The Prime Of Miss Jean Bonaldi
Would love to fly over for the meetup, but can't. Will definately be at the next one. If anyone's coming over to Dublin we should have a mefi meetup here in Ireland this autumn.

Luke Kelly: The Performer
Any fan of the Dubliners should be aware of the recent "Ballad of/for Ronnie Drew".
All those artists- (can you name them all?) except for maybe Glen Hansard, did the song live on on The Late Late show a few months back. Hansard was in LA for the Oscars.
Whether the song lives up to the man is up to you, but the interviews that followed were touching, depressing, and also funny at times. Pat Kenny couldn't resist fawning and shoving the microphone in Bono's... [more]

Paris+Gold+Grain Metaphor =What book?
Hey suedehead! That's not it but you've helped me find it- the 'skulls' mention in Ulysses reminded me that there may have been some reaper imagery to go along with the grain analogy, and lo and behold, the first paragraph of Balzac's "The girl with the Golden Eyes":
One of those sights in which most horror is to be encountered is, surely, the general aspect of the Parisian populace–a people fearful to behold, gaunt, yellow, tawny. Is not Paris a vast field in... [more]

Hey guys, those are all great answers. I'm glad I can give some educated advice now. I don't think he'd go for the Wisconsin Dells, being a classy guy and all, so I'll pass on the other rec's.
Thanks!

Why can't you believe everything you read in a history book?
Perhaps more literary than what you're looking for, but Gabriel García Márquez's novel "Crónica de una muerte anunciada" (chronicle of a death foretold) is essentially 4 retellings-- some mutually exclusive-- of a murder as an investigative journalist searches for the real story in a small town in colombia.

Meetup Eire?
I'll be moving to Dub in two weeks, so sometime in late September would suit me well... say the 21st or 22nd? I feel reluctant to name the place, because I can only remember the name of one or two bars from last time I visited. Any suggestions? Attendees?

Ok, looks like a no-go. Maybe we can try again around Halloween. Perhaps a West-Coast meetup, too if there are more folks out that way. Either way, I'll be up for a Dublin meetup if anyone proposes one in the upcoming months.

Is calling a poster a cheap jerk appropriate for the green?
The poster wasn't asking if he's being a cheap jerk. He was asking about protocol when one feels one has been ripped off, albeit for a small amount of money, and specifically what the consequences would be regarding credit reporting agencies. I'm disappointed-- the green really could yield some helpful fact-based answers on this topic if people didn't have their heads up their asses.

College Documentary!
Public records offices keep some very cool historical photos that show you what a place looked like before it became whatever it is now. Some environmental History classes have you do research projects on histories of a particular physical space, but I've never seen s college-specific a documentary on what used to stand where a college now is. That would be very interesting, especially if you could incorporate old photos, film, newspapers, or land survey illustrations.

I hope the aliens are smarter than me. The third pane of that second link-- the one that explains mathematical definitions, copywright Frank Drake-- I'm getting the three dots... and the number three... but what are these damn line thingies that equal both!?
Ok, just looked at the next few frames.

Can I get anything I want other than Alice's Restaurant?
Male singer, but a fairly balanced, slightly folk-rock rock song. Other than that, details are pretty hazy. I did think it was unusually radio friendly and catchy for a modern overtly political song if that helps...

Oh, and I think there were periods where the singer talked, rather than sang a few lyrics-- very conversationally, almost storytelling.

All great sugestions, and some awesome songs, but no matches. Like Alice's restaurant wasn't an overt "protest song," but was unusually specific about modern events- it could probably be enjoyed by those not on the far left too...

Seamus- that's pretty darn close; mystery song was a little more upbeat/ positive/ cooky, but I'm getting some great songs out of this thread! thanks all.

How to be handsomely witty?
Watch Black Adder, and go jogging. With a bunch of endorphins coursing through you, you'll be sharper and think you're witty which is half the battle. Unless you're completely un-witty in which case it's a nail in the cofin.

Summer extended-weekend trip from NYC
Caribbean in July is cheap (but hot).
However, it looks like flights haven't dropped in price yet. This flight to Anguilla (sleepy, tiny island with the best beaches) was bout $200 cheaper last year, 4 weeks before purchase.

Fleur de sel to Kosher & Beyond
Anguilla Saltworks Company is the posh modern incarnation of a salt company that was originally started around 150 yrs. ago. While they now only sell 4 sets of bath salts (named after 4 bays of the island, but not the Road Bay salt pond from which the salt comes) the salt company has a storied history.
I couldn't find any links online, so this could be infused with some BS I picked up from the lucky citizens of the island, but the salt from Road bay was supposedly sold... [more]

Well, wikipedia has a very informative article on sleep paralysis, which seems very similar to what you're getting mentally, but perhaps not physically.
Sleep paralysis is $&*#ing awful, and scary as hell- it has the same 'not knowing it's not real' thing you talk about.

Personally, I don't want Calvin & Hobbes made into animations/ films. For Watterson's opinions on the matter, his comments in the forewords and anniversary editions speak volumes.

What should you do to be a drunken sailor?
1) Learn knots, especially the bowline and square (reef) knot. Super important.
