MeFi post: That's so... the children's insult of choice!
I tend to say "fucking weak" in the places other people say "so gay." Data point.

It's not merely inconsiderate to align a social descriptor with crappiness. It's rhetorically diminishing to the more useful meaning of the word. Gay qua homosexual is more sociall, progressively, descriptively _functional_ than gay qua bad, useless, lousy, awful, and the latter is stealing from the former.

See that tiny black point, way way down there, creeping closer? That's the end of meaning as we know it, the surrender of cogent progressive discourse. Let's not race... [more]

klang, yeah yeah yeah congratulations on your queer friends who so bravely subvert the illiterate hegemony by demonstrating the plasticity of contextual speech. I don't think Hillary Duff is talking to you.

However, by describing your private practices publicly, you may be setting an inimitable example for some young, dumb asshole. Don't you think your defense of such a culturally specific (granting a continuing heteronormative public imaginary) use of "gay" is... [more]

klang, okay, wevs, yes you are a role model, or maybe not, but anyway I think you're skipping step "You're Doing It Wrong" and heading too quickly to step "This Is How We Do It," and I am sort of charging you to revel less and teach more. Or not, reveling is also something of which we (the royal, editorial) h-approve. Nyes. Because I can't even begin to explain the myriad ways inappropriate public language can be used in private for COMEDY. I LIVE with two Jewish dudes, ffs.... [more]

Perceiving Ira Glass as precious, overproduced, overmannered or feminine isn't homophobic, per se, it's a realistic application of the current spectrums of gender performance in our culture. Just talking that much and with that candor and affability makes him less than macho by US standards, ffs. Also, his voice isn't exactly basso. Gender performance and sexuality are not the same thing, and commenting on the former doesn't have to imply the latter.

He's not gay, btw,... [more]

Precious is a term used to describe objects and children. It is generally diminutive. It is not suitably applied to a grown man.

That's just sexism.

It is the talent of Weird Al that I now hear old top-of-the-pops songs in muzak, and my mind superimposes his lyrics over the real ones.

Yeah but get a little drunk, go dancing and try to sing along to the club's blaring "I Love Rock'n'Roll" and see how awesome you look then...

okay, philip-random, I'll bite. I like him best when he's absurd, dark, or showing his own fandom for groups I, too, love. Some of his best songs, imo:

You Make Me (Oingo Boingo)
Everything You Know Is Wrong (TMBG)
Genius In France (Frank Zappa)
Livin' in the Fridge (Livin' on the Edge)
Albuquerque
Christmas at Ground Zero
Good Old Days

I think a great many people recognize the final palindrome "go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog," and so might "get" that the song is all palindromes at the very end, which is probably intentional. I myself didn't get that the title was hinting at the gimmick until at least five listens, and didn't see the video for another couple years.

straight, Everything You Know Is Wrong is SUPER dear to me, as a deeply geeked TMBG fan, and you will know what I mean when I say that what gets me grinning and almost teary with fanlove every single time is the accordion just going "bomp bomp!" between verses.

gompa, I just get by with the wallet guide to sustainable fish from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Mostly.

I have had worms in my fish once, some Dolly Varden brought home from Alaska. Put me right off Dolly Varden. But I get much more grossed out by the horrors of the factory farm than what naturally exists in the cold, clean waters off Alaska.

Some comics aren't supposed to be funny. I think this is quite dear, as are many of the xkcd comics that deal with life, the universe and everything. For me black space correlates strongly with "aw," if not awe, at xkcd.

MeFi post: The story of a cab ride.
The good stories here are obviously outweighing the cynical smegma.

My only taxi story is a cynic's tale though. The cabbie that took me back to LaGuardia was the only crook I encountered in NYC during my first trip there, alone at age 20, on a trip that featured me wandering lost and out of place through the "WRONG" neighborhood late one night.

It takes all kinds, as the man said.

An assertion that this is not simply poor but manipulative insinuates that I don't have the agency to selectively participate in my own emotional catharses. That's condescending and incorrect, and not exclusively an expression of taste. I find it boorish to ignore the distinction.

sentimentality is dangerous BECAUSE IT KEEPS US FROM ACTUALLY CONNECTING WITH OTHER HUMAN BEINGS.

Not necessarily. Sure, overindulgence in fantasy narratives of any sort, be they stimulating emotionally, intellectually, sexually, etc. can waylay participation in good works, in "real life," but enjoying catalyzed emotional release does not, in and of itself, preclude people from being practical, generous citizens.

I'm clearly not seeing what others are, I'm just asking what's up.

spaltavian, I dunno if this is going to sound insultingly remedial, but Negativland uses recontexualized samples of a wide array of media materials to create music that highlights the absurdism of many cultural institutions in a politically motivating fashion. I don't think the video adds much to that, but it does seem aptly done, it suits the song. Perhaps an interesting contrast... [more]

The funny doesn't quite cover up the yucky. However, the starting material isn't as soulless as could be. I wonder if older porn was picked because we don't react as vicerally to it, or because it tends to feature a more relaxed, happy sense of sexuality, and is easier to goof on. Or if there's a difference.

DU, I think it's a pretty tight demonstration of phenomenology relating to various binarisms in language culture. Of course, it's mostly for fun, but the men <> women one is a pretty tidy analysis of gendering in culture, and the spectrum of representation by which that is accomplished. Note that "men" appears in large font near the "women" side, illustrating how often women are not spoken about without being related to men, but that most words cluster toward the middle. That...
