Software Engineer

Work at Yahoo! We're looking for a software engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area to work in the Yahoo data mining group. Our team works on large scalable data mining systems. You should know perl, unix, and C++ and the usual CS stuff: algorithms, data structures, systems. We highly prefer you to have at least a couple years of experience and a computer science degree from a good school. Our projects have a big impact and we have a lot of fun here. We are located on the main campus in Sunnyvale, CA. Approximate salary is posted below (I don't like "depends on experience") based on what I see new hires are getting here but don't hold me to it since it's not set by me. Feel free to email with any questions too.

How to get from the airport to Newport?

What's the best way to get from Providence Theodore Francis Airport to Newport, RI on a Sunday? Taking the bus seems to require 3-4 transfers and take several hours. I also read there is a ferry, but it's quite expensive and slow. Seems a bit too far for a taxi... Any Rhode Island natives here that can pitch in?

My money is doing nothing more than 80% of the time!

Since the stock market is only active from 9:30-4 M-F, (less than 20% of the hours in the week, and even less of the year because of holidays), is it possible to sell at the end of the day and plop the money into a savings account, and then buy again on the beginning of the next day? If not, what prevents this from happening? Is it just fees? Would be an easy way to make an extra 4%/year from interest.

Do Fords really have solid steel frames?

I had an auto accident a while back in a Taurus where a huge truck got crushed against my passenger-side while I drove away with just a dent. The truck's front was completely crushed and it was towed away. I figured it was just luck that my car wasn't damaged much, but I recently read in a Ford brochure that their cars have solid steel frames which may be why my car was okay. Is the "solid steel frame" a marketing thing or really a unique feature of Fords?

I'm tired of plain sandwiches and pasta salad

What good packed lunches have you made? I only know sandwiches and pasta salad, but I can cook. And what kind of containers/bags are cheapest/convenient?

Where's Checkmark?

Have you seen this trend/pattern/graph? The trend I'm looking for looks like a "checkmark". The x-axis is time. The y-axis can be related to rating/score/likeability/satisfaction (even toss me some goofy ideas).

Deja Vu?

Does anyone know of the research paper (study) where they had people do a day-old crossword and they claimed that those people were able to solve those easier than new crossword puzzles? I saw it referenced in "Waking Life" and was wondering if it were a real paper.

Tasty Research: A digest of interesting academic research I read a lot of research papers, sometimes because I have to, but mostly for fun (and learning!). There's a bunch that I think interest the general population and discussing them during dates or at parties makes me seem dorky.

So I'd like to share these interesting research findings and maybe you can learn something useful. More research, less news-entertainment :)

General topics I find interesting (not exclusive):
  • Psychology / Social psychology / Communication
  • Economics / Consumer research / Marketing
  • Social computing, Design, HCI (human-computer interaction)
  • Art and technology
  • Data mining and Information science
  • Email / Spam
