15 Vintage Warplanes in Flying Condition

As the Seattle PI notes "Paul Allen's 'Flying Heritage Collection' of 15 planes, mostly dating from the 1930s and '40s, is noteworthy both because of its rarity -- several are the only models of their kind remaining -- and its condition -- almost all of them have been refurbished so that they can be flown."

How to build cheap-and-cheerful dog agility...

Instant Agility: Build Your Own Dog Agility Equipment How to build cheap-and-cheerful dog agility equipment using materials found in your local hardware store, along with some training tips from Mrs. Maxwelton. There are a number of other sites that do this, but not that many have clear step-by-step instructions. So far we've only had time to add a few obstacles, but hope to add a few more over the course of the summer...

Cows with new calves kept out of pasture: Why?

Moo: Our local farmer, who raises beef cattle organically (no antibiotics, no fertilizers on their home-grown feed, etc., etc.), keeps all of his cows with new calves in a plowed (dirt) field for about two months after the little ones are born. Why?

Magnificent Views and Vistas, Mountaineer's Climbs 1912 to 1916

"The object of this organization shall be to explore the mountains, forests and water courses of the Pacific Northwest, and to gather into permanent form the history and traditions of this region; to preserve, by protective legislation or otherwise, the natural beauty of the Northwest coast of America; to make frequent or periodical expeditions into these regions in fulfillment of the above purposes. Finally, and above all, to encourage and promote the spirit of good fellowship and camaraderie among the lovers of out-door life in the West." Thus reads the charter of the Mountaineers. PERL script debugging help

Need a PERLexpert to help me figure out why a canned script I use to FTP from one server to another has suddenly stopped being 100% reliable. My host upgraded my PERL version and that may be what has caused it to puke. The script is running on a freeBSD web host on Apache. I think the script is generally solid, it worked fine for years, and I haven't changed it. The original author is no longer supporting it, I don't think. I can budget a couple of hours at $100/per for this. If it takes longer than that to fix, I will need to approach my client to pay for this, which would be a joy and make me look even more incompetent than I already do. I'm hoping for a bubblegum and bailing wire solution.

New Search Box on Blue / Horizontal Scroll Bar

The "Google Custom Search" box on the blue is causing a horizontal scroll bar to appear in Firefox/Windows. The input box is just too darn large. I'd guess 100 pixels or so too wide?

Can a shared well be unshared?

Disentangling from the neighbors: If we pay (or pay part), can we "force" our neighbor to drill their own well? We have a shared well which is on our property.

The Agony of Defeat

One man appeared more often than any other on the sports anthology ABC's Wide World of Sports: Yugoslavian ski jumper Vinko Bogataj, whose spectacular 1970 crash was shown in the show's opening montage to the words "and the agony of defeat." (Despite the brutality of the crash, he suffered only a concussion.) He still lives in his hometown of Lesce, Slovenia, and since retiring from his factory job in 2005 has devoted himself to critically acclaimed painting. Charmingly enough, he had no idea of his celebrity status until he was asked to appear during a special to mark the show's 20th anniversary in 1981.

The Graet Company

Hurley-Pugh Motor Bicycle Company Many great motor manufacturers have been lost to the vicissitudes of Progress, but perhaps the least known and greatest of all is Britain's Hurley-Pugh. Manufacturers of gentlemen's motor velocipedes, the business sense of Sir John Hurley, combined with the brilliance of his chief engineer and designer, Alaric Pugh, resulted in machines which, while a trifle difficult to work on, were well ahead of their time. Sadly the company is probably best remembered today for the Isle of Man TT scandal involving chief test rider, Eric "Killer" Steerforth.
