Apparently, no thread is safe this week from Brockles' complaints about Americans.

Apparently, some Americans can't tell an observation from a complaint.
Er...What?
Brockles observing a few days ago and continuing to observe for many comments with great enthusiasm that USian whining about gas prices is unjustified.
Brockles observing eight days ago that USian security theater does not apply to the rest of the world, with bonus cheap shot observation towards TSA employees.... [more]

*widens blinkers, removes filter with which he had been reading Brockles' posts, overcomes persecution complex, laments failed hope for no hard feelings, really sees world for first time, cries big fat baby tears of joy, tries to remember to "help maintain a healthy, respectful discussion by focusing comments on the issues, topics, and facts at hand, not at other members of the site, tomayto, tomahto, potayto, potahto*
Let's call the whole thing off.

Place matters
I have heard that people who are interested in being somehow involved in the filmmaking industry often move to or near the "Hollywood" portion of the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Interesting, but I think I will go somewhere else on advice for web design.
Yeah, it still sucks, but You should have seen how it used to look.

Conjuror or Barbarian?
The new update is awesome. Sometimes, all the items in the store disappear and you can't buy anything. Since you can only go to the store once a level or so depending on when you find the scroll, and since the life/death margin is razor thin at high difficulty levels, this renders the game unplayable. Comments on kongregate suggest that this is a common problem.

"You know, there's something stirring about the peaceful transfer of no power"
The biggest lie ever sold is that the media in this country is liberal. It is in fact instinctively status quo and corporatist, and there is no liberal equivalent to Fox News.
I like to take any opportunity (as I have several times previously on Metafilter) to pimp Eric Alterman's What Liberal Media?
ornate insect's two sentences quoted above serve as a fairly good thesis statement for the book. Alterman is thorough, clear, and convincing.

The Major Little League
What made Improv Everywhere good was that their pranks were genuine interventions that brought into question everyday practices in a given space. If the pranks were inspirational, or magical, or whatever, it was only because they were, at their core, kind of scary. They walked the tightrope between creating a sense of the sublime and a sense of unease.
These latest pranks, though—this baseball game, and the Mall musical—are milquetoast acts of suburban public theatre, and... [more]

You're right, languagehat. I didn't comment on the thread because a new thing by a group whose work I'd previously enjoyed didn't do it for me, though others who I respect on a site that I enjoy seemed to like it quite a bit. Really I commented because everything sucks and since this is a thing, it follows that this sucks as well, and there's nothing that I enjoy more than telling everyone about things that (it goes (almost) without saying) suck.
I'd forgotten that... [more]

Prolonging the Battle
I never thought I'd be contemplating a protest vote against a Democratic candidate, but when the general election arrives, I will seriously consider not only the candidate, but also their path to the ticket.
The two Democratic candidates have virtually identical policy positions; voting for someone with wildly different positions on many important issues, such as McCain, because of sour grapes about how the campaign in the primary went for your guy... [more]

US Presidential Greatness as a Function of Experience
IANAStatistician. 1) The hypothesis tested here seems to be "There is a linear relationship between an increase in experience and improvement on the ranking list." But why assume that the relationship is exactly linear? It seems likely, for example, that additional years of experience suffer from diminishing marginal returns at a certain point. 2) I don't think a sample size of 42 is large enough to tell us anything interesting, particularly because of the cluster of data points... I could smother the child. I could not smother the child.
Morality is not like an object of nature that can be determined independent of our hunches.
I hesitate to wade in here, but some people think that it is independent. Moral realists think that there are such things as moral facts, and that "Killing a person is wrong" might be such a moral fact that is true or false in precisely the same way that "Moscow is the capital of Russia" is true or false--no matter what our hunches are about... You're absolutely right about action descriptions playing a central role. There's also impact from philosophy of language and mind. You're puzzled by a central problem in metaethics--We talk about moral judgments as though they are objective things, and we think that moral judgments can be action-guiding, but we don't think that objective things are action-guiding. Just because I believe that Moscow is the capital of Russia doesn't mean that I'm motivated to do anything in particular--it's bad... [more]

Laptops, by 8-year-olds.
Is it wrong that I'm scared at how well some of these children know the QWERTY layout? Did they reference a real keyboard, or do they know by heart what I learned by wrote at an age much later?
I just realized that, though I'm a very good touch typist, I have no idea what the layout of the keys looks like exactly, and I surely couldn't reproduce the keyboard layout in a drawing without looking at one. Psychologists! Do a study and figure out what's up with that! Thanks!
