Iceland meetup: 15-19th October
Argh... I may be in Iceland next year though, since Iceland Air has that thing where you can get a flight connecting through Reykjavik, and then just hang out in Iceland as long as you want to, and continue on your way with the same ticket.

Simultaneously gratifying and embarrassing; thank you for this veritable cornucopia of emotions.
A couple of my favorites: aeschenkarnos' Outside. The loquacious McCube. The "Banned 4 Lyfe" gif (by #1). "I think you better do something about that rancid pit of elephant seal blubber". And hermitosis explains the Book of Job.... [more]

John Wilmot, earl of Rochester
I once saw a movie about this motherfucker, featuring JOHN MALKOVICH as KING CHARLES II. Ponder that. The oddest part was, he looked just like the guy. It's funny what a tiny mustache and a gigantic periwig will do.

Synecdochically
This is correct, but good god. Don't paint yourself into the adverbial corner with a word like synecdoche; do whatever you have to do so you don't have to say something so barbaric.
Synecdochically? I want to punch myself in the face just for trying to pronounce it.

I am not in favor of yet another neglected subsite that nobody ever looks at. "Music" is of a rather broader appeal (I think most would agree) and yet, it's kind of a running joke that no one goes there. Travel likewise. Jobs. Sorry, but I think this is feature/mission creep. It might be a neat idea for your own website though. Gardenfilter.com, .org, and .net are all available.

Post editing ability
Yes, every edit must be preserved wiki-style, if this actually happens. I personally think it's a terrible idea, but if it must be done, save every version. I would prefer if all edits were visible to the userbase, but then again... I'm a user.

I always thought the podcast would eventually evolve into something like this.

Mefi Made Me See The Light!
The war.
To be more specific, I started lurking on metafilter in late 2001, while still in high school. My political opinions were generally a self-contradictory amalgam of neo-con rah-rah kill and Green Party atheist evangelistic liberalism. I was all about the wars, somehow (even Iraq, stupidly)... I think my justification for supporting them was the Marshall Plan, and that striking enemies before they struck you seemed like a good idea. It was not an informed opinion.... [more]

It doesn't affect how I see myself either way, and it doesn't affect how I see the world.

That is actually a large part of why I am here. It's too easy to be insular and forget that how we see ourselves and how we are actually seen are all too often two different things.

Persecution complex, much?
I was going to send him a mefimail, advising him to tone it down, but it was too late by then. I knew it would only be a matter of time until there was a MeTa about the dude. I kind of feel bad for him; it seems like he should probably stay out of political threads (like I usually do). It's too easy to get sucked into the negativism, and he was new.
At least it was just a timeout & not a full-on ban. Maybe he will clean it up next time around.

Nice pics!
Cool, I look like a doofus compared to everyone else. Just like in real life.
But more seriously, since the image size is so small I can't figure out how to get a decent picture in there without making it look like a floating, disembodied head. Not that I want a larger picture of me anywhere, ever. Oh well, at least that's the worst thing I am worrying about right now.

Comments as votes?
No, I think the Favorites feature generally reflects the community interest (at least in the case of Posts, rather than comments). In this case, they are both rather low, but: eustacescrubb's has 6 favorites, and the Ann Coulter post only has 1. This makes perfect sense to me, since, tomorrow I won't want to read the delirious comments in the Ann Coulter post (which are really the only attraction), but in 6 months I might want to check out that website eustacescrubb posted again.

The tricky thing with DMCA takedown requests is, if a large corporation sends one to you, do you really have the time & money to invest in fighting it? Most people don't. They are economically compelled to comply with the request, even if it's not valid.

It sucks.
It is bad in basically every way that a story can be bad. Its style is lifted from Raymond Carver, but has been bludgeoned with the immature emotional "importance" of a 10th-grader. The actual... [more]
