RIP, DFW
It sort of pisses me off that someone with such a gift . . .
I guess that's inappropriate, but it's all I got. I thought I "knew" him through his writing and did not expect this, contrary to the "saw it coming" comments above. His essay about 9/11, for example, had him appreciating his church-going elderly neighbors in a way that did not strike me as tortured-writer-guy.
Oh well.

Its our ten year anniversary, my future girlfriend...
Hat Baby is on there. I don't get the relative sizes -- some items seem too small or too large in relation to their meme-iness. "I Kiss You," for example, should be huge, at least as I recall it.

Anthrax suspect kills himself ahead of arrest
Msalt -- the line in the NYT story about "hundreds of similar letters" seems to have disappeared (unless I'm somehow missing it now.) I saw the same line when I first read the article and thought that it couldn't possibly be correct because, if the FBI had "hundreds" of letters in Ivins' house that were "similar" to the actual anthrax letters (e.g., handwriting, language, etc.), then they would have published them.... Bringing Down Bear Stearns
The article is pretty good (although the WSJ ran essentially the same thing a few weeks ago), but the headline oversells the story. There is basically no evidence presented of any "shadowy group of short-sellers" who "murdered" Bear.
Also, of course people formerly associated with Bear blame everything on shadowy figures (international banking, the freemasons, the Bilderburgers, hedge funds etc.) rather than their own gigantic... [more]

But you said it yourself -- every public company is always swimming in a sea of rumors and short-selling pressure; I think Bear just became more vulnerable to the effects of that constant contagion by its mistakes with the big hedge funds, Jimmy's horrible press, etc. It's like getting a hole punched in your spacesuit -- all the bad stuff out there suddenly rushed in.

Made me think of Infinite Jest, which, as I recall, involved a film of a beautiful woman somehow rotating or perhaps walking around in a revolving door. That, and tennis.

ATDT
How many of these people do you really think were hardcore hackers? I say that having met about half of them at various 2600 meetings and such in the 1990s. A lot of scenesters with red boxes and such, but not a lot of Wargames-type stuff going on -- at least that was my impression. (I was an admitted hanger-on.) But, then agin, I never met the L0pht people -- they always seemed more serious and dangerous from what I read.

How to tell if a suit is good
Some people say that you wreck the shape of the suit by opening the pockets and putting things (or your hands) in them, stretching them out. I've never really experienced that myself, but people say it.

Help me get my truck fixed up
Thanks for the helpful responses so far. To answer a couple of questions:
1. It's a stick.
2. By "running rough" I mean that the engine is noisier and choppier at idle than it used to be -- it sort of putters more.
3. I mentioned the water pump because I had a water pump fail in this car once.
Thanks again.

It also seems to have less power than it did before -- i.e., I find myself upshifting at lower speeds than before because the engine seems to be working harder to do less.

We need to talk about this...
I cannot believe we're on our third thread about this whole incident. Maybe it's time for a separate blog about all this stuff? Because I have no idea why MetaFilter is becoming the internet's one-stop-shop for all things Givewell.
Seriously, "we need to talk about this"? Not really.
And I like all of the people still fired up about all this, but, guys, give it a rest already.

Matt: I've banned and given timeouts to users that go to other sites and start turf wars with other sites and this one. I don't remember the last person that did it specifically, but I do recall I saw a lame turf-war type of thing start and told everyone in a metatalk thread to lay off links to that site and don't go over there and post troll comments trying to incite them against us, and someone went ahead and did that and got banned from here.

Bike boxes in Portland Intersections
I commute to work in Chicago and I'm pretty sure the bikers here already use a sort of "bike box" by pulling up to the intersection, crossing the pedestrian crosswalk, and then parking there while waiting for the light. The cars are stuck several feet behind you but you're still far enough out of the way of crossing traffic that you don't block the road. Also, cars can make right turns behind you. Also, because you're out into the intersection, you're more visible.

Wombs for Rent
I'm always amazed at the number of people who know nothing about adoption who somehow feel qualified to recommend it to other people. Here are some reasons that people might want to use fertility treatments (which can range from a simple and cheap Chlomid pill to full-blown IVF) rather than adopt:
1. Most domestic adoptions in the US are "open" adoptions -- the biological parents know who the adoptive parents are, can contact them, and, when the kid is a... [more]

Kittens - not sure what you mean by "must have baby now.". Both adotpion and IVF are long, expensive, painful (in different ways), and not guaranteed to result in a baby. It's pretty much the opposite of must have baby now.
As far as the terms "obtaining a baby" and "something they want" - I was trying to talk about adotption versus IVF in the most practical terms possible (to rebut the notion that there is no practical reason to choose IVF... [more]

My mother-in-law secretly baptized my Jewish children
Can you talk to a rabbi about this? I would recommend it. Here's why:
(1) While I can understand why you are upset (I am Jewish), I am certain that the MIL intended no harm and, in fact, may have believed that bad things would happen to the children if she did not take action. I think a rabbi, who has probably run into this sort of thing before, might be able to offer some perspective that would explain the MIL's actions and might elp you figure out what to do next.... Tough lovin' is hard on a cell phone
Check out the Motorola F3, also known as the Motofone. I bought one on ebay for about $40. Just pop the SIM out of the current phone and into the F3 and you're all set. The thing is made for the developing world -- mainly India -- so it's sealed against dust and is very tough. It has pretty much no features, but battery life if great. I like it.

OH the pain!
I think there are local anesthetics for tooth aches that you can buy over the counter. If that does not work, there's always the old-fashioned remedy of a cotton ball soaked in high-proof booze applied to the tooth (never tried this myself, but read about it in a book).

Actually, I just googled it, and I guess you put the cotton ball against your gums near the tooth, not on the tooth itself.

Brie to bake
Yes, the thing with the puff pastry is awesome and easy.
My wife says wrap the brie in the puff pastry, then bake at about 350 for about 15-20 minutes, watching it closely after 15.
