the future is open {

Papervision3D 2.0 released yesterday. Papervision3D is an open source 3D Engine for flash which provides a lightweight, browser friendly platform for rendering 3d content in your browser window. Papervision (some examples of PV3D in use: 1, 2, 3 (this third one might be awhile to load...), however, is only the tip of the iceberg which is a very committed and talented open source flash community.

Antitechnologos From the artist: The majority of the materials that make up Antitechnologos jewelry have their intended use in a different industry: electronics, robotics, machinery, etc. The intrigue in using these sorts of materials is at once philosophical, aesthetic, and pragmatic.

I was lucky enough to get to make this site for a jewelry making friend of mine. Like the proximity to which her pieces bring a user to technological components, I tried to craft interaction that brings the user closer to the site's functionality. I hope the community enjoys!

I want to stream more freely!

I'm interested in setting up a Flash Media Server. According to Adobe, you must be running Red Hat Enterprise 3 or 4 for this to work. Is it possible that you could run an FMS on centOS?

Anybody want to swap refs?

You cannot guarantee freedom of speech and enforce copyright law. Freenet is a decentralized censorship resistant p2p distributed network which aims to provide freedom of speech through strong anonymity. By pooling bandwidth and hard drive space (similar to Seti@home), users are able to anonymously publish and retrieve any kind of file.

Open source markets

Prediction markets trade uncertainty for collective wisdom, and have been proven to be more accurate than other mechanisms for predicting outcomes such as polls. Many corporate entities (HP, Intel, Google, Yahoo, Siemens, etc.) are said to be using them internally. Several successful prediction markets already exist, such as Hedgestreet, NewsFutures, the Iowa Electronic Markets, Hollywood Stock Exchange, and Inkling Markets. A spinoff of DARPA's Policy Analysis Market, prediction markets might be to markets what open source was to software.

i've got no problem with users who like to hand out favorites like they mean nothing, but, really...
as an aspiring user of metafilter, i'm not quite sure how to grant these special little clicks (especially in light of this). is there a proper ratio one might strive towards of posts i favorite versus posts of mine favorited by others? if not, is there some other measure which might guide me in my favoritism?

12 tone scale? bah!

12 tone scale? bah! Harry Partch: American composer, philosopher, publisher, teacher, satirist, instrument builder and designer, sculptor, theorist, experimentalist, adapted violist, conductor, author, retired hobo, seaman, sewer cleaner, vagrant, and graffitist. Until his death, Harry Partch had been doing his own thing for more than half a century. Partch's own thing began with his rejection of the European masters and the traditional bourgeois concert-hall performance.
partch created over 30 intruments to produce the sounds caught by the human ear not reproduced in concert halls. his life story is cool. his thoughts (pdf) have influenced the path of contemporary experimental music. one of the best of the bands influenced by him.

My name is Henry

My name is Henry, and I am addicted to public radio. It's pledge drive time again here. If the 1-800 number for your local public radio station scrolls through your consciousness for weeks after the drive is over, or you have bad dreams about contribution gifts, you might want to see this site for a diagnosis. As for treatment, no support groups have yet been found.

should i throw the stupid plastic/metal box which is my computers' case into the garbage

consider: - manufacturing costs of very small and powerful memory storage and processing capabilities falling at a fast rate - the convergence of many technologies (cellular, mobile music, cameras, internet, etc...) into devices with capabilities for each -how when you go to a coffee shop and everyone in the whole room is on a laptop could one infer from these premises (however truthful you find them to be) that the age of home computing is coming to an end? could one infer that desktops will fade out of use by the general public, preserved only by lonely programmers and developers that create the digital media landscape we consume?
