MeTa post: DC meetup over Memorial Day? Any takers?
I will definitely try to make this one. Hopefully I won't have to work ridiculously late again.

Argh. Just realized I'll be at wolf trap that night. There is a cosmic conspiracy keeping me away from meetups.

MeTa post: It's just like a meet-up except better because it's not in Berkeley.
Ooh, I hope I can actually go to this one... somehow I'm always out of town.

I was guessing 4Ps too, grateful.

3/28 works for me (my last weekend as a twenty-something), but I'll do my best to be at whatever place and time is decided.

There are so many good bars in DC, pity to waste a night at a crappy one.

Agreed. Seems like opinion on Nanny's is mixed, but I haven't been, so I can't say either way (I don't make it up to Cleveland Park much anymore).

Gah. I was so excited to go to my first meetup, and now it looks like I'm going to be stuck at work forEVAR. Crap. How late do people usually tend to stick around?

Eh, if I'm working so late that I can't get to Cleveland Park til 10, then I'll be too wiped out to frolic anyway. I'll be there if I can. Otherwise, I will silently curse you all while trapped at my desk, eating soup from a can and drinking orange soda.

MeTa post: Let's sing!
Aw man, I would so be there if I weren't, you know, very far away. Wah.

MeTa post: Metafilter Runs - Challenge
I had a really great run Monday (only 3+ miles, but I finally felt kinda powerful doing it, vice schlubby), which inspired me to check out this thread and treat myself to a refurb Nano and Nike+ as an early 30th birthday self-prezzie. So I think I will be joining.

Between this and krav maga, there is a faint (but nevertheless real) possibility that I might become one of those people for whom vigorous physical activity is naturally -- and willingly -- a... [more]

MeTa post: New Favorites page!
I, too, was going to coin a new term to describe how awesome this is, until said awesomeness scrambled my brain.

Also, what bru said.

MeTa post: The Numinati
Another vote for anything you're willing to give us on this. I'm behind the most onerous of firewalls at work (I'm lucky I can even get to AskMeFi at all -- I can't get to numinous's mockup), and we MUST use IE6, of all things. Foxes and Monkeys are now, and will forever be, completely out of the question. So in any given thread, I get to CTRL-F my way through every. freaking. mention. of the OP's name to find any followups they might have posted with additional... [more]

MeTa post: I'm a bit obsessive about my album art, but I...
@geoff.: If you're looking for a dedicated album-art-fetching program, I'd recommend Album Art Aggregator. It finds art for about 85% of my collection (the other 15% being pretty rare/weird stuff), and it's a small, well-behaved program.

And thanks, Rock Steady, for the art!

MeTa post: hama7's getting grief for nothing....
Double standards, confusion, and inconsistency are a part of metafilter. You don't have to hang around here for very long to see that veterans can often get away with things that n00bs can't. When users notice a pattern of inconsistent treatment, and come to MeTa to request (1, 2) more rules, clearer guidelines, more consistent enforcement, etc., (many of) the vets say "we like it they way it is. deal with it or get the fuck out."

And you know what?... [more]

MeTa post: I'm guessing the chances are pretty slim, but I...
The second point is that I've long held that inconsistent enforcment is often the best way, assuming rational and roughly-benevolent enforcers, to manage a community as it scales upward. Community norms will emerge based on the risk perception of the community members, and by shifting the enforcment slightly, you can correct things much more easily with a smaller amount of effort.

I was originally going to say that, as a conscientious n00b, the... [more]

MeTa post: I'd love to help you name your cat, and I'd love...
I realize I'm late to the show, but I have an honest question... what's the difference between mixtape questions (help me find more songs that meet certain criteria) and book recommendation questions like this one (help me find more books that meet certain criteria). For my part, I enjoy both kinds of threads and think that they should be considered valid queries for the great HiveMind, but clearly others disagree. Why is that? Or are book threads... [more]

I appreciate the responses (especially since this thread is sputtering and dying), and I agree that ideally, mixtapes should be a personal endeavor. But that doesn't seem to be the rationale for the anti-mixtape guidelines here. Perhaps our fearless leaders could weigh in if they're still reading. I still don't see the difference between "My friend is moving to Timbuktu and I want to give her a CD -- what are some good songs about Timbuktu?" (which is apparently frowned upon), and... [more]
