Help with colleges/universities offering bachelors degrees in "Interdisciplinary Studies".
Go down to your local library and look in the reference section for the Book of Majors. On page 1282 (of the 2009 edition) is a list of schools offering "student-designed majors," grouped by state. 4 pages worth. Sadly, does not appear to be available online, even at the collegeboard.com site.
If you have a specific state in mind, I might be willing to transcribe a short list into my next answer (I'm sitting in a library that has that book until 8pm tonight).... [more]

Would it just be easier to tell my customers to buy a Mac?
I would also like to make the page static. That is, I want to prevent a user's browser settings (e.g. for font size) from effecting how my page displays.
Bad idea. You don't think anyone with visual problems (or anyone over 60) will ever try to access your site? You want them to be able to read it, right? Then they need to be able to increase the font size. Please do not specify everything in exact sizes - use percentages and ems/exs.

How do I override CSS from inside the BODY of the website?
HTMLhelp has a good basic guide to CSS, including inlining. It looks like you may also be able to import a style sheet using a style tag in the body.

Are you trying to override for yourself, or for everyone viewing? Can you edit all of the HTML, or just portions inside the actual BODY tag? If you have access to the entire HTML file, you can easily add another style sheet of your own to be imported along with the others. As I said above, it looks like you can also import from within a STYLE tag, like so:
<STYLE TYPE="text/css">

A lot of people zero out everything (* { margin: 0; padding: 0; }) to minimize browser differences. I do.
Can you change anything at all? Enough to know you're getting the syntax right? In your padding example, does making it !important work?
Remember, a more specific rule (or more !important) overrides a less specific one. ID is more specific than class is more specific than HTML element. Seriously, look at that cascading order link above - it... [more]

Slumber Party Suggestions
When I was having slumber parties, we provisioned ourselves with the four Cs:
crunchy
chewy
carbonated and
chocolate
This usually translated to chips, Skittles, Coke, and Hershey's Miniatures. Granted, that was high school and 3-5 girls - that much sugar might be a bad idea for your crowd.

Cheap, nice studio within 30-45 mins of Manhattan?
Gotta agree with nasreddin - this is the "cheap, fast, good - pick two" problem. You're either going to need to lower your standards (a share instead of an apt), raise your costs, or increase your commuting time in order to find anything.

The problem with the feed that filters out all the items tagged "mac" (or any of the variants), is that it also eliminates stuff that is both Mac and Windows. Or any other OS. So you also have to subscribe separately to the feed for the tag you do want.

Do burglars read AskMeFi?
I read a whole book on real burglars, and the best advice therein was to throw them something to make them think they'd hit the jackpot - meaning they'd think that was it and leave.
Decide what NOT having your entire living space tossed/destroyed would be worth to you - leave the cash equivalent in a money clip near the front door/on your dresser, as if you forgot it. Depending on your neighborhood and what they might hope to get, this might be $100, or it might be $500.... [more]

I do think the tampon/other feminine products box was genius, as are the kitty litter suggestions (saw that used in a book once, but I can't remember where). Also - at the bottom of the kitchen trash can, under the bag (but only if there's trash in it).

If you have a second AC unit, why not ask the landlord if you can put it in the apt below you until the new tenants arrive? Would be similar to, but more effective than that suggestion of a fan. Of course, this assumes there's electricity available in the apartment (could you temporarily run an outdoor extension cord?)

I love you, but I hate your style.
Let me reiterate one point almost every one has skipped: do not do the one polite wearing. That will add to the impression that the gift is successful. Never wear any of them. By all means, ask for a gift receipt - if you can bring yourself to tell her they're "just not my style," rather than they don't fit, that seems more likely to stop the trend, rather than "doesn't fit" which might just make her try a different size.

Help me learn to like coffee.
As someone very sensitive to bitter tastes in anything, I have to respectfully disagree with everyone who says "take it black". I still cannot drink even good coffee black, even after 10 years.
Try lots of half-and-half. That cuts the bitterness even better than milk. Once you find a drinkable level, then start dialing it back to normal levels. Bonus: you won't be burning your tongue.
And yes, definitely the non-dark roasts, and a pinch of sugar.

How Can I Help You?
Another librarian here:
We are not a free daycare service. Do not drop off your children and leave, or tell them to walk here after school and stay until you pick them up. Library does not necessarily equal "completely safe place". Pedophiles use the library too. And with 20+ unsupervised kids (other than me), I'm not going to notice if your kid goes off with a stranger. Also, if your kid misbehaves, I will throw them out for the day, and you might want them to... [more]

theichibun, as you acknowledge, most people cannot seem to talk quietly on their cell phones. And to be fair, the rules must apply to everyone. If I let someone talk quietly without saying something, you can bet that within 10 minutes, one of their neighbors at the computer will be shouting into their own cell phone and annoying everyone trying to concentrate within range.
Honestly, the worst part is actually the ringing of the phones, but once it's started, there's... [more]

I have concrete walls, and I second the 3M command strip hooks (and they have Velcro-like strips for up to 3lbs). The extra-large hooks are supposed to be good for up to 30lbs , and I'm using 2 for a mirror right now. It's been up for 8 months (2 is probably overkill, but better safe... right?).

I'm not going to bother repeating anything above, but for your fantasy/sf list I wanted to recommend Jane Yolen, particularly the Pit Dragon trilogy and the Great Alta series (Sister Light, Sister Dark; White Jenna; The One-Armed Queen).
The Alta books are about an all-female warrior society, very empowering, and fascinating for the reader (not to mention the storytelling style, which mingles myth, fable, song, and "real story"). Very unusual, and fun.... [more]

I'll illustrate the other side: when I saw the list of people/current locations invited to my high school reunion, I would estimate more than 50% were no longer anywhere near our high school. In fact, saying 80% had moved away would not seem like a stretch.
However, I grew up in a VERY military area (2 Army bases, 1 Navy, 1 Air Force, Coast Guard training station), so most people did not have roots there. That would probably skew the results. I always tell people that no... [more]
