Beautiful Dynamite

Cyd Charisse passed away today at 86. Part of the MGM Golden Age, she first started out in minor roles usually as a dancer (1:52). It wasn't until the Gotta Dance routine with Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain did she begin to get meatier roles.

I believe that literature is working, even amidst this chaos, with a power that can change the world.

Haruki Murakami doesn't do many interviews. However, he granted one to a University of Hawaii journalism student and it was published in the January 2007 issue of GQ Korea. The text has been translated by the blog owner. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

The Flintstones Method of Surveillance

My parents believe the superintendent is stealing supplies from an apartment they own and are renovating. How do they set up a motion activated camera when there is no internet, no VCR or DVR and leaving a laptop there is unsafe?

Modern pointillism from artist Phil Hansen

Profile of Phil Hansen - "Strokes of a Genius" - [Hansen] gives pointillism a modern twist. You might call it "kinetic fragmentism" — pointillism in motion. For instance, Hansen completed an on-camera piece of paint-dipped karate chops to reveal a portrait of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Preferring to post videos of the process of his work on the internet instead of showing the finished product in galleries, Hansen shows the madness in the method in his amazing art.

TSA busts myths, too!

Last week, a woman at DC's Reagan Airport was detained because of water in her son's sippy cup. In an unusual step, the TSA has posted their own Mythbusters site where they show the security footage and the official incident report. Here is BoingBoing's take on the video. And a security/security technology blogger posts about the larger lesson that people readily side against the TSA "because there's no accountability or transparency in the DHS."

Well played, Rob Schneider.

Previously, Roger Ebert had the last word with Rob Schneider. A few days ago, Rob Schneider proves that despite his undiscriminating film choices, bad films do not make a bad person and he is one classy guy.

GiftGivingFilter: What's a creative way to give my boyfriend a skydiving certificate for his birthday?

What's a creative way to give my boyfriend a skydiving certificate for his birthday? I know he's wanted to do this, so I know I won't be going into a situation of "Gee... thanks... *crying on the inside*" I want a better way of giving him a gift certificate for a tandem skydive other than handing him an envelope with a print out inside.

Were my ideas stolen? If so, could I have done anything to prevent it?

I sent an e-mail of panel ideas after an interview to a woman hiring for a well regarded film festival. I did not get the job but when I was looking at the panels months later, I was surprised to find most of my ideas were being used. Was there any way to protect myself?
