Toronto meetup?
I can't say yes for sure until the time is closer, but I will keep it in mind.

Meetup nom
We actually already have a #mofirc (MoFi) meetup at my place arranged that weekend and I was going to ask if we could all meet you guys in Toronto that Saturday (15th, nighttime). So, yeah. Good timing!

Um, I don't think #mofirc has much of an affiliation at this point beyond the fact it started out of MoFi. We're sort of like a mongrel pirate ship... chat... thing. Maybe zombie... pirate... monkey... ninja. Yeah. Okay. Half of us are on MeFi anyway, that's the important part.
So, a few points I would've mentioned if I'd gotten to posting before tehloki did: DaShiv is coming to our meetup, hence, he's coming up to Toronto with us; there's six confirmed driving up so far... [more]

The 'firc meetup crew consensus is "we prefer Saturday night, but we can make Sunday night okay if that's what pans out". So... yeah. Also, not too late in the night please. 8:30, 9 PM?

Nirvana is a restaurant, or a pub? Or both? Are we having dinner there then, or is the reservation just to be sure they've got enough tables/space for us?

Dudes. There's a winter storm warning for our region on Saturday night. We may not be making it out to Toronto in that case. Although I'm wondering how long it lasts; we could possibly do the Sunday brunch instead. It'd be a pity to have DaShiv all the way out here and not get him up to Toronto. Stay tuned, I guess!
Also, EXPEDITION FORCE = awesome.

Hmmm. We're talking we could possibly come up tonight instead of tomorrow night. This storm tomorrow night is supposed to be pretty bad, I don't think people are going to want to come out for Saturday night... what do you all think of doing the meetup tonight instead?

Okay, well, consensus here is that we should go up tonight. So... where are we meeting you? I'm thinking we'd be getting there around... 9:30 PM-ish? Will enough people turn out with this last-minute change of plans?

"Sorry, guys" doesn't necessarily mean "sorry, men that might read this", it could just as easily mean "sorry, you guys (gender-indeterminate people who are reading this) who might be offended by explicit detail of bodily functions/fluids" (which is how I read it). Because, hey, you're discussing bodily functions/fluids with strangers in public! What's wrong with being polite about other people's sensibilities that may not be yours? The apologies... [more]

I didn't even reference "condescension" when I offered my take on the situation, but you know what, I kinda gave benefit of the doubt to the poster, actually. The condescension I'm really seeing here is all you, EB.

You're ignorant
If there were a university.metafilter.com area, there could be a page for each subject and the experts in each area could list off resources as well as archive seminars, chats, discussions there so other people could browse them.
It would also work for stuff that is more discussion-based than teaching-based: I'd love to see course panels on subjects like parenting, breastfeeding, sex, relationships - sort of an extension of AskMeFi, where you could get multiple... [more]

It would be neat if the meetups in the sidebar had a little star next to them (like *) if there were new posts in the meetup thread since last you checked - a little reminder to go back and check the thread for any new info.

Remembering Retrotagging
I don't like that the tags I've used on my posts/questions show on my profile page. I just don't. It bugs. I had all my AskMeFi questions tagged but untagged them when that "feature" turned up so nothing would show. If people are going to go back and tag them again (and I agree it helps a lot with searching AskMeFi, don't get me wrong, this is just my personal picky-pick), could we get a way to turn off or override that "Top 10 Tags Used" thing on our profiles?

I *don't* want to make things harder for other people to find, which is one reason I commented here with my opinion - I'm fine with tagging, and have tagged all my MeFi posts. I would be happy to tag my AskMeFi questions if the tags didn't show on my profile. Someone else picking the tags is even worse. AskMeFi is personal questions, not impersonal links to stuff, you know; what if you've asked *really* personal stuff and had "buttitching" or "viagra" or "poop" up... [more]

You may not care, but other people might. Especially if you have almost no info on your profile.
I don't suffer embarrassment - I was using it as an example - and it is a valid point. Enjoy my questions about zits, makeup, and taxes.

New user history pages are up
I like the "all my activity" page as an additional view, but I really did prefer being able to see *where* I'd commented (list of timestamps linked to each comment underneath the relevant AskMeFi questions or MeFi posts), it's much easier to find with that set-up than all my comments reprinted on a page together - what Malor is referring to. Is it possible to get that back? It was quite useful for checking back on questions/posts.

Hey, I dig the 5 pin. If I'm going to be crappy at bowling, at least I have the excuse that it's foreign bowling.
Not to mention I get more points in 5 pin. (Yes, because there's more to get, heh.)

