Ask post: Intermediate Swimming Advice?
I had very similar issues (didn't want to take a beginner class, not good enough for advanced work) and I took private lessons at UT. There are almost certainly other places you can get private lessons, but I went with UT because it was easy and I was reasonably certain of the quality of the instruction.
The new swimming complex there is lovely, and if you aren't a UT affiliate you can get a community membership. Now is actually a really good time to do it, as you can get a... [more]

Ask post: What's Wrong With Netflix?
Sounds like you may be subject to throttling. You can google it to find boards where people discuss various tactics to get around it, but basically if you're not profitable (getting too many discs in a month) they'll find ways to slow you down. I'd get stuff from way down my queue, longer and longer delays, etc., but I didn't know it was a deliberate play on their part until I ran across an article about it recently.

Ask post: American Girl in Sicily
Ooh, you should go see the temple at Segesta in the morning and then go to the Baglio Pocoroba for lunch. It's a fixed price, several course meal of some of the best food you'll ever eat. Giuseppe, the owner, went out into the fields between courses to pick fresh peaches for our dessert when we were there. The lamb was out of this world. We went two years ago when they had just opened and we still talk about the meal and the location regularly. Giuseppe and his father are delightful, and... [more]

It appears in the first one the devil is thanking Lord whatever for his services in spreading vice ("encouraging all manner of wickedness, by gaming..." and promising that he will be a privy counsellor forever. It involves some business in Germany.
No clue what the source is or why the page numbers, but that's what I can make out so far.

"In Germany w(hen)" -- a really weird looking hen -- and baro(net).

Although I can't believe I missed "ass". I kept trying to figure out what kind of animal he meant that to me.

A yew is a tree -- to be honest, I have no clue what they look like, I just figured it based on context.

Ask post: Cat just starting Lasix - how long before I should see effects?
Lasix works faaaaaaaaast. I can't really say about the -pril drug I'm on, because I was put on a bunch of meds at the same time, but the diuretic there's no question about. If I don't take it for several days (or weeks, lately) and then I take a dose, I'm running to the bathroom within a few hours. When I was first put on Lasix, I was given a bolus dose at the hospital. That night I didn't sleep more than 5 minutes at a time because I was going to the bathroom so much; prior to that, I had... [more]

Ask post: Opportunities for a technical lawyer?
I can't speak to the trial law end of things at all, but as Clyde Mnestra suggests, patent law would be the obvious choice with your background. Since you're in Texas, you might want to consider UT. The IP law program is very well-respected, as is the IP journal. Lots of folks on the journal are older than the average law student, having had careers in technology before coming to law school. Most of them end up with multiple offers from biglaw firms. Some get jobs as in-house counsel with... [more]

I'm about your age and size, and I've been on 10 mg lisinopril for a bit over 3 years, along with a whole bunch of other meds. I've had plenty of side effects from my meds, but none of them seem to be caused by lisinopril except perhaps some of the fatigue. I get regular blood tests to monitor kidney function, but that's about it. As mathlete says, to me it's one of my safe medications. There's always the possibility of side effects, but I wouldn't freak out about it just yet.

Do you do this with other big things in life? I've always resisted transitions, even when I have wanted them and planned for them for a long time. When I went to study abroad (out of country for the first time), I was ready to turn around and walk away rather than get on the plane -- even though I'd been looking forward to going for 2 years, and I loved it when I was there. Even with smaller things, as the time draws near to actually do something, I tend to resist, consciously or... [more]

Ask post: Good Historic books
Eleanor Estes's Moffat books were written and are set during WWII. I always found them fascinating, as a day-to-day look at life during the war (victory gardens, knitting washcloths for soldiers, etc).
She also wrote the Pye books, which were written later (1950s) but set earlier (1920s).
The Great Brain books would also fit into the Betsy-Tacy category, and are a great look at life in Utah at the turn of the century.... [more]

Ask post: How to contact my estranged father for documents required for Irish Citizenshp?
No, it really depends on which state he was born in. In New York, for example, only the person named on the certificate or their parents can get a birth certificate without a court order. In many, if not most, places, you have to have some kind of relationship to the person named on the certificate.
It would be helpful if we knew which state he was born in and which state he lives in now, as that materially affects the availability of these records to you if you don't want to ask... [more]

Ask post: How can we NOT move to Vista without hoarding XP licenses?
According to Toshiba, if you've got some (any kind, I think) installation medium for XP, you can use that; when you get to the product key stage, you call Microsoft and they'll give you a valid XP key to replace the Vista key. I don't know if all computer manufacturers are doing this, but that's the deal Toshiba worked out. (Note that they still aren't providing the drivers needed to run their products under XP, but that's another story).

Some contrary advice. I took a grad level foreign language exam at a university in the frozen north. My proficiency in the target language was reasonably good (I'd say intermediate) but the important thing was knowing how the language exam was structured. It turned out that at my school, they gave you a passage of something -- a historical or philosophical tract, for example -- and asked you to translate that. I looked at some sample exams and they were all impenetrable to me. What I did... [more]

Heh, JMOZ, I didn't think of it as particularly southern, but I grew up hearing "slicker than shit" in similar circumstances. Owl snot is simultaneously less uncouth and more colorful.
In the category of phrases that are talked about more than they're used (in my world, at least): "he couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel".

Yeah, as Metroid Baby and middleclasstool said, pop is not typically southern. It makes my ears bleed -- and I'm not a Coke diehard. I'm fine with soda or soft drink, but pop? No way. Among other things, some southern parents (though not mine) refer to corporal punishment of any variety less than a whipping as "a pop" -- so hearing a parent ask a child, "You want a pop?" sounds like the child is acting up in the grocery store and is being threatened with a smack on the... Close to the HRC side of campus are a couple of B&Bs -- Austin Folk House and Star of Texas Inn, if they are within your budget. I know several law students older than you who have firm job offers from prestigious, high-paying firms. I definitely wouldn't let age stop you. You might want to be aware, though, that there are some firms whose culture is not welcoming to older hires -- they want young, enthusiastic people who will be willing to devote themselves completely to the firm. It was able to maintain alphabetization. For reference, my hoop comes up almost to my chin and is fairly heavy, but has no filler of any kind. Seams shouldn't pucker. In a really nice suit, the lapel will roll, not be pressed into a sharp crease. Check the finishing of the small details -- buttonholes, as YoungAmerican mentions, as well as vents, hems, etc. You shouldn't see rough edges or fraying threads.

Same for a mailing address -- a PO Box or some other way to receive your mail without having to give out your home address.
