?
My own theory is simple social stratification. Not-so-smart people don't feel comfortable in a room full of smart people. If you are a not-so-smart person, you probably won't understand the humor of many of the searingly witty and subtle comments. You won't get many of the oblique... [more]

Tube, that sounds like an idealized version of MeFi. "Pompous" is still a popular insult here.
Yes, intelligence and pomposity are not mutually exclusive, and of course you see that on display here too. Good point. I'm suggesting that in general, the critical mass of smart found here is a good de facto barrier against dumb.

We want the airwaves...
I suspect, but do not know, that this is a trend with morning radio programs. At work I listen to KZOK here in Seattle, and the DJ's often discuss "human interest" stories that I recognize as originating from Boing Boing, Digg, Reddit, etc. I've yet to hear any stories come from Metafilter, though.
The DJ's are constantly looking things up on the 'net and talking about them on the air.
What could be an easier source of material for starting conversations?