I agree with languagehat - I really liked being able to use favorites to bookmark on-site, but since "favorites" are widely used simply to show visible appreciation for a post or comment, that dilutes its usefulness for bookmarking.
It would be great to have those two uses separated out - but if that's not feasible, perhaps add an extra step: when you "favorite" something, you go to a page where there's a checkmark box that asks "do you also... [more]

I think the commenters mean well, but the poster is not asking for men's perspectives on menstruation. Also, that last answer edges into offensive with specific details on what the commenter prefers/doesn't prefer, because again, she's not asking for his opinion on the matter.

jessamyn, CiaoMela's answer answers the question and then goes on to give information (not opinion on how the poster or the poster's bf should be feeling regarding her period) with a method of coping with the implicit question some commenters are hearing. padraigin's answer also answers the question and manages to slip in "....And my experience is that my period is always a bigger deal to me than it ever has been for a guy..." as a neutral statement. No, I'm saying a non-answer that can read as offensive for reasons already pointed out has no reason that I can see to stay - especially when other non-answers that were similar were removed, and when actual answers that do not read as offensive cover similar territory.

Melinika, I didn't delete paulsc's post because it was fairly respectful even though not 100% a great answer.
mathowie: I appreciate your explanation.
I want to make sure you realize from my POV (and looks like I'm not alone in this) there's nothing more "respectful" about that comment than the others that were removed; and the dispute is not that "it isn't a great answer", the dispute is that it... [more]

I use Livejournal's syndication feature to manage the RSS feeds I want to follow. I've been subscribed to the AskMeFi one for quite a while now; the question posts are fed to my LJ Friends page, which I check regularly.
It's always seemed to work fine for me but today, looking directly on the site here, I see I missed a bunch of yesterday's AskMeFi questions. I compared the posts against my Friends page and about 8 of them never made it through the feed (all in one time... [more]

Full-time stay-at-home spawn-raising. And I get pretty irritable that whenever some drop-down box online asks me what my occupation is, that it is never an option to be a "homemaker" or what have you, no, just "unemployed". I'm not unemployed. It's hard work to train the 19-month-old to bring me bonbons and cool drinks while I lounge poolside all day gestating our next sprog. After all, I need another one to operate the palm-leaf fan.

Hmmm, a movie model that has people willing to pay more is something like Arclight, which offers less commercials/previews, bigger and more comfortable seats, reserved seating, and the opportunity to eat full meals and drink beer and wine while watching the movie - and the cost is just a couple dollars more than a regular movie. You're proposing a LOT more per ticket to only get one thing - no talking - which I already get by going to the local arthouse theater. The audience is more respectful,... [more]

I totally would get that [more inside] pregnancy shirt, but the size chart says:
Women's Junior Apparel (Jr. Ringer T-Shirt, Jr. Baby Doll T-shirt, Jr. Spaghetti Tank, Jr. Raglan, Jr. Hoodie and Camisole): These items are designed to fit juniors. They fit snug and sizes run small.
At 7 1/2 months, that does not sound like it's going to fit, even in XL. =/

Oh, and congrats to onlyconnect and NortonDC! I haven't had anything like that happen out of a MeFi meetup, but that's because I already met my husband through arranging the first big Fark party back in 2001. So a similar thing, just not MeFi-related. Anyway, many happy years together for you two.

The idea (alluded to here) that multiple similar answers will be deleted really bothers me. The more people that say the same thing, the more I or anyone else would know that answer works. Why stifle that?
AskMeFi was my favorite part of the site. It is becoming less enjoyable every day, between the deletions and the "best answers". These do not feel community-enhancing, but often community-detracting. I want AskMeFi to be useful, of course! but I don't want it... [more]

I check AskMeFi before MeTa and last night I wrote an answer to a question that had already been marked with a "best answer". I didn't realize the highlighted background on the comment meant such - thought it was just a bug in the system. If I had known, I would not have answered. The way I feel, if the questioner already got his/her answer(s), why should I add my comment? Are they even going to read it? Are they done discussing it? Okay, and to flip it back, a bunch of people saying something similar could add more weight to one answer over another, couldn't it? The collective experience shown wouldn't be something I'd want curtailed - ten people telling me "this same thing worked for me" would make me more confident in trying it than just one person saying so, in certain situations. Not to mention some of the people saying the "same thing" are giving different variants that could be quite useful, that... [more]
