"For fuck's sake" is one of my favorite expressions, 'cause when you think of it, it's actually quite sex positive. What wouldn't I do for fuck's sake? Not much. That's a short fucking list, I tell you.

MeTa post: Double bad.
Also, I have never, ever been to to a corporate open bar that served Macallan 25. Ho. Lee. Shit.

My boss at my last job took our team out to a restaurant with a nice bar as part of a team building event (expensed, in other words). When I found out that they had The Macallan 25, I told the waiter to put my bar bill on a separate tab, and had a couple of doubles (we were all drinking). My boss protested that she would be happy to pay the full tab,... [more]

Also - cortex: You know I love you, man, but The Mac 25 as a consolation prize for Glenlivet 18? That's just crazy talk. You're obviously working too hard.

MeTa post: No "Search" link on the blue anymore?
Actually, the Search box is not redundant with the Search link. The Search box only performs the search for the page you are on (Blue, Green, Gray), while the Search link takes you to a page where you have the option of searching across all the sites. Fortunately, the search link in the footer still takes you to the metasearch page. Unfortunately, it's kind of hard to find for such an important, new-and-improved feature.

Yeah, I should have included that you can change the search parameters after you've made the search from the search box. I was just pointing out that from a UI perspective, the link and the box are not functionally identical, and that for long-time users, it can be pretty disorienting to have a default go underground. I almost made this same MetaTalk post last week, having spent several minutes trying to figure out how to get the old search results, and then searching for any MetaTalk... [more]

MeTa post: MeFi Short Fiction Anthology Due Date Nears!
So, I've got about 2,500 words of mine done, and a fairly good outline of where it's going. I'm probably about 50% done. I should be able to bang the rest out over the next two weeks. I think it'll be pretty cool.

The next person whose comment is solely a reference to Simpsons episode 9F10 ("Marge vs. the Monorail") will receive a scathing MefiMail.

You've been warned.

MeTa post: Raising the level?
I don't think favorites is the problem, I think it's more likely to be a volume issue, as in volume of users and volume of conversation: there are simply too many users speaking too loudly about too many things for the quality of conversation you're talking about to easily filter up through the noise on a consistant basis. The conversations are still there, but it's a big party and the excited buzz all around can make it hard to focus on the things you find the most value in. Given that, I don't... [more]

Is there any empirical evidence that "the types of comments that lower the level of discourse" - as if we'd even be able to come to a consensus on what that meant - are actually being favorited at a high enough rate relative to other comments to even warrant claims of correlation, let alone causation? I just don't see it, personally. Certainly snarks and pileons were de riguer long before favorites came along, and if anything, I suspect that... [more]

MeTa post: Search within comments?
Which is one of the fixes we're working on.

What's it called when someone starts rooting through someone else's comment history like a truffle hog to get that perfect AHA zinger from something someone said half a decade ago? We'd like to discourage that behavior, even as we'd like to make search much much better.

Wait... Lemme get this straight: You're going to make search better, and then immediately neuter it to thwart a... [more]

MeTa post: Sometimes AskMe takes you in a surprising...
Since it has already been pointed out that "cheat or learn" is a false dichotomy, at least in this case (there are other options), perhaps we can look for a moment at the idea of "self-improvement" through deception. At what point is the theoretical value of the "self-improvement" - which I would claim is a negligible or questionable degree of improvement in this case, anyway - cancelled by the actual erosion of one's resistance to gaming the social contract? In... [more]

grumblebee: That's why I said I wasn't arguing slippery slope. My point isn't that "the more someone shoplifts, the closer they get to robbing a bank," it is that the more someone shoplifts, the likelier they are to make the choice to shoplift again. As for whether someone who cons their friends can be trusted as a spouse, well - I'd not personally be inclined to trust them, evidence or no. (And incidentally, I rarely have evidence to support any of my opinions, though they are... [more]
