Tax me on the River
You really need to consult with a tax professional who has specific experience with this topic.

Guava Surprise
This was surprisingly hard to find. This was the most promising stuff I found. I didn't look at every individual page linked to from these.

Fun with a purpose?
This isn't a direct answer but I still think it might be helpful. How about doing something constructive WHILE doing mindless excercise at the gym? Easiest example would be listening to an iPod -- educational podcasts, language instructuction, serious books/magazines you wouldn't otherwise have time to read, etc...

FLA in NYC?
Slightly different angle on what most others are saying -- Florida has no state income tax, so it's a good place to claim one's primary residence. I think registering the car there is more about supporting the primary residence claim than it is about cheaper insurance / cheaper car-related taxes.

Prenup Angst
Maybe it would be possible for each of you to trust your own lawyer a little bit more and empower him/him to decide more for you -- let the lawyers do the fighting and agree to accept what they come up with?

What's it like around Downtown Crossing (Boston)?
Wow. This is kind of depressing. But I guess I'm glad I asked. The place is really fantastic, huge, and in our price range. I guess maybe this is why.

"SOWA" is South of Washington Street. Referenced here (and various other hits here).

Thanks for all the replies so far. Very helpful. The place we're looking at is on the 11th/top floor, which I think/hope would mitigate the noise issue. There are a ton of windows but they are thick/double-paned. We've noticed very little noise while visiting (but it's been after 5 so not during construction hours).
We do have a car now, and we'd garage it nearby (probably at the Ritz) for the first couple of months at least, but anticipate getting rid of it.... [more]

Airline scam or not?
Why would a major airline help desk consultant ask for my phone number? ... Then the person asked me for my phone number so that his airline could contact me if there was any other delay information regarding this flight.
My guess is that he asked for your phone number so he could contact you if there was any other delay information regarding your filght.

Is my Canon a lemon?
We just bought a Canon PowerShot A590IS and were really surprised and disappointed with how quickly the "low battery" comes on.
However, it seems to keep working for quite a long time after it starts complaining. Keep using it it actually stops working -- you may find that it's not eating batteries as quickly as you think.

Awkward parental relations: how to prevent?
I think that it might help to enlarge the party a little bit -- invite a few more people so you can be absolutely sure that each parent will have plenty of other people to interact with.

I Can't Breathe, Damnit!
I've gotta recommend Nasalcrom -- I'm using it for the first time this spring and it's working incredibly well. It's not an antihistamine nor a decongestant. It's different from other nasal sprays and relatively new. You might be willing to try it despite your warning -- it's working so well for me after so many miserable springs that I can't resist recommending it.

Aerogarden gone wild... what now?
My mother had an excellent experience with their phone customer service (1-800-476-9669). They walked her through various testing / reset steps, and mailed a replacement part to her (no charge) when that turned out to be necessary.

When do we abandon the stock market (for investing)?
If you were capable of successully predicting the short-term direction of the stock market, you'd be a professional investment manager. But you're not, and you're not. Your IRA is a retirement account. You should only be thinking about the long term. Leave your money in stocks.

Is it more fiscally wise to rent or to buy a home?
a family member has offered us a sum of money roughly equivalent to our down if we buy in the next two years
Renting vs. buying can be a very complicated decision, and tweaking your assumptions just a little bit can change things dramatically... but this factor here is a huge argument in favor of buying. It's hard to imagine that buying would not be fiscally wise for you, given that you're planning to stay in the area for a long time, and that... [more]

Take this broken grammar and learn to fly
My favorite example of this is from Bob Dylan's "If You See Her, Say Hello":
"If you see her, say hello, she might be in Tangier
She left here last early spring, is livin' there, I hear
Say for me that I'm all right though things get kind of slow
She might think that I've forgotten her, don't tell her it isn't so."
Don't tell her that he has not forgotten her?
Or don't tell her that he has forgotten her, because he hasn't?

Do I have to give dibs to a higher priced Cubs parking space seller?
My read that it dosen't really matter what's right, or how this market should work. It's just not worth pissing off people who know where you live, and where you park.
If your read is that they're just a little grumpy about it, that's one thing. Go for the undercut. But if they're truly angry (like potentially vengeful), it's so not worth it for you.
