Ask post: what should i buy while im in the usa that is much cheaper than in europe? Will i need to pay taxes too as a german citizen?
My girl buys tons of underwear and girly frilly things when she is in the US.

And microphones. Made in Germany/Austria. Shipped to the USA. Sells for 50% off.

I can only speak from my experience at Hamburg airport...If you pull multiple bags off of the Laufband at the baggage claim and they look really heavy, the Zollbeamten are gonna pull you aside and have a chat with you. A few mionths ago they were pulling people into their little room left and right and having them go through their luggage looking for undeclared goods. Pass auf! They are... [more]

Ask post: Thirty-three and a third books.
I read the 2 about Daydream Nation and Loveless. I found them both to be boring and poorly written in the kind of OMG!!! MY FAVORITE BAND IS AWESOME AND MADE THE BEST RECORD EVER!!! style filled with the kind of hyperbole that only a total fanboy could come up with. The Daydream Nation one is almost unreadable but I forced myself to finish it.

I think the series is better in theory than practice.

Yes.

Ask post: Where can I spread the word about my project to musicians who might be interested?
That sounds like a good start. Also try putting it on Projects. If it's good maybe someone will put it on the front page.

Maybe hand out flyers with info at SXSW-like events?

Check out citymundo.com. Houseboats, studios, apartments and houses for rent (for minimum 3 nights) in various price ranges. I think you'll find what you are looking for. My girlfriend and I stayed in a cool and affordable room close to the city center when we visited last month.

Ask post: PubMed
Hmmm. It doesn't say where you are in your profile but if there is a university near you that has a program related to the journal you are interested in, they may have access set up via IP address that just lets you in if you are coming from an activated IP address. So, go the library, sit at a terminal if you can, and try it out.

Or do what everybody else does: If you know how to contact the author, ask him or her for a pdf. Publishers frown upon it but it happens ALL... [more]

I would be extremely surprised if any library had its digital library available through wifi. They would need to pay for all potential users to do so.

Many of them do, so students can bring their laptops onto campus or into the libraries and access the content. The publishers can't control it and very few have the resources to sic lawyers on them, so they don't. The publishers don't want to be "the dicks" because the subscriptions are... [more]

Ask post: How Do I get started in the recording side of the music business?
I agree with Dee Xtrovert but I think getting some sort of classes or training under your belt is a good idea. It gives you a bit of an edge because of some of the technical knowledge you will gain such as signal flow, rudimentary knowledge about electronics, experience with different kinds of studio equipment. You can learn it on the job, but it's better if you have an idea about what is going on, technically, before you start. However, this doesn't mean you know a goddamn thing. Book smarts is... [more]

Ask post: .htaccess files and groups
Is editing two files (independent of the number of protected directories) really such a big deal?

Yes. It increases the possibility of error that we are trying to reduce. If I understand you correctly, this would actually increase the number of files I would have to edit. It seems that the way we have it now is the easiest.
If it is, why not just create a simple shell script that modifies both files for you?... [more]

Ask post: What's good in Stamford, CT?
Hmmm.

There is a few Irish pubs on or around bedford st.( tigin's is the only one I can remember) all close to each other.

Bobby Valentine’s Sports bar is not too far away. It used to be a scary place. Jonmc took me in there once and damn near got us all killed cuz of that loud mouth of his. I think they cleaned up a bit. So I have heard.

There's Brennan's in Shippan. Family Irish bar with decent food.... [more]

Ask post: Is this pot?
Hmm. There is a bench right next to this planter and on occasion we find people chilling out there and what not. Also, there is at least one dealer in our street, so maybe a customer was testing out his recent purchase and cleaned his or her bag while sitting on the bench and disposed of the seeds and stems in the planter.

I'll pull it up when I get home. It disturbs the garden's "feng shui".

So, if I understand you correctly, if the... [more]

Thanks. My sweetie removed it from the planter. As much as I would love to grow my own, this is growing right out on the street and that is still illegal in Germany. Unfortunately, I don't have a garden to replant it in. Since I'm a foreigner here, I like to keep my encounters with the Polizei to a minimum.

Ask post: Why are you singing that way?
I was just trying it the other day on my guitar. I don't know what you call it but it isn't easy at first and requires some practice. I found it difficult to get my voice to hit the same notes as the guitar while improvising. I guess the skill is synching your hands to your voice, while improvising. Showing that the improvisation is coming from your brain and that you are not just going through the motions of playing whatever licks you have memorized.

That said, if I... [more]

Ask post: Dead Marshall Amp
It sounds like the fuse. Did you try it on a different wall socket? It should be easy to fix. Once you open the amp (unplug first) it will be easy to find. It will probably look like small glass tube with a filament in it. If it is indeed a problem with the fuse, you may see that the filament is burned or seperated. Pop it out, take it with you to your local electronics store (radio Shack) or mega cool dude guitar store (guitar Center) and get a replacement with the same specifications that are... [more]

You can't do anything by yourself...you need a teacher. Have him show you how to hold the guitar from day 1. If you try to teach yourself eventually you'll have to unlearn everything you learned wrong. Believe me.

What? Do your parents still tie your shoes for you?

The child is not at all responsible for the iPod. He doesn't have the mental capacity for it, but his life is very much enhanced by having the iPod.

In that case, why should the child get a new iPod? It obviously wasn't responsible enough to have one in the first place.

However, if A is directly responsible for the loss, then A is obligated to do so.

Ask post: Can I trick ProTools?
No. You can not get the firewire output directly into protools. You will have to go in analog. At least this is the case if you are using the Digi002. I assume it would be the same with your interface as well. The extra Firewire port is for daisy chaining an external hard drive. It is stupid, I know, but this is the way Digidesign do things.

Where in Germany does this need to be? Check with the Uni there or nearby. Many universities in Germany, or student groups associated with it, have a Ausstellungsraum or atelier that students can use for their art projects. Wow. After reading all these answers, I would suggest trying to ask an expert. Clearly, nobody here can help you. Perhaps you can just ask the CPS or your doctor if they can recommend a child psychologist/behaviorist in your area who you can talk to and ask about this.

Getting more involved with the kid is good no matter what I would imagine.
